Betting Line: Panthers -1.5

Over/Under: 35.5 Points

The NFL returns under the lights in Canton as the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals officially open the 2026 preseason in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. Although the final score will not count toward the regular-season standings, Thursday night represents a major opportunity for rookies, backup quarterbacks, roster-bubble players and new coaching staffs to make an immediate impression on a national stage.

The matchup also carries special historical significance. Panthers legend Luke Kuechly and Cardinals icon Larry Fitzgerald are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 and will be recognized during the festivities in Canton. They will enter the Hall alongside Drew Brees, Roger Craig and Adam Vinatieri. Arizona has been designated as the home team for the neutral-site matchup.

Carolina enters the preseason following an encouraging 2025 campaign in which Dave Canales led the Panthers to an 8-9 record, the NFC South championship and a home playoff appearance. However, Canales will take a cautious approach in Canton. Bryce Young and most of Carolina’s established starters are not expected to play because the Hall of Fame Game gives the Panthers an additional fourth preseason contest.

Instead, veteran quarterback Kenny Pickett will start and is expected to handle a few series before undrafted rookie Haynes King takes over for most of the remaining action. That rotation gives Carolina an intriguing combination of experience and athletic upside. Pickett is attempting to establish himself as a dependable backup behind Young, while King receives his first opportunity to prove that his dual-threat college production can translate to the NFL.

Arizona begins a new era under first-year head coach Mike LaFleur, who will use the extra preseason game to evaluate his offensive system and the depth of a rebuilding roster. Rookie quarterback Carson Beck will receive the start after being selected in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Veterans Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II are considered unlikely to play, potentially giving Beck an extended opportunity to operate the offense.

Beck brings considerable experience after six seasons of college football and 43 collegiate starts. Arizona’s coaches will be evaluating more than his passing statistics. They want to see Beck communicate the play, organize the offense, make the proper reads and avoid negative decisions. His performance will provide the first public look at how quickly he is adapting to LaFleur’s system.

The Cardinals could also provide an early glimpse of rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, the third overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. Love has expressed a strong desire to participate in the Hall of Fame Game, although LaFleur had not officially confirmed his status. His speed, open-field elusiveness and ability to create explosive plays would immediately give Arizona’s offense another dimension if he receives meaningful snaps.

From a betting perspective, Carolina enters as a narrow 1.5-point favorite. The small spread reflects the unpredictable nature of preseason football, where playing time, roster depth and fourth-quarter execution often matter more than regular-season talent.

Carolina’s advantage begins with its quarterback rotation. Pickett brings significantly more NFL experience than Beck, while King’s rushing ability could become especially dangerous against Arizona’s third-team defense during the second half. The Cardinals, however, could have an advantage if Beck receives more playing time than expected and settles into an early rhythm.

The low total of 35.5 points suggests oddsmakers expect a traditional preseason game filled with conservative play-calling, rotating offensive linemen, penalties and unfinished drives. Both teams will prioritize player evaluation over aggressive fourth-down decisions, making touchdowns difficult to produce consistently.

Beck is the most likely quarterback in this matchup to receive an extended evaluation period. With Brissett and Minshew unlikely to play, Arizona could give its rookie starter multiple quarters to manage the offense.

The Cardinals do not need Beck to dominate. They need him to complete short throws, stay ahead of the chains and demonstrate command of the system. A collection of screens, checkdowns and play-action completions could allow him to surpass this number without needing several explosive passes.

Prop Bet #2: Haynes King Over 24.5 Rushing Yards

King could become one of the most entertaining players in the game once he takes over for Pickett. The former Georgia Tech quarterback produced 953 rushing yards during his final college season and possesses the athleticism to escape pressure, extend plays and create yards on designed quarterback runs.

Preseason offensive lines frequently struggle with communication after substitutions begin. That could force King out of the pocket, where his natural running ability becomes an advantage. If he plays most of the second half as expected, he should receive enough opportunities to challenge this total.

Pickett is only expected to play a few series, but Carolina should give him enough opportunities to operate the complete offense. As the experienced quarterback in the matchup, Pickett should be comfortable identifying Arizona’s coverage and delivering the ball underneath.

The key will be Carolina’s opening drives. If Pickett completes several rhythm passes and produces one explosive play, he could surpass 49.5 yards before leaving the game. His experience should also help Carolina avoid the early procedural mistakes that frequently affect preseason offenses.

The Hall of Fame Game traditionally emphasizes player evaluation rather than offensive creativity. Neither team has a reason to reveal major portions of its regular-season playbook, and Carolina has already indicated that most of its starters will not participate.

Arizona will be installing a new offense under LaFleur, while Beck will be making his first NFL appearance. Carolina will eventually turn the game over to an undrafted rookie quarterback working with reserve linemen and receivers. Those circumstances create the potential for sacks, penalties, turnovers and field-goal attempts instead of sustained touchdown drives.

The Matchup Context: Opportunity in Canton

Carolina’s objective will be to establish an organized offense under Pickett, evaluate King’s development and identify which young skill-position players can contribute behind the established starters.

Running back Jonathon Brooks, rookie returner Trevor Etienne, wide receivers Brycen Tremayne and Ja’seem Reed and tight end Mitchell Evans are among the depth players who could receive increased opportunities. Etienne is also listed as Carolina’s primary kickoff and punt returner, making special teams an important part of his evaluation.

Defensively, the Panthers will examine several players competing for rotational assignments. With most starters resting, Carolina’s reserve front seven must maintain gap discipline against an Arizona offense that could lean heavily on its running backs and short passing game.

Arizona’s priority will be establishing a clean operation in LaFleur’s first game as head coach. Beck must handle the huddle, communicate protections and make responsible decisions. The Cardinals will also use the game to evaluate the offensive line protecting their rookie quarterback and a collection of young receivers competing for roster positions.

The fourth quarter could ultimately decide the outcome. By that point, both teams will be using players fighting for the final positions on the active roster or practice squad. Tackling, special teams coverage, penalties and turnovers will likely matter more than complicated offensive strategy.

Players to Watch

Kenny Pickett, Quarterback, Panthers: The experienced backup receives the first opportunity to lead Carolina’s offense. Pickett must operate efficiently and demonstrate that the Panthers can trust him if Young becomes unavailable during the regular season.

Haynes King, Quarterback, Panthers: King’s mobility gives Carolina a different offensive dimension. His ability to create outside the designed structure could become one of the game’s biggest factors during the second half.

Carson Beck, Quarterback, Cardinals: All eyes will be on Arizona’s rookie starter. Beck’s composure, decision-making and command of the offense will be more important than producing a perfect statistical performance.

Jeremiyah Love, Running Back, Cardinals: Love would be one of the most talented players on the field if Arizona allows him to participate. His acceleration and ability to turn a small opening into an explosive gain make every touch significant.

Trevor Etienne, Running Back/Returner, Panthers: Etienne can improve his roster position through offense and special teams. A long return or explosive run would make him one of the night’s biggest standouts.

Brycen Tremayne, Wide Receiver, Panthers: With Carolina resting its leading receivers, Tremayne should receive additional targets. His size and ability to make contested catches could help Pickett and King convert important third downs.

Keys to the Game

Carolina Panthers

Carolina must protect the football, give Pickett clean opening possessions and allow King to use his athleticism without placing him in unnecessary danger.

The Panthers also need their reserve offensive line to handle Arizona’s pressure packages. Preseason games frequently become difficult for quarterbacks once substitutions begin, making communication and assignment discipline essential.

Defensively, Carolina must prevent Beck from becoming comfortable. Creating pressure without relying on complicated blitzes would force the rookie quarterback to speed up his reads and test his ability to respond to NFL-level pursuit.

Arizona Cardinals

Arizona must create manageable situations for Beck. The Cardinals can accomplish that by establishing the running game, utilizing play-action passes and giving their rookie quarterback several easy completions early.

The Cardinals must also contain King during the second half. Defensive linemen cannot rush too aggressively and create open scrambling lanes. Arizona’s linebackers will need to maintain discipline when King uses read-option concepts or escapes the pocket.

Special teams could become Arizona’s path to an upset. A long return, blocked kick or turnover inside Carolina territory could decide a game expected to feature limited scoring.

The Verdict

Prediction: Panthers 20, Cardinals 13

Pick: Panthers -1.5 and Under 35.5

Arizona’s new era will generate excitement, and Beck should deliver several encouraging moments during his NFL debut. However, the Cardinals will be operating a new system with a rookie quarterback and a heavily rotated lineup.

Carolina possesses the more favorable quarterback combination for this type of preseason matchup. Pickett’s experience should help the Panthers establish an early lead, while King’s mobility will create problems for Arizona’s reserve defenders during the second half.

Expect a competitive but uneven contest featuring defensive stops, penalties and several promising individual performances. Carolina’s quarterback depth and late-game rushing ability should ultimately make the difference, allowing the Panthers to cover the narrow spread while the total remains under 35.5 points.
