UFL Week 9: Birmingham Stallions 29 at Columbus Aviators 36

COLUMBUS, OH — In one of the wildest, most unpredictable finishes of the UFL season, the Columbus Aviators defended their home turf with a thrilling 36–29 upset victory over the Birmingham Stallions on Saturday afternoon at Historic Crew Stadium. Fueled by late-game defensive heroics and a gritty performance from their new starting quarterback, the Aviators survived a rocky start to shock the Stallions in front of an electric hometown crowd.

A Back-and-Forth Battle From the Start

Neither team waited long to light up the scoreboard, though it didn’t happen how anyone expected.

The Aviators opened the game aggressively, marching down the field on their opening drive before disaster struck deep in the red zone. Columbus quarterback Jalen Morton, making his first start of the season, threw a backward lateral that resulted in a live ball. Birmingham’s Alex Cook scooped it up and took it 80 yards to the house for an immediate defensive touchdown.

From there, momentum swung wildly throughout the first half.

Both offenses consistently found success on the ground and through the air. Birmingham’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson settled into a groove, utilizing a heavy dose of running back Tyrion Davis-Price to punch in a touchdown and extend the Stallions’ lead. By halftime, the teams had traded multiple explosive plays, leaving Birmingham narrowly ahead 20–14.

Columbus’s Big Plays Make the Difference

When the game tightened in the second half, the Aviators delivered in the biggest moments.

Quarterback Jalen Morton showcased his incredible resilience all night, completely shaking off his game-opening blunder to extend drives with his legs and make clutch throws under immense pressure. Columbus’s offense leaned heavily on explosive plays, including a spectacular 34-yard touchdown escape-and-throw from Morton to John Lovett in the third quarter.

The offensive line also played a major role, giving Morton just enough time to extend plays while opening up rushing lanes for timely gains that kept Birmingham’s aggressive front seven off balance.

Defensively, Columbus came up with the ultimate play late in the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 29, defensive back D.J. Miller Jr. jumped a Thompson-Robinson pass perfectly, intercepting it and racing 39 yards down the sideline for a breathtaking, game-winning pick-six.

Birmingham’s Rally Comes Up Just Short

The Stallions showed plenty of resilience despite the loss.

Thompson-Robinson kept Birmingham alive with dynamic playmaking, using chunk runs from Snoop Conner and steady targets to wideout Daewood Davis to keep the Stallions in scoring position. Kicker Anders Carlson nailed a 43-yard field goal to build a 26–21 lead late in the third, and the Stallions managed to fight back to a 29–29 tie in the final frame.

But Birmingham struggled to protect the football in critical moments, throwing two costly interceptions that swung the game entirely.

Despite putting up 29 points on the road, the Stallions left Columbus frustrated after their final 4th-and-long desperation prayer to the end zone fell incomplete as time expired.

Key Performers

  • Jalen Morton (CLB): 3 passing TDs, plus crucial rushing yards — put the team on his back in his first start.

  • John Lovett (CLB): 2 receptions, 54 yards, 2 TDs — dynamic threat out of the backfield who fueled the comeback.

  • Tony Fields II (CLB): 10 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFLs — an absolute force defensively flying all over the field.

  • Tyrion Davis-Price (BHM): Hard-nosed running and a rushing TD — key component in Birmingham’s balanced attack.

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown

  • 1st Quarter: A wild start features a Birmingham scoop-and-score and a bizarre blocked extra-point return. (BHM 6–2)

  • 2nd Quarter: Both offenses hit their stride as Davis-Price scores for BHM and Gunnar Oakes answers for Columbus. (BHM 20–14)

  • 3rd Quarter: Morton connects with Lovett for a 34-yard strike, but Carlson’s foot keeps the Stallions on top. (BHM 26–21)

  • 4th Quarter: After trading blows to lock it at 29, D.J. Miller Jr. delivers the game-winning pick-six to seal it. (Final: CLB 36–29)

Conclusion

The Columbus Aviators continue building momentum at exactly the right time.

By pulling off this signature home upset, Columbus proved they can execute under immense pressure against top-tier league competition. Their explosive defensive playmaking and ability to bounce back from early adversity make them a dangerous spoiler team heading into the final week of the season.

For Birmingham, the loss stings deeply.

The Stallions showed flashes of dominance but costly turnovers and defensive breakdowns late in the game severely dented their immediate postseason hopes. With the playoff race coming down to the wire, their margin for error has officially vanished.

Next up, Columbus looks to carry this high-energy momentum into their season finale, while Birmingham returns to the drawing board desperately needing a bounce-back win to keep their season alive.
