Edmonton Oilers games have become more open in recent games, but I expect the Florida Panthers’ home advantage in Game 7 to tighten things back up, and I expect there will be fewer goals before the third period than there were in Game 6. Game 6 had a potential under 5.5 goal total until two empty-net goals by Edmonton gave a 5-1 result; that could potentially occur again, but my expectation os that it’s not likely.
Game 7s of any series bring an exhilarating rush. We have seen three Game 7s so far this postseason, with 11 goals scored between them: Boston defeated Toronto in overtime 2-1, Dallas edged Vegas 2-1, and Edmonton upset Vancouver 3-2. In Game 7, both sides are forced to limit risks by making safe plays with the puck, tightening things up as risks become less likely.
Sixteen out of seventeen Stanley Cup Final Game 7s since 1950 have produced five or fewer goals; an exception being when Detroit Red Wings beat New York Rangers 4-3 in double overtime.
Over the past 15 years: Blues defeated Bruins 4-1 in 2019, Bruins defeated Canucks 4-0 in 2011, and Penguins edged Red Wings 2-1. Even Edmonton made it into Game 7 but lost to Carolina Hurricanes and under six goals were scored.
History alone won’t tell the full tale; therefore we should also examine recent stats to back our prediction up. For instance, in Game 5 and 6 the Panthers enjoyed expected goal advantages of 2.68 to 0.76 at 5-on-5 play with an expected goals difference between them of between 1.39 to 0.96; therefore we anticipate seeing similar performance in Game 7. An Under 4.5 or even Under 3.5 bet would likely do best as an option in this one-game betting series.
