I actually heard people make this comparison last week, and at the time, I thought, slow down a little bit; after Sunday I am sure the comparison will stop.
The San Francisco 49ers’ were stunned as they fell to the Cleveland Browns, marking Brock Purdy’s first loss as a starter and and San Francisco’s first defeat this season.
After opening up their game 10-0, the 49ers emerged ahead at halftime despite only holding onto a three-point advantage. Although Dustin Hopkins only scored one touchdown during this half, his 12 second-half points proved enough for Cleveland’s victory.
Christian McCaffrey began the game off right, scoring a touchdown in his 15 consecutive game to tie two Pro Football Hall-of-Famers, John Riggins and O.J. Simpson, as having achieved this milestone. This accomplishment ranks second-most among all NFL players, including post-season performances.
San Francisco could not overcome Cleveland’s defense in their attempt to maintain their offensive momentum – especially without McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel due to injury – as Purdy made his first interception this season and completed only 12 passes for 125 yards.
Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field goal with six seconds left, ending the 49ers’ regular-season winning streak at 15 games.
The Cincinnati Bengals defense saved the day in the Bengals’ 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Joe Byrrow came out on fire in the first quarter, but after the first couple of drives the Bengals offence was horrible. Luckily the defense stepped up to help the Bengals even their record at 3-3 on the season.
What is up with the Bengals once prolific offense, maybe the calf is till bothering Burrow, or maybe it’s just bad pay calling, I don’t know, but I do know if it doesn’t get straightened out fast, this could be a long year in Cincinnati.
Few teams enjoy playing football quite as much as the Lions do these days, which speaks volumes about their excellence on the field.
Leading the National Football Conference North, the Detroit Lions remain strong contenders, having held Tampa Bay Buccaneers to only two field goals during a 20-6 win and improving to 5-1 on the year thanks to a dominating defense.
Detroit has scored 20 or more points in 14 consecutive games, tying its franchise record, led by quarterback Jared Goff. However, credit goes to Isaiah Buggs for tipping a Baker Mayfield pass meant for Mike Evans that Will Harris intercepted to stop a potential touchdown score and instead take an early 3-0 lead.
As far as offense goes, even without key players like David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs due to injuries, fill-in Craig Reynolds made a vital play on third and 13 to set up Amon-Ra St. Brown for a touchdown score.
Coach Dan Campbell has a team that is flying around and having fun right now, the Lions look like a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
In 12 prior meetings against the Eagles, the Jets had never won. Losing their starting quarterback on day one only compounded this difficulty as it seemed unbeatable to take down defending NFC champions Philadelphia Eagles.
At a time when New York’s offense had been inconsistent and trailing by two with two minutes remaining in regulation, Jets safety Tony Adams jumped a route, grabbed an Eagles pass intended for tight end Dallas Goedert and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown – seemingly swinging momentum into their favor. Hurts completed 28-of-45 passes for 280 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions during that game.
Running back Breece Hall scored the go-ahead touchdown on a nine-yard play, and quarterback Zach Wilson found Randall Cobb for an easy two-point conversion that nearly sealed their 20-14 win.
Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud is playing well enough to lead them to victories in three of their past four games, as he recently threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns against the New Orleans Saints for a 20-13 win.
Houston has already equaled their win total from last season (3-13-1). Stroud made history, setting an NFL record by throwing 191 passes without an interception to start his career, surpassing Dak Prescott.
Nico Collins struck Zack Baun, forcing a fumble that gave back possession to the Texans and allowing Stroud to connect with Dalton Schultz on a one-yard touchdown play and give Houston an 8-7 edge.
Houston will enjoy a bye week before facing Carolina in Week 8, Stroud has proven to be the real deal so far and things are looking up in Houston.
A hand injury kept Fields out of the latest Bears loss to the Vikings. Fields has had an erratic start to his career in Chicago, and with the Bears holding two first-round picks, the Quarterback of the future is playing on Saturday afternoons right now. Next year’s quarterback draft will be stacked with talent; the only issue is that the Bears will be able to pick the right Quarterback; they have poorly missed since getting Jim McMahon.
The Jets, once thought to be dead after losing Aaron Rodgers to an Achilles injury, have rebounded to 3-3 with three winnable games after their Week 7 bye — Giants, Chargers and Raiders. Their defense, forcing four turnovers against Jalen Hurts while providing three interceptions and shutting down A.J. Brown in the second half without their starting cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed due to concussion issues, respectively, gives them hope of contending in the AFC playoff race if their red zone issues can be addressed effectively on offense.
They make a compelling case. The 49ers had scored 30 or more points in eight consecutive games and were second-highest scoring team (33.4). San Francisco averaged 402.6 yards of offense but gained 215 on Sunday; San Francisco has no apparent weaknesses either in terms of strength or weaknesses at every level on offense; by contrast, Cleveland’s defense, which already ranked No. 1 in efficiency coming into this weekend, has proven capable of playing Super Bowl-caliber defense and they proved it on Sunday.
