In 2016, Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta arrived in Cleveland with his spreadsheets, buzzwords, and the ambition to transform the NFL. To do so, he would rely not only on his Harvard education but also on a concept used in the front offices of Major League Baseball teams. Sabermetrics relies on stats and analysis to drive team decision-making.
Time has nearly jumped a decade; has anything changed? Except for a few playoff appearances, not really. The Browns are still in the hunt for a quarterback, still enduring crushing defeats, and still at a loss to explain the purpose of the man known as the Chief Strategy Officer. Typically, DePodesta would materialize from La Jolla, California, solely to mumble analytics into team owner Jimmy Haslam’s ear.
His undefined role earned DePodesta the nickname the Boogeyman. Cleveland fans struggled to understand his purpose. He wasn’t scouting players, he wasn’t coaching, and he wasn’t even living in Cleveland. Browns’ General Manager Andrew Berry called DePodesta a “thought partner,” which didn’t clarify his role within the organization.
What Paul DePodesta Accomplished in Cleveland.
If we are being fair, DePodesta had influence in Cleveland, and the remarkable lack of transparency limits the view of any legacy. There are a few undeniable products from his tenure.
Top Criticisms:
The Company You Keep:
Despite some positives during his time in Cleveland, Depodesta is linked to some less-than-stellar personnel, including,
Former Head Coach Hue Jackson
Former Head Coach Feddie Kitchens
Deshaun Watson- a 230-million-dollar fumble, which is still haunting the team.
Analytics Surpassing Football:
The potential positive impact of DePodesta’s showy Ivy League strategies was never fully realized. In some ways, it felt out of place in the hard-nosed, blue-collar landscape of the AFC North. Because his impact was difficult to identify, it was also challenging to measure DePodesta’s successes.
Quarterback Failures:
Above all else, DePodesta never produced the most vital piece of the Cleveland Browns puzzle. A franchise quarterback who was able to carry the hopes and dreams of players, coaches, and fans to a Super Bowl.
Are the Browns Better Off Without DePodesta?
Now that our Chief Strategy Officer has made his exit, will the team (and its loyal fans) be in a better position? That’s a tricky question to answer. Clearly, there are no Lombardi Trophies in the near future. There will be some simplicity and clear accountability without the mysterious strategy guy hovering around. The writing is on the wall for another rebuild, and speculation about Stefanski and Berry’s job security is running high. Looking at the past to predict the future, DePodesta would not create any remarkable changes anytime soon.
At best, DePodesta was a handy scapegoat for the fans of a team that pushed loyalty and endurance to the limits. As he returns to baseball, Browns fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief; the elusive Boogeyman has moved along.
