When these teams met for Week 4, Pittsburgh gave Birmingham quite the scare, taking a 20-18 lead midway through the fourth quarter after QB Troy Williams ran for 34 yards for a touchdown – only for Birmingham WR Deon Cain to record an amazing 91-yard kickoff return touchdown and hand them their 24-20 victory.
Even in defeat, Pittsburgh made life tough for McGough, as he completed just 58.6% of his passes for 157 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions; they also limited him to 48 yards rushing touchdown. Meanwhile, Williams completed 63.6 percent of his throws for 217 yards plus another 63-yard run that led directly to another score; if this performance can repeat itself Saturday he can provide his team with an excellent chance at victory.
Birmingham enters this game riding a six-game winning streak after defeating the Breakers. While they may not score 40 or more points against an aggressive defense (ranked second for points per game allowed during regular season vs 17.2) and turnover margin (+8) leader like that of Birmingham Maulers’ defense, McGough must remain especially vigilant against an aggressive front seven and solid secondary.
On Saturday night, for Birmingham to come away victorious against Pittsburgh Maulers, it will depend heavily on their running game to provide enough yardage and touchdowns. Last weekend they managed 245 total yards, with Ricky Person Jr. leading with 84 on ten carries from IFL; taking pressure off McGough will make a substantial difference.
Williams cannot do it alone, as this offense will rely on all players playing their part. Pittsburgh went 0-for-3 in red zone attempts during Week 4, which mustn’t happen against a Stallions squad that has averaged 31.6 points in their past six games. Williams will need wideouts Isiah Hennie and Ishmael Hyman as primary targets to help get this done successfully.
Hennie led the Maulers with six receptions (10 targets) for 83 yards during last week’s win, while Hyman received Williams’ only touchdown pass to score. Pittsburgh should not settle for taking field goals this weekend because their opponents can score quickly.
The Maulers defense is good enough to keep them in this game and make the -6.5 hard to cover, but I think the Stallions will prevail 27-17.
