UFL Success Stories Shine During Week 1 of the 2026 NFL Preseason

UFL Success Stories Shine During Week 1 of the 2026 NFL Preseason

The path from the United Football League to the NFL was on full display during the opening week of the 2026 NFL preseason.

From award-winning defenders and championship heroes to running backs, receivers and defensive backs fighting for roster spots, former UFL standouts made an immediate impact across the league. The UFL Defensive Player of the Year recorded another sack, the United Bowl MVP found the end zone, and several former spring-football stars emerged as some of their NFL teams’ most productive players.

With roster battles beginning to intensify, these former UFL players are proving that their spring success can translate to the NFL.

Cam Gill Continues to Get After the Quarterback

LB Cam Gill — Carolina Panthers (Louisville Kings)

The 2026 UFL Defensive Player of the Year wasted little time making his presence felt with Carolina.

Gill recorded two tackles, 1.0 sack, one tackle for loss and two quarterback hits against the Buffalo Bills, continuing the momentum he created during an outstanding UFL season.

It wasn’t Gill’s first impressive NFL performance of the preseason, either. He also registered four tackles during the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game.

Gill’s ability to pressure quarterbacks was one of the qualities that made him the UFL’s top defensive player, and he is now showing Carolina that those skills can translate against NFL competition.

Ian Wheeler Goes From United Bowl MVP to Bills Touchdown Scorer

RB Ian Wheeler — Buffalo Bills (Louisville Kings)

Few players entered NFL training camp with more momentum than Ian Wheeler.

After earning United Bowl MVP honors, Wheeler delivered another strong performance in his Buffalo debut.

He led the Bills with 41 rushing yards on seven carries, averaging an impressive 5.9 yards per attempt.

Wheeler also found the end zone, scoring on an untouched 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

His combination of production, explosiveness and championship experience could make him one of the more interesting UFL players to follow throughout the remainder of the preseason.

Tanner Brown Remains Perfect in Saints Kicking Competition

K Tanner Brown — New Orleans Saints (Louisville Kings)

The UFL’s 2026 Special Teams Player of the Year is battling for an NFL roster spot in New Orleans, and Tanner Brown did everything he could to strengthen his case during Week 1.

Brown converted both of his field-goal attempts, connecting from 29 and 49 yards.

Kicking competitions can often be decided by only a handful of preseason opportunities, making every attempt important.

Brown’s perfect performance under game conditions was exactly what he needed as he attempts to win the Saints’ kicking job.

Jacob Saylors Explodes for Detroit

RB Jacob Saylors — Detroit Lions (St. Louis Battlehawks)

Jacob Saylors has already established himself as one of the greatest running backs in UFL history.

Now he’s attempting to make his mark in Detroit.

The UFL’s all-time leading rusher carried the ball eight times for 55 yards, including an explosive 27-yard run.

Saylors wasn’t limited to the running game.

He caught three passes for another 28 yards, finishing the preseason opener with 83 total yards from scrimmage.

His performance even caught the attention of Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who described Saylors as Detroit’s “most potent player on offense” during the preseason opener.

For a player battling for a spot in an NFL backfield, receiving that type of praise from the head coach is significant.

Kaden Davis Leads Bears Receiving Attack

WR Kaden Davis — Chicago Bears (Houston Gamblers)

Kaden Davis made perhaps one of the strongest statements of any former UFL receiver during the opening week.

The former Houston Gamblers wideout caught four passes for 88 yards, leading Chicago in receiving.

His biggest play was a 41-yard reception, displaying the big-play ability that could help separate him from other receivers fighting for roster spots.

Preseason football often creates opportunities for lesser-known receivers to make themselves impossible to ignore.

Davis took advantage of his.

Jayden Price Makes His Case With an Interception

DB Jayden Price — New Orleans Saints (Dallas Renegades)

Jayden Price contributed in multiple phases for New Orleans.

The former Dallas Renegades defensive back jumped a route for an interception and returned it 11 yards.

He also recorded a pass breakup while contributing on special teams with a 24-yard kickoff return.

Versatility can become extremely valuable when teams begin making final roster decisions.

A defensive back capable of making plays in coverage while contributing on special teams gives coaches another reason to keep him around.

Shaun Wade Forces a Fumble for Philadelphia

DB Shaun Wade — Philadelphia Eagles (Dallas Renegades)

Shaun Wade also made an impact in Philadelphia’s preseason opener.

The former Dallas Renegades cornerback finished with four solo tackles, one pass breakup and a forced fumble.

Creating turnovers can quickly get the attention of NFL coaching staffs, especially for players competing for backup defensive and special-teams roles.

Wade’s combination of tackling and ball production made his opening preseason performance an encouraging one.

Houston Gamblers Teammates Reunite in New Orleans

WR Jalen Moreno-Cropper and QB Hunter Dekkers — New Orleans Saints (Houston Gamblers)

One of the more interesting UFL-to-NFL stories came in New Orleans, where former Houston Gamblers teammates Jalen Moreno-Cropper and Hunter Dekkers were reunited.

Moreno-Cropper caught three passes for 49 yards, with two of those receptions coming from Dekkers.

Dekkers finished the Saints’ preseason opener 8-of-15 passing for 69 yards.

Their existing familiarity from Houston potentially gives both players an advantage as they attempt to establish themselves within the Saints offense.

Five Former UFL Players Reach the End Zone

The UFL’s influence wasn’t limited to yardage and defensive statistics.

Five former UFL players scored touchdowns during the opening week of NFL preseason action.

Marcus Alexander — Chicago Bears (Philadelphia Stars)

Alexander hauled in a 25-yard touchdown reception, scoring Chicago’s first touchdown of the preseason.

Tarik Black — Detroit Lions (Louisville Kings)

Black made his opportunity count by catching a 24-yard touchdown pass in Detroit’s preseason opener.

Erik Ezukanma — Philadelphia Eagles (DC Defenders)

Ezukanma caught a 6-yard touchdown pass, accounting for Philadelphia’s only touchdown of the game.

Austin Reed — Baltimore Ravens (Dallas Renegades)

With his twin baby girls in attendance, Reed produced one of the week’s best personal moments.

The quarterback scrambled 14 yards for a touchdown while also completing both of his passing attempts for 14 yards.

Ian Wheeler — Buffalo Bills (Louisville Kings)

Wheeler completed his impressive Buffalo debut by rushing untouched for a 6-yard fourth-quarter touchdown.

For a player coming directly off a United Bowl MVP performance, Wheeler continues to show a knack for producing when the games matter.

Other Former UFL Players Making an Impact

The list of UFL success stories extended well beyond the week’s biggest performances.

Several other members of the 2026 UFL class contributed during the opening week of NFL preseason competition:

  • DE Keshawn Banks — Atlanta Falcons (Orlando Storm): Two tackles and one quarterback hit in 24 defensive snaps.
  • DT Travis Bell — Cleveland Browns (Louisville Kings): Three tackles.
  • DB Major Burns — Miami Dolphins (Houston Gamblers): Five total tackles, second-most on Miami, including three solo tackles.
  • WR Cam Camper — New York Jets (Orlando Storm): Led the Jets in receiving with two catches for 37 yards.
  • DB Alex Cook — Los Angeles Rams (Birmingham Stallions): Four tackles.
  • DB Trey Dean III — Green Bay Packers (St. Louis Battlehawks): Three tackles.
  • WR Tay Martin — Detroit Lions (Columbus Aviators): Recorded a 14-yard sideline reception.
  • DB D.J. Miller Jr. — Buffalo Bills (Columbus Aviators): Two tackles.

Louisville Kings Continue to Produce NFL Talent

One of the biggest stories coming out of Week 1 was the number of former Louisville Kings players making an NFL impact.

Cam Gill, Ian Wheeler, Tanner Brown, Travis Bell and Tarik Black all contributed during the opening week.

Gill entered the NFL preseason as the UFL Defensive Player of the Year. Wheeler arrived as United Bowl MVP. Brown was the league’s Special Teams Player of the Year.

Their early NFL performances reinforce the idea that championship-level UFL teams can provide NFL organizations with players who have recently competed in meaningful professional football games.

Rather than arriving after months away from game action, UFL players enter NFL camps having played an entire competitive season.

That experience appears to be helping several of them.

The UFL-to-NFL Pipeline Continues to Grow

The greatest value of spring football may ultimately be the opportunity it provides players to put recent game film in front of NFL personnel.

Practice squads and training camps provide opportunities, but nothing replaces live football.

Players such as Gill, Wheeler, Saylors and Davis weren’t simply competing in workouts before receiving another NFL opportunity. They were producing in professional games.

That gives teams a much larger body of recent evidence when evaluating whether a player deserves another chance.

The first week of the NFL preseason showed exactly why the UFL can serve such an important role within professional football’s developmental system.

Conclusion: UFL Stars Are Making NFL Teams Take Notice

One week of preseason football doesn’t guarantee an NFL roster spot.

But it can create an opportunity.

Former UFL players certainly took advantage of theirs.

Cam Gill continued pressuring quarterbacks. Ian Wheeler carried his United Bowl success into Buffalo. Jacob Saylors emerged as one of Detroit’s most productive offensive players. Kaden Davis led Chicago in receiving. Tanner Brown remained perfect in New Orleans’ kicking competition.

Meanwhile, defensive backs created turnovers, receivers scored touchdowns and former UFL teammates reconnected on an NFL field.

The next challenge will be repeating those performances as competition increases and NFL teams move closer to final roster decisions.

For now, however, the message from Preseason Week 1 is clear:

The UFL-to-NFL pipeline is working, and some of spring football’s biggest stars are making NFL teams take notice.
