The Steelers are expected to name Omar Khan as their next general manager, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Check out the best bookmakers for betting on the NFL.
After interviewing more than a dozen candidates for the general manager position, the Steelers selected Khan. He spent the past six seasons as the vice president of football and business administration. In that role, he was responsible for managing the Steelers’ salary cap.
Khan was considered a favorite during the exhaustive search that also included interviews with Brandon Hunt, the Steelers’ director of pro scouting. Outgoing general manager Kevin Colbert announced he was stepping down following the 2021 season, but he left open the possibility to stay on in an advisory role after more than two decades with the Steelers.
The Steelers, meanwhile, have also hired Eagles VP of player personnel Andy Weidl as their assistant GM, a source told ESPN’s Tim McManus, confirming a report by NFL reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala. Check out the top new sportsbooks!
Khan, 44, joined the Steelers in 2001, after he was introduced to the NFL by the Saints in 1997. Before he was elected director of football administration in 2011, Khan served as the Pittsburgh football administration coordinator. Khan was elevated to the position of VP football and business administration in 2016. Khan has been with the Steelers for 21 years and they have won three AFC titles and two Super Bowls.
Khan will be following in the footsteps of Colbert’s, who built rosters that won 10 division titles, three AFC championships and two Super Bowls. In Colbert’s 22-year tenure in Pittsburgh, the Steelers reached the playoffs 14 times. Their 18-year streak of non-losing seasons, which ended with a loss, is the longest streak in the NFL.
Colbert follows the legendary Big Ben Roethlisberger into retirement, Khan and new quarterback Kenny Pickett will have big shows to fill and the pressure from the Steelers fan base will be immense.
