Two AFC playoff hopefuls collide Sunday as the 1-0 Cincinnati Bengals visit the 0-1 Houston Texans.
Cincinnati opened its season with a 33-27 victory over Tampa Bay, powered by a revamped defense that forced four turnovers. Joe Burrow completed 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Chase Brown produced 78 scrimmage yards and a rushing touchdown. Mike Gesicki led Cincinnati with five catches for 78 yards and a score.
Houston lost a thriller to Buffalo 36-31 despite leading late in the fourth quarter. C.J. Stroud completed 26 of 38 passes for 274 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, while David Montgomery scored three touchdowns in his Texans debut. Nico Collins caught seven passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.
One correction worth noting: Reliant Stadium is the correct current name. The former NRG Stadium returned to its original Reliant Stadium name in August 2026.
The betting market has moved slightly from the supplied Houston -2.5. CBS currently lists the Texans around -3 with a 46.5 total, so Cincinnati bettors may be able to find the valuable +3.
Exact player props vary by sportsbook. The numbers below are projected betting targets unless your book offers them.
Burrow threw for 254 yards against Tampa Bay despite Ja’Marr Chase being held to only two catches for 12 yards.
Houston allowed Josh Allen to throw for 334 yards in Week 1. With Chase, Tee Higgins and Gesicki available, Cincinnati should attack Houston’s secondary more aggressively than it did against Tampa Bay.
Projected Bet: Joe Burrow Over 249.5 Passing Yards
Collins immediately resumed his role as Stroud’s premier target, catching seven of 10 targets for 75 yards and a touchdown against Buffalo.
Cincinnati’s defense created turnovers against Tampa Bay, but the Buccaneers still scored 27 points. Collins should remain heavily involved.
Projected Bet: Nico Collins Over 69.5 Receiving Yards
Gesicki was Cincinnati’s leading receiver in the opener with 78 yards and a touchdown on seven targets.
Houston’s linebacker depth is a concern. Henry To’oTo’o is expected to miss time with a shoulder injury, while Jake Hummel is dealing with a groin injury. That could create opportunities for Gesicki in the middle of the field.
Projected Bet: Mike Gesicki Over 44.5 Receiving Yards
Cincinnati’s opener produced 60 total points, while Houston’s produced 67.
Both quarterbacks moved the football effectively, and Houston’s Week 1 defense allowed 36 points despite entering the season with high expectations.
Bet: Over 46.5 Points
Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati: Completed 71.4% of his passes for 254 yards in Week 1.
Ja’Marr Chase, WR, Cincinnati: Held to 12 yards against Tampa Bay, making him a prime bounce-back candidate.
Mike Gesicki, TE, Cincinnati: Five catches, 78 yards and a touchdown in the opener.
C.J. Stroud, QB, Houston: Threw for 274 yards and two scores without an interception against Buffalo.
Nico Collins, WR, Houston: Seven catches, 75 yards and a touchdown in Week 1.
David Montgomery, RB, Houston: Scored three touchdowns in his Texans debut—two rushing and one receiving.
The Bengals must protect Burrow against Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter. Cincinnati’s offensive line performed well enough in Week 1, but Houston’s edge rush presents a much more dangerous test. The Bengals themselves identified that matchup as one of the game’s defining battles entering the season.
Cincinnati also needs Chase involved early after his quiet opener.
Houston must finish. The Texans led Buffalo late but allowed Allen to engineer the winning touchdown drive.
Montgomery gives Houston a physical rushing presence, and maintaining offensive balance will help prevent Cincinnati’s upgraded defensive front from attacking Stroud on every snap.
This is close to a toss-up.
Houston has home-field advantage and an elite pass rush, while Cincinnati brings the more proven quarterback-receiver combination and enters with confidence after forcing four turnovers in Week 1.
The Texans’ linebacker injuries make Cincinnati’s short passing game particularly interesting, but Houston should create enough pressure on Burrow to produce one decisive mistake.
At Houston -2.5, the number is playable. At -3 or higher, Cincinnati becomes considerably more attractive.
Expect a competitive AFC matchup that remains within one possession throughout the fourth quarter.
Burrow and Stroud both surpass 250 passing yards, but Montgomery’s rushing attack and Houston’s defensive front make the difference late.
Final Score Prediction: Houston Texans 27, Cincinnati Bengals 24
Best Bet: Over 46.5
Against the Spread: Houston -2.5
