In one of the boldest trades of the 2025 NFL offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins have completed a blockbuster deal that sees elite defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick swap teams, with tight end Jonnu Smith also changing addresses. The trade has sent shockwaves through the NFL landscape as both franchises look to reshape their rosters for immediate and long-term success.
Pittsburgh Steelers Receive:
CB Jalen Ramsey
TE Jonnu Smith
2027 7th-round pick
Miami Dolphins Receive:
S Minkah Fitzpatrick
2027 5th-round pick
With the recent addition of Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf, the Steelers are clearly going “all-in” for a Super Bowl in 2025. Adding Jalen Ramsey, a seven-time Pro Bowler and one of the most feared corners in the league, only further solidifies that commitment. Despite missing most of 2024 with injury, Ramsey’s return late in the year showed he still has the elite coverage skills and leadership that made him a champion with the Rams.
Head Coach Mike Tomlin and GM Omar Khan are gambling on star power and experience, and this trade reflects that philosophy.
Tight end Jonnu Smith is a sneaky good addition. Coming off a career year with 884 yards and 8 TDs in Atlanta under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith—who is now with the Steelers—Smith brings an explosive dimension to the offense. He reunites with his former play-caller in a system that should maximize his athleticism.
However, the cost is significant: Minkah Fitzpatrick, one of the league’s best safeties, departs after five elite seasons in Pittsburgh. The Steelers will need to replace his ball-hawking presence on the back end, potentially with a committee approach or a future signing.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, get a reunion with Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was originally drafted by Miami in 2018. His exit after clashing with then-head coach Brian Flores now feels like ancient history. In his return, Fitzpatrick brings not only elite playmaking but a new level of football maturity and leadership.
For Miami, this move was largely about salary cap management. Jalen Ramsey was set to count over $26 million against the cap. Trading him creates significant room following Tua Tagovailoa’s massive extension. Jonnu Smith, while productive, was also expendable given Miami’s system and cap situation.
This trade allows new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver to build around Fitzpatrick in a two-safety-heavy system, while the team uses its financial flexibility to plug holes at tight end and cornerback elsewhere.
Steelers: B+ A win-now move that gives Pittsburgh the top-tier CB it craved, but sacrificing Fitzpatrick could create problems against elite passing teams. Still, if Ramsey returns to form and Jonnu thrives in Arthur Smith’s scheme, this could be a home run.
Dolphins: A– Miami sells high on Ramsey and gets younger and cheaper at a key position while gaining a fifth-rounder in the deal. They avoid locker room unrest with two players who didn’t seem to fit long-term plans and regain an elite safety in the process.
This trade will be judged largely on results in the upcoming season. If the Steelers make a deep playoff run—or even win the Super Bowl—Ramsey’s big price tag will be worth every penny. If not, they may face a future without Fitzpatrick and limited picks.
For the Dolphins, the move represents a smart pivot toward sustainable roster building. Fitzpatrick is under contract through 2026 and fits their defensive identity perfectly. The cap space saved may soon be used to bolster other weak spots ahead of training camp.
This deal is a rare example of a trade that helps both teams, but in very different ways. The Steelers are swinging for the fences, stacking stars in pursuit of one more ring for Aaron Rodgers. The Dolphins are playing the long game, reshuffling talent to create financial and schematic balance.
As training camp nears, all eyes will be on how Ramsey adjusts to the Steelers’ defense—and how Fitzpatrick reclaims his spot as the heart of Miami’s secondary.
