Kirk Cousins Has Turned the Raiders Into the NFL’s Most Shocking Contender

Three weeks ago, the Las Vegas Raiders were viewed as an interesting experiment.

They had a new quarterback, a first-year head coach and enough individual talent to create problems for opponents. They also had an aging Kirk Cousins attempting to prove he could still lead a competitive team.

Nobody knew whether the pieces would fit.

Three games later, the Raiders are undefeated—and it is becoming impossible to dismiss them.

Las Vegas improved to 3–0 by rallying past the New Orleans Saints 35–27 at Caesars Superdome. Cousins threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, while the Raiders scored the final 13 points after trailing 27–22 entering the fourth quarter.

The victory was not perfect. Las Vegas trailed during the second half, struggled to contain New Orleans’ offense for extended stretches and needed its defense to create four late turnovers.

That is exactly why the result matters.

The Raiders did not win because everything went according to plan. They won because they responded when the game became difficult.

That is what contenders do.

The Raiders Have Passed Every Early Test

Las Vegas’ 3–0 record is not the product of one dominant performance or a soft opening schedule.

The Raiders have demonstrated something different each week.

Cousins immediately provided stability during his debut, throwing three touchdown passes in a 27–13 victory over Miami. Las Vegas then went on the road and defeated the Chargers 26–14, with the defense creating the decisive turnover during the fourth quarter.

The Raiders faced their most difficult situation Sunday in New Orleans.

The Saints entered the game undefeated, possessed home-field advantage and carried a 27–22 lead into the fourth quarter. Las Vegas could have accepted the loss and still described its 2–1 start as encouraging.

Instead, the Raiders took control.

Their offense produced the points required to move ahead, while the defense repeatedly punished New Orleans’ mistakes. Las Vegas finished the game with 13 unanswered points and left the Superdome as one of the NFL’s remaining undefeated teams.

The Raiders have now won in different environments, against different styles and through different forms of adversity.

That makes their record much more meaningful.

Kirk Cousins Was Exactly What Las Vegas Needed

The Raiders did not need Cousins to become the most physically gifted quarterback in football.

They needed him to become the adult in the room.

Las Vegas possessed several talented offensive players before Cousins arrived, but the organization lacked stability at the sport’s most important position. Inconsistent quarterback play prevented the Raiders from developing a reliable identity or sustaining momentum.

Cousins has changed that immediately.

He understands where the football should go, recognizes pressure and gives his receivers opportunities to make plays. More importantly, he does not allow a bad series or temporary deficit to completely disrupt the offense.

That composure was essential against New Orleans.

The Saints kept scoring and eventually moved ahead during the third quarter. Cousins did not begin forcing throws or abandoning the structure of the offense. He remained patient and continued attacking the matchups Las Vegas believed it could exploit.

His fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Brock Bowers completed the comeback and gave the Raiders the separation they needed.

Cousins has thrown three touchdown passes in each of his first three games with Las Vegas. That level of consistency has transformed the offense from a collection of talented pieces into a legitimate unit.

The Raiders finally have a quarterback they trust.

This Is Not Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins

Cousins’ critics will inevitably point toward his history.

He has produced strong regular-season numbers before. He has led teams to winning records and generated plenty of excitement during September. His career has also been defined by questions about postseason performance and production in nationally televised games.

Those concerns have not completely disappeared.

The difference is that Las Vegas is not asking Cousins to carry an incomplete roster by himself.

The Raiders possess a running back capable of influencing the game, one of the league’s most dangerous tight ends and a defense built around an elite pass rusher. Cousins can operate within the offense instead of attempting to rescue it.

He also appears comfortable under Klint Kubiak.

The system emphasizes play-action, defined reads and opportunities for Cousins to deliver the football on time. It does not require him to constantly improvise or create outside the structure of the play.

Cousins is succeeding because the Raiders built an offense that fits him.

That may not eliminate every long-term question, but it has produced three victories in three weeks.

Ashton Jeanty Changes the Entire Offense

Cousins receives most of the attention, but Ashton Jeanty’s presence creates many of the opportunities that make the passing game work.

Defenses must respect his ability to run through contact, make defenders miss and turn a small crease into an explosive play. That attention creates favorable situations for Cousins, Bowers and the rest of Las Vegas’ receiving options.

Jeanty is also dangerous as a receiver.

Cousins connected with him for two touchdowns during the season opener, demonstrating that Las Vegas can move him around the formation and create mismatches against linebackers.

The Raiders do not need Jeanty to rush for 150 yards every week. His value extends beyond the traditional box score. The threat of the running game influences defensive alignments and makes the play-action passing game considerably more effective.

That balance has been missing from several of Cousins’ previous offenses.

Las Vegas can run when opponents use lighter defensive formations and throw when safeties move toward the line of scrimmage. The quarterback is no longer being asked to defeat defenses that know exactly what is coming.

Jeanty makes the entire operation more difficult to defend.

Brock Bowers Is Becoming Cousins’ Most Important Target

Bowers gives Cousins something every veteran quarterback wants: a reliable option in the middle of the field.

He can create separation against linebackers, overpower smaller defensive backs and remain on the field in almost every personnel grouping. His versatility prevents opponents from easily identifying whether Las Vegas intends to run or pass.

That became important during the comeback in New Orleans.

The Raiders needed a player who could find space when the Saints tightened their coverage and attempted to protect the lead. Bowers delivered, catching the touchdown that helped Las Vegas complete its fourth-quarter surge.

His presence also creates opportunities for other receivers.

When defenses dedicate additional attention to Bowers, the Raiders can attack isolated matchups outside. When they refuse to adjust, Cousins can continue feeding one of the league’s most difficult tight ends to cover.

Cousins built some of his best Minnesota offenses around tight ends who could work between the numbers. Bowers is more explosive than almost any player he has previously had at that position.

Their partnership could become one of the NFL’s most productive.

The Defense Has Developed a Winning Habit

Las Vegas’ defense did not dominate the Saints from beginning to end.

New Orleans scored 27 points and controlled much of the third quarter. The Saints carried a five-point advantage into the final period and appeared capable of handing the Raiders their first loss.

Then the game changed.

The Las Vegas defense forced four late turnovers and prevented New Orleans from scoring again.

That pattern has become one of the defining characteristics of the Raiders’ season.

The defense does not need to produce perfect statistical performances. It needs to create decisive plays when the outcome remains uncertain. Las Vegas forced a critical late turnover against the Chargers and then produced an entire fourth quarter of disruptive football against the Saints.

Maxx Crosby remains the centerpiece.

His pressure affects everything an opposing offense attempts to accomplish. Quarterbacks must identify his location before every snap, offensive lines must dedicate additional protection toward him, and play-callers must account for the possibility that Crosby will destroy a play before it develops.

That attention creates opportunities for everyone around him.

A defense capable of forcing turnovers and generating pressure without constant blitzing will travel well. That becomes increasingly important as the Raiders move into the difficult portion of their schedule.

Klint Kubiak Deserves More Credit

Kubiak inherited a franchise accustomed to instability.

The Raiders had cycled through coaches, quarterbacks and offensive systems without establishing a sustainable direction. Kubiak needed to create immediate belief while implementing a structure capable of lasting beyond an early winning streak.

Through three games, he has accomplished both.

The Raiders play with organization and confidence. They do not appear confused when opponents adjust, and they have responded to adversity without abandoning their identity.

That reflects coaching.

Kubiak also deserves credit for constructing the offense around the personnel available to him. He has not asked Cousins to become a different quarterback or Jeanty to operate in a one-dimensional role. He has found ways to involve Bowers while maintaining offensive balance.

The result is a team that looks considerably more connected than it did during recent seasons.

Las Vegas is not winning through unsustainable tricks. The Raiders are running a recognizable system and trusting their best players to execute it.

The AFC West Just Became Much More Complicated

The Raiders’ success changes the entire AFC West race.

Kansas City remains the standard and has also started 3–0. Denver improved to 2–1 by completing a dramatic comeback against the Rams. The Chargers possess talent despite their early struggles.

Las Vegas cannot assume that three victories will create lasting separation.

However, the Raiders have already done enough to make the division more competitive than expected.

Their victory over the Chargers gives them an early divisional advantage. More importantly, Cousins provides the kind of experienced quarterback play necessary to compete against Patrick Mahomes and Bo Nix.

The Raiders may not possess Kansas City’s championship history, but they no longer appear to be waiting for the future.

They are capable of challenging the Chiefs now.

The head-to-head meetings will eventually decide whether Las Vegas can win the division. Until then, the Raiders need to continue collecting victories against the rest of the schedule.

Their margin for error will remain small.

Are the Raiders Genuine Super Bowl Contenders?

Three games are not enough to answer every question.

Las Vegas has not faced Kansas City, Buffalo or Baltimore. Cousins must still demonstrate that he can maintain this level of play once defenses accumulate more film on Kubiak’s offense.

The Raiders also cannot depend on forcing four fourth-quarter turnovers every week. Eventually, they will need to protect a lead without requiring a dramatic defensive rescue.

Those are legitimate concerns.

They are not reasons to dismiss what Las Vegas has accomplished.

The Raiders are undefeated, balanced and capable of winning close games. They have a veteran quarterback, an explosive young running back, an elite tight end and one of the NFL’s premier defensive players.

That is a legitimate contender’s foundation.

Las Vegas does not need to be declared the Super Bowl favorite. The Raiders simply deserve to be included in the conversation.

The Raiders Have Become Impossible to Ignore

The most encouraging part of Las Vegas’ start is that the team has not reached its ceiling.

Cousins is still developing timing with his receivers. Jeanty is only beginning to demonstrate how many different ways he can influence games. Kubiak will continue expanding the offense as his players become more comfortable.

The defense also has room to improve before the fourth quarter. Reducing explosive plays and creating more favorable third-down situations would prevent opponents from building leads like the one New Orleans held Sunday.

Las Vegas is undefeated despite those imperfections.

That should concern the rest of the AFC.

The Raiders have already demonstrated that they can control a game, win on the road and complete a fourth-quarter comeback. They have responded every time an opponent has applied pressure.

Most importantly, they believe Cousins will provide the correct answer when the game becomes difficult.

The Raiders began the season as an intriguing story.

At 3–0, they are something much more significant.

They are a contender—and nobody can dismiss them anymore.
