To enhance security, the Las Vegas Raiders donated $1 million to Uvalde

Raiders donation!

Following last month’s mass shooting at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School in Texas, Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis has announced a $1 million donation to the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District to go toward security precautions during a Zoom call. The donation will be used to tighten security across its campuses, not just the affected Robb Elementary, by installing impenetrable doors, cameras inside and outside each school, and unscalable fencing on school grounds.

Raiders owner Mark Davis contacted former Raiders player Vann McElroy, according to the Uvalde Leader-News. The retired player went to Uvalde High School and still lives in the area. When Davis asked what he could do to help, McElroy stated that the school district needed $1 million to improve security.

Support for Uvalde

The city of Uvalde, Texas, is still recovering from the terrible tragedies of May 24, which gunned down 19 children and two adults.

McElroy retired from the Seattle Seahawks and now resides in Uvalde, Texas. He told Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer that he was driving by the school to get lunch while the incident was unfolding.

“As I was driving through, I began to notice the exits that would be going in and out of the school. There were starting to be lines of cars, and then I began to notice police cars and the lights flashing. ”

McElroy added, “And then behind me on both sides, you saw policemen, highway patrolmen; they all had their lights on, just flying in from every road you can imagine. I had no clue what was going on at the time. I’m just going. Goodness gracious.”

Vann William McElroy is a former professional American football defensive back who played in the NFL for nine seasons and was drafted in the third round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Raiders. He currently also has a grandson who is attending school in Uvalde.

Davis expressed his hope that the events in the Uvalde school district will serve as a model for others to follow, and that the Raiders’ financial assistance will motivate others to help those in need.

Since that fateful day in Texas, millions of people have rallied to assist the survivors, their families, and the Uvalde community. Many professional athletes have contributed to this, with athletes either making donations or visiting Uvalde to offer support.

“We thank Mr. Davis and the Raiders organization for this very generous gift. Vann is a life-long friend and a huge part of Uvalde.” UCISD Superintendent Hal Harrell said.

“We will put this money to good use. This contribution should go a long way in making our schools safer. ”

The Las Vegas Raiders are the latest NFL team to make a donation to those affected by the Uvalde incident in the weeks following the tragedy; earlier this month, both the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans made charitable contributions to the victims’ families.
