As May begins, so does “The Run for the Roses”. So take out your mint julep cup and bet on this year’s Kentucky Derby race – either by watching live streaming online, placing bets through sportsbooks, or placing some at an official bookmaker’s site!
In 2023, The Kentucky Derby will again feature 20 horses – barring any last-minute scratches or withdrawals – making the race difficult to predict even for experienced bettors. Yet, there will always be one or two colts that stand out amongst their peers.
Attracting top horses for this year’s 1 1/4-mile-long Derby is no small feat, and these stellar horses possessing top speeds are abundant among them; however, few stand out as true pace-setters compared with others in their class. Trainers tend to reward horses with stamina and closing burst throughout the race’s length, which could set up another thrilling finish!
Forte (+300) opened as the favorite for this year’s Kentucky Derby, joining Tapit Trice (+500) and Angel of Empire (+800). All three horses possess less than 10-1 odds to claim this prized jewel of the Triple Crown.
Tapit Trice stands out in terms of his odds due to running from the No. 5 gate, which has produced 10 Kentucky Derby winners – more than any other gate ever in its history!
Reincarnate, Sun Thunder, Raise Cain and Continuar all opened tied with 50-1 odds to take home this year’s, Kentucky Derby.
Note: Due to an elevated temperature, Practical Move was scratched from starting and replaced by Cyclone Mischief; Lord Miles also failed to start due to Saffie Joseph Jr. being suspended by Churchill Downs following two deaths under his supervision; instead, Mandarin Hero will take its place on the field as the No. 22 horse.
Verifying (+1500), in the No. 2 gate, could provide real value when picking Kentucky Derby horses this year. With two wins and two second-place finishes from six starts, Verifying could become an unlikely champion in 2023.
Verifying is sired by Justify, who won the Triple Crown last year and inherits his pedigree for speed. Although not quite a pacesetter, he tends to break quickly out of the gates and may grab hold of the rail, giving himself an early edge at getting into contention for victory and jockey Tyler Gaffalione an opportunity for an explosive stretch run finish.
Verifying may not possess the elite speed of some of his rivals. However, his superior stamina and closing burst should help make him one of the fastest horses down the stretch and potentially one of three top finishers in this race. That makes Verifying an excellent sleeper candidate and a possible top-three finisher in this event.
Tapit Trice is bidding to be the first grey horse since Giacomo won in 2005, and he stands an excellent chance. He is trained by Todd Pletcher – whose horses have competed at six prior Pre Kentucky Derby events this year alone! – Tapit Trice has already shown great promise by winning four out of his five career starts.
Tapit Trice is an impressive come-from-behind horse who often starts slowly before charging to finish strongly with his speed and power. Though you shouldn’t expect him to lead early, his stamina and power make him a critical contender provided that he doesn’t start too slowly and get caught in traffic. I like Tapit Trice to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby.
