The National Football League is no stranger to controversy, scandal, and felonious accusations. After all, shepherding such a vast group of individuals from diverse backgrounds is fairly impossible.
The league has weathered some significant storms in its105 years. A deep dive into NFL history is unnecessary to uncover a number of events ranging from unfortunate to ugly lurking beneath the veneer of propriety.
Prominent Legal Cases Against NFL Players
Putting aside controversial decisions, inappropriate comments, and inexplicable actions, the NFL has also seen behavior that carried serious legal consequences. For example,
Ray Lewis– Baltimore Ravens: Charged in a double homicide in 2000. Lewis testified that two of his associates committed the murder, resulting in their convictions. Lewis pled guilty to obstruction of justice and received no jail time.
Michael Vick- Atlanta Falcons: In 2007, Vick entered a guilty plea for criminal conspiracy to operate an interstate dog fighting ring. He served 21 months in federal prison and received an indefinite suspension from the NFL. He returned to football in 2009.
Ray Rice- Baltimore Ravens: The running back was indicted in 2014 for third-degree aggravated assault after security footage showed Rice striking his fiancée, Janay Palmer, and then dragging her unconscious body from their elevator. He entered a pre-trial diversion program to avoid jail. However, the Ravens released him, and the NFL suspended Rice indefinitely.
Aaron Hernandez- New England Patriots: In 2013, he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of Odin Lloyd. Hernandez was also implicated in two other murder cases.
Henry Ruggs III- Las Vegas Raiders: In 2023, Ruggs pleaded guilty to a DUI felony after causing a fiery car crash that killed 23-year-old Tina Tintor. Reports say that at the time of the accident, he was intoxicated and driving in excess of 156 mph. Ruggs was sentenced to at least three years in prison.
These five examples of criminal conduct highlight the persistent lack of judgment among NFL players. These serve as reminders of how important accountability should be in the NFL.
While players’ actions draw attention, the league also faces significant issues related to its owners’ associations.
Potential Problems for Prominent NFL Owners
The United States Department of Justice recently released over three million pages of formerly classified information regarding the far-reaching case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Several NFL owners are mentioned in the documents, which name the many wealthy and powerful individuals who appear in the 3 million-plus pages. The report tells a vile story of sinister behavior of an unimaginable scope. Which owners are implicated, and what do we know about their links to the now deceased purveyor of debauchery? These questions demand some answers.
Steve Tisch (New York Giants Co-owner): While his name appears over 400 times in the Epstein files, Tisch contends that his emails involved conversations about movies, philanthropy, and adult women. Tisch also stresses that he never visited Epstein’s private island, which was the scene of numerous sexual assaults on children.
Robert Kraft (New England Patriots Owner): Mentioned in the files, which noted his 2019 legal team. Emails exchanged discuss Kraft’s need for a “local palm rep.”
Josh Harris (Washington Commanders Co-owner): According to emails, Harris tried to keep Epstein at arm’s length. He did not have a friendship with Epstein.
Woody Johnson (New York Jets Owner): The files point to an association between Johnson and Epstein, who shared several acquaintances. Nothing substantial links Johnson to involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking organization.
Stephen Ross (Miami Dolphins Owner): Ross and Epstein appear connected via a mutual associate, Andrew Farkas. They do not appear to have a friendship, but Epstein is reminded in an email to attend Ross’ New Year’s Eve party in 2016.
Mark Wilf (Minnesota Vikings Co-owner): The files mention Wilf and Epstein connecting because Wilf wanted to purchase Epstein’s home in Paris.
Arthur Blank (Atlanta Falcons Owner): Blank appears in the files in connection with a 2011 benefit gala.
In the interest of fairness, it must be understood that a person whose name appears in the Epstein files should not immediately bear the weight of guilt either by commission or association. Some of the
NFL owners
whose names are in the documents have a passing knowledge of Epstein and are clearly not a part of his inner circle.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell affirmed that all the facts related to this situation would be fully investigated before any disciplinary action is considered. As more information comes to light, we could see some owners fully exonerated while others are found culpable. The Epstein sex-trafficking ring is already toppling notable people around the world. We should expect many more shockwaves shaking apart familiar people and institutions before this is over.
