The Columbus Blue Jackets begin an important road stretch Tuesday night when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena for a Metropolitan Division matchup between two teams trying to gain early-season momentum.
Columbus enters at 4-5-0 after earning one of its most encouraging victories of the season Saturday night, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 in overtime at Nationwide Arena. Adam Fantilli scored the game-winning power-play goal just 59 seconds into overtime, while Cam Talbot stopped 26 of 27 shots.
The win was especially important because Columbus entered the night having lost four of its previous five games. It also ended an extended Blue Jackets power-play drought, with Fantilli’s winner representing their first goal with the man advantage in 23 opportunities.
Philadelphia enters 3-7-3 after having its three-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 5-4 loss to Anaheim.
The Flyers led 2-0 and later 3-2 but were unable to protect either advantage. Matvei Michkov scored twice, Porter Martone had a goal and an assist, and Tyson Foerster scored shorthanded. Philadelphia finished with 32 shots but allowed Anaheim to score five times on only 26 attempts.
Michkov has become the player Columbus must contain.
The young Philadelphia star has eight goals and enters Tuesday riding a five-game point streak. He has produced six goals and eight points during that stretch, including his two-goal performance against Anaheim.
Columbus counters with a young offensive group led by Fantilli, Kent Johnson and Zach Werenski.
Johnson enters with four goals and three assists, while Fantilli now has three goals after Saturday’s overtime winner. Valeri Nichushkin, Matthew Knies, Charlie Coyle and Sean Monahan give Columbus additional scoring options throughout the lineup.
The biggest concern for the Blue Jackets remains consistency.
Columbus showed Saturday it can defend against an elite opponent, holding Vegas to one goal. But the Jackets had surrendered six against Toronto in their previous game and seven against Florida earlier in October.
Philadelphia has similar volatility.
The Flyers were winless through their first nine games before winning three straight, only to surrender five goals against Anaheim. That makes Tuesday’s matchup difficult to predict, but Columbus’ recent defensive response against Vegas provides reason for optimism.
Official player markets may not be fully posted yet. The thresholds below are recommended target lines. Confirm final odds, starting goaltenders and player availability before wagering.
Fantilli should enter Philadelphia with confidence after scoring the overtime winner against Vegas.
His role continues to expand at even strength and on the power play, and Columbus needs him attacking rather than becoming overly passive with the puck.
Philadelphia allowed 26 shots against Anaheim and five goals.
Recommended target: Fantilli over 2.5 shots on goal.
Few players in this matchup enter hotter than Michkov.
He scored twice Saturday and now has six goals during his current five-game point streak.
Columbus defended extremely well against Vegas, but Michkov’s combination of creativity, finishing and power-play involvement makes him Philadelphia’s most dangerous scoring option.
Werenski remains the engine of Columbus’ offense from the blue line.
He logs major minutes, joins the rush and should see significant power-play responsibility against a Philadelphia penalty kill that allowed Anaheim to score once in four opportunities Saturday.
If Columbus generates sustained offensive-zone pressure, Werenski should have multiple shooting opportunities.
Philadelphia’s 5-4 game Saturday makes the over tempting, but Columbus may prefer a much different style.
The Blue Jackets just held Vegas to one goal and looked considerably more disciplined defensively.
If Columbus controls possession and avoids turning the game into an end-to-end track meet, a 3-2 or 3-1 type result is realistic.
Recommended play if the total opens at 6.5: Under.
Adam Fantilli — Columbus: Coming off the overtime winner against Vegas and becoming increasingly important to the Blue Jackets’ offense.
Kent Johnson — Columbus: Leads Columbus’ early offensive production with four goals and three assists.
Zach Werenski — Columbus: Drives offense from the blue line and remains essential at even strength and on special teams.
Matvei Michkov — Philadelphia: Eight goals already and six during his current five-game point streak.
Trevor Zegras — Philadelphia: Recorded two assists against Anaheim and provides creativity alongside Philadelphia’s young scorers.
Porter Martone — Philadelphia: Scored his third goal Saturday and added an assist on Michkov’s second goal.
Columbus remains without Ivan Provorov, who is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury. Dante Fabbro has also been unavailable with a broken hand, while Isac Lundestrom remains sidelined.
Philadelphia has been dealing with injuries to Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett and Cam York. Their availability should be checked closer to puck drop.
Columbus Blue Jackets 3, Philadelphia Flyers 2
Columbus Moneyline — if near even money or better Under 6.5 Goals — Target Total Adam Fantilli Over 2.5 Shots — Target Line Zach Werenski Over 2.5 Shots — Target Line
Philadelphia is dangerous because Michkov is playing his best hockey of the young season, but the Flyers have struggled defensively and have already blown several leads.
Columbus’ victory over Vegas may provide the confidence this team needed.
Talbot’s strong goaltending, Fantilli’s overtime winner and the end of the power-play drought were all encouraging developments.
Philadelphia will generate chances, particularly through Michkov and Zegras, but Columbus has also dominated the recent head-to-head series, entering Tuesday having won five consecutive meetings with the Flyers.
Expect a close Metropolitan Division battle with Philadelphia pushing late before the Blue Jackets protect a one-goal advantage.
Prediction: Columbus Blue Jackets 3, Philadelphia Flyers 2.
The game is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 PM ET at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Official forward betting markets were not broadly available when this preview was prepared, so confirm the final moneyline, total, starting goaltenders and player props before wagering.
