The stage is set for Super Bowl 60, and the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots are busily packing their bags for the big game. The teams are hardly strangers. Besides numerous regular-season games over the years, this year’s matchup will be a redux of Super Bowl XLIX (played on February 1, 2015), where New England defeated Seattle 28-24.
Another NFL contest will be grabbing fans’ attention several days prior to the big game, the NFL Pro Bowl. The 2026 Pro Bowl, now branded as the Pro Bowl Games, becomes the first to be integrated into Super Bowl Week festivities and will feature events starting on Sunday, February 1st. The AFC-NFC flag football game will be played on Tuesday, February 3rd. Other activities will take part in include,
* Tug-of-War
* Dodgeball
* Quarterback Accuracy
* Punter Accuracy
* Relay Race/ Obstacle Course
* Helmet Harmony is a trivia game testing players’ knowledge of their teammates.
All this AND flag football too! It seems fair to imagine that the spirits of George Hallis, Paul Brown, and John Madden will get together and clobber the person (or persons) responsible for this event.
The league advertises this as an “AFC-NFC showdown.” The ad neglects to mention which events will be the most exciting. It’s tough to top a good trivia game, but dodgeball may be able to do it.
Moments like these make some fans long for the “good old days” when the contest was in its prime. Perhaps a short stroll down memory lane can ease the angst.
* 1939- 1942: The first “Pro All-Star Game” took place on January 15, 1939, at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. The format was simple. The league champions would face a team composed of all-star players. The contest was stopped after five seasons due to WWII.
* 1951-1972: The game was rebranded as “The NFL Pro Bowl,” and the next 21 games were held in Los Angeles. The format changed, and the teams were collections of the best players from the American Conference versus those from the National Conference. The week after the Super Bowl was designated for the Pro Bowl.
* 1972-1980: The format and date remained the same, but the location varied.
* 1980-2009: The Pro Bowl relocated to Aloha Stadium in Hawaii. Players enjoyed the trip to the islands, and the game began to take on a more relaxed tone.
* 2010: The contest would no longer be played after the Super Bowl but would take place the week before the big game. Additionally, the game moved from Hawaii to the Super Bowl venue. In this case, Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.
* 2011-2013: The Pro Bowl returned to Hawaii and maintained the same AFC-NFC format. However, the contest was widely criticized for a lack of player intensity.
* 2014: The Pro Bowl underwent significant changes. The AFC-NFC format was dropped. In its place, teams were chosen schoolyard-style by Hall of Fame team captains. In 2014, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders were each in charge of a team.
* 2014-2016: The team captain format continued even as the fan interest dwindled.
* 2017- 2022: The NFL flipped back to the AFC-NFC format and also added what they called “Pro Bowl Skills Showdown.” These featured activities included accuracy contests and dodgeball.
* 2023-2025: The era of “The Pro Bowl Games” maintained the AFC-NFC format, but players would compete in various contests as teams, scoring points. The winning team would be determined by these points, along with points scored during a final flag football game.
* 2026: This is the first season a Pro Bowl contest will take place during the Super Bowl week festivities.
The NFL has shown a willingness to try to mix up a formula to increase the interest and entertainment value of its contests. Although walking the competition back so far from the original sport could turn NFL fans away. It remains to be seen, but that trivia game better be killer.
