Top 10 NFL Offenses headed into the 2023 Season 2

Publish Date: 07/24/2023
Fact checked by: Simon Briffa

Top offenses

The top 3 are easy as the Bengals, Chiefs, and Eagles look to be the cream of the crop, but which team ranks number one?

10) San Fransisco 49ers

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Sam Darnold (QB), Brandon Allen (QB), Jake Brendel (C)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Jimmy Garoppolo (QB), Mike McGlinchey (OT), Daniel Brunskill (OG)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Cameron Latu (TE)

They have much potential heading into 2023.

McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle represent one of the premier trios of playmakers in the NFL.

One major challenge facing the 49ers’ offense is their offensive line.

Pro Football Focus ranks their offensive line 18th, heading into the 2023 NFL season.

San Francisco’s offensive line would likely rank among the worst in the league were it not for Trent Williams.

Kyle Shanahan has always been known for his offensive acumen.

With their stellar play calling and outstanding playmakers, the 49ers will once more possess one of the top offenses in 2023.

9) Baltimore Ravens

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Lamar Jackson (QB), Odell Beckham Jr (WR)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Kenyan Drake (RB), Demarcus Robinson (WR), Sammy Watkins (WR)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Zay Flowers (WR)

Baltimore signed their star QB to an extensive contract extension and added him some weapons.

Odell Beckham Jr’s signing in free agency marked an initial step in arming their arsenal with new weapons.

At the NFL Draft, they selected wide receiver Zay Flowers in round one to pair with Beckham.

The Ravens enjoyed an outstanding offseason, strengthening their offensive arsenal while signing Jackson to an extended deal.

Baltimore’s offensive line is also one of their top assets.

Pro Football Focus ranks Baltimore’s offensive line as fourth in the NFL heading into 2023 season.

8) Los Angeles Chargers

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Easton Stick (QB), Trey Pipkins (OT), Will Clapp (C), Jalen Guyton (WR)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Chase Daniel (QB), DeAndre Carter (WR), Storm Norton (OT), Matt Feiler (OG)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Quentin Johnston (WR)

Justin Herbert continued his stellar development in 2022, but injuries to Mike Williams and Keenan Allen hindered the offense last season.

Last season, the Los Angeles Chargers weren’t as dynamic in their running backfield as needed.

However, Herbert provides this offense with tremendous promise moving forward.

Quentin Johnston of TCU will join their offense and help further expand it.

Los Angeles will now boast an elite group of receivers going into next season.

Pro Football Focus ranks the Chargers offensive line as ninth best entering the 2023 NFL season.

With Justin Herbert at quarterback, the Chargers should boast one of the premier offenses in 2023.

7) Buffalo Bills

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Damien Harris (RB), Kyle Allen (QB), Latavius Murray (RB), Trent Sherfield (WR), Connor McGovern (OG), David Edwards (OG), David Quessenberry (OG)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Case Keenum (QB), Devin Singletary (RB), Cole Beasley (WR), Jamison Crowder (WR), Isaiah McKenzie (WR)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Dalton Kincaid (TE), O’Cyrus Torrence (OG)

Last season was not what the Buffalo Bills had anticipated.

However, Josh Allen and the offense had an outstanding year.

An elbow injury could have interrupted an impressive offensive performance all year.

Stefon Diggs remains one of the top receivers in the league.

Buffalo does have some weaknesses on offense.

Last year’s run game was far too weak.

Another area of weakness lies within the offensive line.

Pro Football Focus ranks Buffalo’s offensive line 22nd for the 2023 NFL season.

Buffalo failed to address its running game during this offseason, yet hopes Dalton Kincaid becomes an effective secondary passer in its pass game.

Josh Allen makes up for his lack of run game through legs and arm strength alone.

Last season, the Bills finished third in points per game across all league competition.

With Allen and Diggs on board, Buffalo will once more boast one of the premier offenses in the league.

6) Miami Dolphins

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Mike White (QB), Raheem Mostert (RB), Myles Gaskin (RB), Jeff Wilson (RB), Braxton Berrios (WR)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Teddy Bridgewater (QB), Trent Sherfield (WR), Mike Gesicki (TE), Greg Little (OT)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Devon Achane (RB)

Tua Tagovailoa was one of the critical components in the Miami Dolphins’ potency when healthy. Their offense was one of the best in the league.

They could match up against any team in the league in terms of offense.

Tyreek Hill lived up to expectations after Miami traded many high-end draft picks for him.

Hill and Jaylen Waddle formed an influential tandem when Tua was at center.

If Tua were healthy enough, Miami could easily make our list as one of the top five offenses here.

However, Tua’s short and long-term health are now at risk.

One more concussion could end his season and career.

Pro Football Focus ranks Miami’s offensive line as 20th in preparation for this NFL season.

Tua faces increased risks, which is why the Dolphins don’t rank higher on this list.

If Tua can remain healthy in 2023, Miami’s offense will be electrifying and one of the premier units in all of NFL.

5) Detroit Lions

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Nate Sudfeld (QB), David Montgomery (RB), Marvin Jones (WR), Graham Glasgow (C/OG)
  • Key Departures on Offense: D’Andre Swift (RB), Jamaal Williams (RB), Justin Jackson (RB), D.J. Chark (WR), Evan Brown (C), Dan Skipper (OT)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Jahmyr Gibbs (RB), Sam LaPorta (TE), Hendon Hooker (QB).

Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions’ offense performed admirably in 2022.

Last year, they placed fifth in PPG.

Goff excelled more at home than on the road last year.

If Goff can improve his play away from Ford Field, Detroit’s offense will only become stronger.

Detroit boasts one of the league’s premier offensive lines.

Pro Football Focus ranks Detroit’s offensive line fifth best entering the 2023 NFL season.

They traded away D’Andre Swift and lost Jamaal Williams during the off-season.

Swift and Williams had formed an effective rushing attack for Detroit before their departure; however, the Lions have since added new running backs to their roster.

They drafted Jahmyr Gibbs and signed David Montgomery during the offseason.

Detroit will boast an even more potent rushing attack in 2023.

The Lions will boast one of the top offenses in 2023 if Goff can continue his progress on the road.

4) Dallas Cowboys

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Tony Pollard (RB), Cooper Rush (QB), Brandin Cooks (WR), Ronald Jones (RB)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Ezekiel Elliott (RB), Dalton Schultz (TE), T.Y. Hilton (WR), Noah Brown (WR), Connor McGovern (OG), Jason Peters (OT)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Luke Schoonmaker (TE)

The Dallas Cowboys had an outstanding offense in 2022, yet still felt that it could have been better.

Dak Prescott missed the opening quarter of the season due to an injury.

After showing signs of improvement midseason, he unexpectedly became an interception machine in the final weeks.

Dallas possesses the talent necessary to construct an effective offensive attack.

Though they parted ways with Ezekiel Elliott and Dalton Schultz, Tony Pollard emerged as their best running back last season.

Brandin Cooks proved himself an outstanding second WR, providing reliable play at number 2.

CeeDee Lamb and Cooks make an unbeatable duo at WR.

Dallas boasts an outstanding offensive line.

Pro Football Focus ranks the offensive line sixth out of seven heading into the 2023 NFL season.

Dallas should make their primary priority this season to decrease Prescott’s interceptions.

Dallas finished fourth in terms of points per game last season, and there is every reason to believe they can remain among the top five in PPG this time around.

In 2023, the Cowboys will boast one of the league’s premier offenses and boast one of its most dynamic players on offense.

3) Philadelphia Eagles

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Jalen Hurts (QB), Marcus Mariota (QB), Rashaad Penny (RB), D’Andre Swift (RB), Jason Kelce (C), Boston Scott (RB)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Gardner Minshew (QB), Miles Sanders (RB), Andre Dillard (OT), Isaac Seumalo (OG), Zach Pascal (WR)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Tyler Steen (OT)

The Philadelphia Eagles boast an explosive offense.

Pro Football Focus ranks Philadelphia’s offensive line as the best in the league heading into the 2023 NFL season.

The offense is highly versatile and capable of finding success through different avenues.

Jalen Hurts has emerged as an MVP finalist. Each day, he improves further.

Philadelphia boasts two exceptional wide receivers in, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

They opted to replace Miles Sanders with D’Andre Swift.

Dallas Goedert is an excellent and trustworthy TE.

Philadelphia was fourth in rushing yards per game and ninth in passing yards per game last year.

Last season, the Eagles averaged the second-most points per game (PPG).

Although it will be challenging for the Eagles to return to the Super Bowl two consecutive years, if they remain relatively healthy they could become contenders for Lombardi Trophy glory.

2) Kansas City Chiefs

Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Blaine Gabbert (QB), Jerick McKinnon (RB), Richie James (WR) and Justin Watson (WR). Donovan Smith, Jawaan Taylor, Nick Allegretti and Blake Bell also signed deals to strengthen the offense.

Key Departures on Offense include Orlando Brown (OT), Andrew Wylie (OT), Juju Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, Chad Henne (QB) and Ronald Jones (RB) Key NFL Draft Additions included Rashee Rice (WR) and Wanya Morris (OT).

Kansas City Chiefs still boast Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and Travis Kelce as main assets.

Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL; Reid is the best offensive mind; and Kelce is the top play-making TE in the league.

Last season, the Chiefs led their league in PPG and passing yards per game.

They accomplished this despite trading away star wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Though they lost Orlando Brown and other key offensive pieces, they brought in suitable replacements.

Jawaan Taylor will attempt to replace Orlando Brown.

Mahomes seems unstoppable no matter who he has at his disposal.

1. Cincinnati Bengals

  • Key Offensive Additions/Re-signings: Trevor Siemian (QB), Trent Taylor (WR), Drew Sample (TE), Irv Smith (TE), Orlando Brown (OT), Cody Ford (OG), Max Scharping (OG)
  • Key Departures on Offense: Brandon Allen (QB), Samaje Perine (RB), Hayden Hurst (TE)
  • Key NFL Draft Additions: Charlie Jones (WR), Chase Brown (RB)

There were some questions about whether Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals’ success in 2021 was a fluke.

Nobody is wondering that anymore.

Burrow is a top 2-3 QB in the NFL, and there may not be a better WR duo in the league than Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

The priority for the Bengals once again was to improve their offensive line, and they did that.

Cincinnati signed superstar offensive tackle Orlando Brown.

This move significantly improves the offensive line.

Pro Football Focus ranks the offensive line 17th in the league entering the 2023 NFL season, but they could be much better with Brown.

With Burrow under center and Chase and Higgins at WR, the Bengals will have an elite offense in 2023.
