UFL Week 7 Orlando 24 Houston 23: A Quarterback’s Redemption

Publish Date: 05/11/2026
Fact checked by: Mike Goodpaster
Orlando needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive and that's exactly what they got this past weekend 24-23.

Orlando Storm 24, Houston Gamblers 23

HOUSTON, TX — At Shell Energy Stadium, the Orlando Storm kept their season alive in dramatic fashion, rallying late to stun the Houston Gamblers 24–23. In a game that flipped momentum multiple times, Orlando’s resilience—and Houston’s continued mistakes in critical moments—ultimately decided a one-point thriller in East Downtown.

The Turning Point: A Quarterback’s Redemption Drive

With just under five minutes remaining, Orlando found itself down 23–18 and staring at another crushing loss. Quarterback Deondre Francois, who had thrown an earlier interception, responded like a veteran. He engineered a composed 9-play, 72-yard drive that silenced the Houston crowd.

The defining moment came on 3rd-and-11 from the Houston 24. Francois slipped pressure, rolled right, and delivered a pinpoint throw to Jalen Redd near the pylon for the go-ahead touchdown. The two-point attempt failed, but Orlando’s defense made sure it didn’t matter—forcing a turnover on downs after a failed 4th-and-6 on Houston’s final possession.

The Battle in the Trenches

For three quarters, Houston controlled the line of scrimmage. Their defensive front suffocated Orlando’s rushing attack, limiting it to just 42 yards in the first half. On the other side, Houston’s offensive line consistently opened lanes for Mark Thompson, who punished defenders and powered the Gamblers’ offense.

Then the script flipped.

Orlando’s defensive front took over in the fourth quarter. Adjustments to pressure packages disrupted Houston’s rhythm, resulting in three sacks in the final period. What had been a fluid Gamblers offense turned into a stalled unit stuck in long-yardage situations, unable to close the game.

Self-Inflicted Wounds: Houston’s Special Teams Collapse

The difference in this game wasn’t talent—it was execution. Houston outgained Orlando 342–318 but repeatedly sabotaged itself in the third phase.

A missed 41-yard field goal in the second quarter loomed large. Even more costly was a botched extra-point snap after a Thompson touchdown. In a one-point game, those mistakes proved fatal.

For a team that has now dropped five one-score games, the pattern is clear: discipline and special teams breakdowns are sinking the season.

Key Performers

  • Deondre Francois (ORL): 19-of-31, 238 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT — bounced back from adversity to lead the game-winning drive.
  • Jalen Redd (ORL): 7 receptions, 94 yards, TD — the go-to weapon when it mattered most.
  • Mark Thompson (HOU): 21 carries, 88 yards, 2 TDs — the most physical presence on the field.
  • Chris Orr (ORL): 9 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFLs — anchored a defense that stiffened late.

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown

  • 1st Quarter: Orlando struck first with a field goal, but Houston answered with a Thompson TD run. (HOU 7–3)
  • 2nd Quarter: Francois found Chris Blair for a touchdown, and Houston added a late field goal. (10–10)
  • 3rd Quarter: Houston dominated—Thompson added another TD and the defense scored on a fumble return. (HOU 23–10)
  • 4th Quarter: Orlando surged back—Vic Enwere scored on the ground, then Francois hit Redd for the winner. (Final: ORL 24–23)

Conclusion

This was a gut-check win for the Orlando Storm, who proved they can close under pressure and steal games on the road. At 2–5, their playoff hopes remain faint—but alive.

For the Houston Gamblers, the story is painfully familiar. Another close loss, another game undone by mistakes, and another reminder that talent alone doesn’t win in crunch time. At 1–6, their season is effectively finished unless something changes fast.

Orlando heads to Dallas next Friday to face the Renegades, while Houston returns home searching for answers against the St. Louis Battlehawks.
