The NFL Draft can is where teams build for the future and some teams that are borderline try to get over the playoff hump. Let’s take a look at the 5 best moves of last week’s NFL Draft?
5) The Ravens select Hayden Hurst and Lamar Jackson – I have a ton of questions about Jackson, but I know that he is going into the right situation with Greg Roman as his offensive coordinator and Head Coach John Harbaugh. He also has the luxury of not having to play right away unless Joe Flacco’s back is not healed by game number one. The best friend of a young Quarterback is a security blanket tight end and in Husrt the Raven got Flacco and in the future Jackson just that with the addition of Hayden Hurst.
4) The Patriots help out an aging Quarterback – I know Tom Brady has shown no signs of aging but he does need help on the offensive line and he got it with the selection of Guard Isaiah Wynn. The Patriots I believe will try to convert Wynn to a tackle and from watching his film I think that shouldn’t be a problem. They also added running back Sony Michel who is a perfect compliment to the Patriots offense.
3) Tampa Bay takes advantage of Buffalo – The Bucs going into last year were a sexy pick to make the playoffs but that disappeared quickly as the season progressed. The Bucs seem to be copying the Eagles playbook for being a winner and that is very smart. The Bucs even after trading down were able to get a big-time defensive tackle in Vita Vea. If Jameis Winston can become more consistent the sky could be the limit for this young and talented Bucs team.
2) Giants not trading pick two and selecting Saquon Barkley – The Giants obviously feel with this selection they can win now. Barkley will add an entirely different dimension to the Giants offense and if Eli Manning has anything left the Giants could be playoff contenders this year. Remember this team was in the playoffs just two years ago on the strength of a quality defense.
1) Chargers strengthen defense – The Chargers picked up Safety Derwin James in this draft and with that addition could have the best secondary in the NFL. Now the Chargers will have James plus Casey Hayward, Jason Verrett, Trevor Williams and Jahleel Addae in the defensive backfield. I think heading into this season you would have to favor the Chargers to win the AFC West.
