Sunday Night Football features an intriguing AFC matchup as the 0-1 Indianapolis Colts visit the 1-0 Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Indianapolis opened the season with a disappointing 41-23 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Colts surrendered 506 total yards and fell behind 31-13 by halftime. Daniel Jones completed 19 of 31 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Jonathan Taylor was Indianapolis’ biggest offensive bright spot with 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Alec Pierce led the Colts with four catches for 61 yards.
Kansas City delivered one of Week 1’s most impressive performances, defeating Denver 31-10 on Monday Night Football. Kenneth Walker III exploded for 173 rushing yards on 23 carries and finished with 191 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in his Chiefs debut. Patrick Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while adding a rushing touchdown.
Kansas City’s defense was equally impressive, limiting Denver to just 176 total yards, nine first downs and a 2-for-12 performance on third down while recording four sacks and two takeaways.
The current market matches the supplied number, with Kansas City favored by 6.5 points and the total sitting at 47.5.
One naming note: the venue is commonly called Arrowhead Stadium, while its current official sponsored name is GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Colts’ official schedule confirms the Sunday night kickoff and NBC broadcast.
Exact player props vary by sportsbook. The numbers below are projected betting targets unless your book offers them.
This matchup immediately stands out after what Walker and the Indianapolis defense did in Week 1.
Walker rushed 23 times for 173 yards and a touchdown, averaging 7.5 yards per carry against Denver. He also caught three passes for 18 yards and another score.
Indianapolis, meanwhile, allowed Baltimore’s Derrick Henry to rush for 144 yards and three touchdowns, while the Ravens accumulated 506 total yards.
Kansas City showed that it is willing to build its offense around Walker rather than forcing Mahomes to carry the entire attack.
Projected Bet: Kenneth Walker III Over 84.5 Rushing Yards
Mahomes wasn’t asked to throw for huge yardage against Denver because Walker and the Chiefs’ defense controlled the game.
He still threw two touchdown passes and added another score on the ground in his first regular-season game since suffering a season-ending knee injury in 2025.
Indianapolis allowed Baltimore to score 41 points in Week 1 and surrendered 506 yards. If Kansas City consistently reaches the red zone, Mahomes should have multiple opportunities to finish drives through the air.
Projected Bet: Patrick Mahomes Over 1.5 Passing Touchdowns
Kelce caught only three passes against Denver, but those receptions produced 71 yards, including a 59-yard catch.
Indianapolis allowed Lamar Jackson to throw for 324 yards in its opener, and the Colts had difficulty preventing explosive plays throughout the afternoon.
Kansas City’s ability to establish Walker on the ground could create favorable play-action opportunities for Kelce in the middle of the field.
Projected Bet: Travis Kelce Over 49.5 Receiving Yards
Indianapolis scored 23 points against Baltimore, but the final score doesn’t tell the entire offensive story.
The Colts generated only 251 total yards, with Jones throwing for just 166. Kansas City’s defense enters this matchup after holding Denver to 10 points and 176 total yards.
Walker also gives Kansas City an opportunity to control possession, shorten the game and avoid turning every Chiefs matchup into a Mahomes shootout.
Indianapolis could have difficulty producing enough explosive plays to push this game comfortably above the total.
Bet: Under 47.5 Points
Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City: Completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against Denver while also rushing seven times for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Kenneth Walker III, RB, Kansas City: The biggest offensive story of Kansas City’s opener. Walker produced 173 rushing yards and 191 yards from scrimmage with two touchdowns.
Travis Kelce, TE, Kansas City: Caught three passes for 71 yards, including a 59-yard reception, and moved past Jason Witten into second place in career receiving yards among NFL tight ends.
Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis: Indianapolis’ most productive offensive weapon in Week 1, rushing 19 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns while adding three receptions for 23 yards.
Daniel Jones, QB, Indianapolis: Completed 19 of 31 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his return from the injury that ended his 2025 season.
Alec Pierce, WR, Indianapolis: Led the Colts with four catches for 61 yards against Baltimore.
Kansas City enters a short week after playing Denver on Monday night.
Rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane suffered a shoulder injury after intercepting Bo Nix early in the opener and was scheduled for an MRI. X-rays were negative. Linebacker Cooper McDonald also left the Denver game with a knee injury.
Josh Simmons and Chamarri Conner missed the opener and were listed as questionable for Week 2 in an early Tuesday injury update. Because it is only Tuesday, the full official Week 2 practice report has not yet established final game statuses.
Indianapolis does receive some help in the secondary: cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt has been reinstated following his one-game suspension and appears on the Colts’ Week 2 depth chart.
Everything begins with Jonathan Taylor.
Indianapolis cannot afford to put the entire game on Jones’ arm, especially in a loud road environment against a Kansas City defense that just overwhelmed Denver.
Taylor averaged 5.2 yards per carry against Baltimore, and establishing him early would allow Indianapolis to use play-action while keeping Mahomes and Walker on the sideline.
The Colts’ defense also has to improve dramatically against the run. After Henry rushed for 144 yards and three scores, Indianapolis now faces a back who just produced 173 rushing yards in his Kansas City debut.
The Colts must force Kansas City into obvious passing situations rather than allowing Walker to dictate the game.
Keep feeding Kenneth Walker III.
Kansas City may have discovered the offensive balance it lacked during its 6-11 season in 2025. Walker’s explosiveness means defenses can no longer devote all their attention to Mahomes and Kansas City’s passing game.
The Chiefs also need to attack Indianapolis early.
Baltimore jumped on the Colts and scored touchdowns on four of five drives after Indianapolis’ opening possession.
Defensively, Kansas City’s priority should be straightforward: slow Taylor and make Jones win the game from the pocket.
If the Chiefs force Indianapolis into second-and-long and third-and-long situations, Chris Jones and the Kansas City pass rush should have opportunities to take over.
This matchup favors Kansas City in several important areas.
The Chiefs have the superior quarterback, home-field advantage, an emerging rushing attack and a defense coming off an outstanding performance.
Indianapolis has one major weapon capable of changing the game in Taylor, and the Colts cannot abandon him simply because they fall behind.
The problem is Kansas City doesn’t necessarily have to score quickly.
Walker gives Andy Reid the ability to sustain drives and control the clock, while Mahomes can attack Indianapolis when the Colts bring additional defenders toward the line of scrimmage.
The 6.5-point spread is significant, but Kansas City’s defensive performance against Denver combined with Indianapolis’ problems against Baltimore makes the Chiefs the preferred side at that number.
The total is more interesting.
Kansas City is capable of scoring 30 points, but Indianapolis may struggle to contribute enough for this game to reach the high 40s.
Indianapolis should lean heavily on Taylor and may keep the game competitive early, but Kansas City’s balance eventually becomes too much.
Walker surpasses 100 rushing yards for the second consecutive week, while Mahomes takes advantage of Indianapolis’ focus on stopping the run for multiple touchdown passes.
The Chiefs’ defense makes the defining plays in the second half and prevents Jones from generating enough explosive passes to keep Indianapolis within one possession.
Final Score Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs 30, Indianapolis Colts 17
