A Look back to 1973
Secretariat set a record at the Belmont Stakes in 1973. That has never been broken. We’ll be reviewing Secretariat’s incredible run at the Belmont Stakes in 1973, which led to him becoming the ninth Triple Crown winner. These days a lot of recency bias occurs and people argue that the athletes of years ago can’t compete with today’s athletes. In Horse Racing nobody says that because the greatest horse of all time was Secretariat and the numbers he put up in the 1973 Triple Crown season show that he would win today also.

Yes, I do know that the 1973 Belmont Stakes featured a horse and not a person. Secretariat’s feat almost 50 years ago is legendary and should be honored as a sporting moment.
Horse Racing Season 1973 by Secretariat
Secretariat made a remarkable comeback in 1973’s Kentucky Derby.
Although the horse started last, he quickly rose to first place and defeated Sham by two and a quarter lengths.
Secretariat finished the Kentucky Derby in 1:59.40 overall and 23 seconds in last quarter mile.
At the 1973 Preakness it was déjà vu all over again. Secretariat started last and finished ahead of all the horses except Sham who finished second, two and half lengths behind.

Secretariat, who was heading into the Belmont to win the Triple Crown, wanted to make history. This is the first Triple Crown winner since 1948 when Citation won all three major horse-racing events.
This race was not like the others in the Triple Crown.
Secretariat started off much better and defeated Twice a Prince by a remarkable 31 lengths.
Secretariat’s 2:24.00 time was the fastest ever recorded in Belmont Stakes history.
