People didn’t think Kenny Pickett would be that great when he entered the 2022ย NFLย draft. Some reports said his measurements at the NFL combine were not impressive, holding back a few teams.
Given his success at Pitt, it’s quite interesting that he dropped in the draft because of those measurements.
NFL.com has the following to report from Mike Tomlin, Steelers’ organization:
โThat was all I planned to play him,โ the Steelers coachย said of Pickett. โI wouldโve liked to have possessed the ball more in the first half and thus have a bigger body of work. Some things are outside of your control. We gotta get first downs for that to happen.
โItโs probably who he is,โ Tomlin said of Pickettโs ability to succeed under pressure. โI know he did it next door (at the University of Pittsburgh). He probably did it in high school and he probably did it in little league. Some things, people are born with.โ
โI thought Mitch played well,โ Tomlin said of Trubisky. โI thought he created and extended some things when there wasnโt much there. But weโve got to do a better job of protecting him and having some semblance of a run game if you want a fair evaluation, and Iโm just being bluntly honest.โ
โWeโll address depth chart-related things over the next couple of days as we zero in on our next opportunity,โ Tomlin said. โI donโt make knee-jerk reactions or statements following the performance.โ
Kenny Pickett will still have much to prove if he will be the QB1 for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. What heโs done during preseason so far certainly warrants him the opportunity to have a chance to be that.
