Rookie quarterback, Brock Purdy, threw the San Francisco 49ers into the play-offs with a fine 21-13 win over their divisional rivals, Seattle Seahawks. The result meant that the 49ers have now secured the NFC West title and they follow Minnesota Vikings in being the second team in the NFL to make the play-offs.
It was just the second NFL start for the 22-year-old Purdy and he showed his potential again by throwing two touchdown passes to the 49ers tight end George Kittle. The 49ers are now among the favorites in the betting picks to make the Super Bowl as it marked their seventh win in a row and has helped them get a 10-4 record after an indifferent start to their campaign.
Purdy was given the Mr. Irrelevant moniker as this is the nickname given to the player who gets picked last in the NFL draft. However, the young quarterback has repeatedly shown that he can handle the pressure as he filled into the role following injuries to the usual QB starters, Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance.
While the jury is still out as to whether the 49ers have solved their quarterback issue, it has shortened the odds for San Francisco going all the way at most of the best US sports betting sites. Purdy has so far landed no less than six touchdown passes in his first three games which isn’t bad considering that he was the 262nd draft pick.
He made a major splash for the 49ers when he was part of the team’s 35-7 demolition job of Tampa Bay Buccaneers the previous week. This made Purdy the first quarterback to beat Tom Brady on his career start.
Not that the youngster is showing any signs of slowing down. He threw 217 yards against Seattle and completed 17 out of 26 of his passes. Elsewhere there were decent performances from Kittle who made four catches for 93 yards, while newcomer Christian McCaffery had a great rushing game.
The victory for the 49ers has made them divisional champions of the NFC West with just three games left to go. It’s a big surprise to find that the Seahawks are back in the mix as the team are now on 7-7 and in theory, they could potentially land a wildcard spot.
Much of this has come from Seahawks quarterback, Geno Smith who has helped Seattle find their form late on in the season. Elsewhere it’s been a brutal coming back down to reality for Los Angeles Rams who are now 4-9 ahead of a tough game against the Green Bay Packers tomorrow.
Arizona Cardinals have also had a season to forget with their 4-10 record now coming after a dismal 24-15 defeat by the lowly Denver Broncos. But while it’s grim at the bottom of the NFC West, most 49ers fans will be getting some sportsbook offers and hoping their team have what it takes to make it to Super Bowl 57.
