The Seahawks traded away a franchise quarterback still in his prime.. While I hoped they would pursue a viable replacement, they are now heading into 2022 with Lock Geno Smith as their two quarterbacks. From having a true star under center, they now have two replacement-level veterans with no clear path to their next franchise quarterback. It’s a complete disaster. The Seahawks also committed to their 1970s-style offense beyond the Wilson deal. In light of concerns about Chris Carson’s health, Seattle signed Rashaad Pheny to a one-year, $5.8m deal. Then, they used a second-round pick on Ken Walker. The Seahawks should be aware of how easy it can be to find running backs with late-round picks. They traded one for Marshawn Lynn and used the 249th pick in 2017 to draft Carson. Even if they do succeed, this team is too busy to continue spending significant cash and draft capital on tailbacks.
Fant will replace Gerald Everett in the lineup. But I was stunned to see Seattle sign another tight end Will Dissly for a $24 million, three-year deal. Dissly’s deal looks more like a $10.8 million one-year contract, but that’s still TE1 money for someone who hasn’t exceeded 262 receiving yards in a single pro season. Dissly is an excellent blocker. However, the Seahawks require him to be a Rob Gronkowski-level blocking player to justify such a contract and he is not that. What they could have done differently: They could have retained Wilson and fired Carroll. Seattle made the wrong decision if the relationship between head coach and quarterback had become so bad that one needed to be fired. Carroll is 70 years old and has been an excellent NFL coach. He has lost the defense he helped to mold into the league’s best, and the Seahawks are now 21st in defensive DVOA a decade ago. Carroll’s selections for coordinators didn’t work out and the unit has struggled with draft effectiveness for most of the past decade. It is hard to believe that in five years, we will look back and see the Seahawks making the right decision between their quarterback and head coach.
What’s next? re-sign DK Metcalf. He was the subject of trade rumors during the draft. Although I would not be surprised if the Seahawks traded their star wideout. The offseason has been a disaster for the Seahawks and they roll into the season with an old coach who it seems time has passed by and no real quarterback to get anything done. I look for this season to be Carroll’s last in Seattle. I also expect that the Seahawks will finish last in the NFC West.
