The New York Jets will replace the injured Mike White with Joe Flacco in Sunday’s season finale against the Miami Dolphins.
After a 23-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last week and a five-game losing streak in the season, White’s rib injury forced the Jets to replace him with Delaware’s veteran quarterback.
Former second choice of the team Zach Wilson will play as Flacco’s backup for the final game. Wilson’s performance and other injuries also contributed to the Jets’ decision.
Flacco has a long history with the Jets, dating back nearly half a decade. This finale will mark his fourth start of the season. He had started three previous games, after replacing Wilson.
Wilson sustained injuries from games, including a meniscus injury and a bruised bone from the preseason opener. There were inconsistencies in his performance under pressure.
White eventually took Wilson’s place after Week 12, only to be substituted due to his own injuries.
Mike White will also be out.”
Robert Saleh, New York Jets’ head coach
The Jets made the difficult decision after taking players’ performances into account. White suffered too much on the field, and Wilson’s injuries were hurting his play on the field.
The Jets head into the season finale without three of their best offensive line starters, such as tackles George Fant, Duane Brown, and right guard Nate Herbig.
Some fans have mentioned Chris Streveler as a potential quarterback. Streveler replaced Wilson in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ game, resulting in a solid offense.
The Jets may be planning a different approach or path for him and waiting for Flacco’s own play in the coming week.
“Flacco gives us the best chance to win,” said Jets coach Robert Saleh when asked about Streveler.
This season has seen a five-game losing streak for the Jets.
The upcoming game against the Dolphins will decide whether Flacco is the right choice to break it, or if the Jets will have to reevaluate their strategy.
