8 NFL Head Coaches on the Hot Seat Entering the 2026 Season

The NFL is a results-driven league where patience disappears quickly, and several head coaches will enter the 2026 season knowing their jobs are on the line. Some are trying to end lengthy playoff droughts, while others must prove they can maximize championship-caliber rosters and franchise quarterbacks. From Aaron Glenn attempting to recover from a disastrous debut with the New York Jets to Zac Taylor trying to stop the Bengals from wasting Joe Burrow’s prime, these eight coaches cannot afford another disappointing season. Here are the NFL head coaches facing the most pressure entering 2026.

8. Dave Canales, Carolina Panthers

Dave Canales helped Carolina improve enough to win the NFC South in 2025, but the Panthers reached the playoffs with an 8-9 record after benefiting from a three-team tiebreaker. That accomplishment bought Canales additional time, although it did not prove that Carolina has become a consistent winner.

The most important question remains Bryce Young. Canales was hired largely because of his reputation for developing quarterbacks, and Young’s future in Carolina will be tied directly to his coach. If the offense stagnates or Young regresses, ownership could conclude that another system is necessary.

Panthers owner David Tepper has demonstrated that he is willing to make coaching changes quickly. Canales must show that last season’s division championship represented genuine improvement rather than a fortunate finish in the NFL’s weakest division. A five- or six-win season would place him in danger, especially if Carolina falls behind the rest of the NFC South.

7. Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas Cowboys

Brian Schottenheimer is entering only his second season as the Cowboys’ head coach, but patience has never been one of Jerry Jones’ defining qualities. Schottenheimer was not considered an inspiring choice when Dallas promoted him, and he must prove the organization made the correct decision.

He inherited a franchise with enormous expectations, a highly paid quarterback in Dak Prescott and a fan base tired of postseason disappointment. Another year of injuries, defensive problems and offensive inconsistency will not be easily dismissed.

Schottenheimer’s greatest challenge is establishing his own identity after spending years as an NFL assistant. If the Cowboys start poorly or fall out of playoff contention, speculation about his replacement will become overwhelming. Jones could also be tempted by a more accomplished candidate following the season. Schottenheimer may not need a deep playoff run to survive, but he probably needs a winning record and clear evidence that Dallas is moving forward.

6. Dan Quinn, Washington Commanders

Dan Quinn appeared to be one of the NFL’s best coaching hires after Washington went 12-5 and reached the NFC Championship Game in 2024. The Commanders then crashed to 5-12 in 2025 while Jayden Daniels missed ten games with injuries.

Daniels’ absence provided Quinn with a legitimate explanation, but it did not excuse Washington’s disastrous defense. The Commanders allowed 384 yards per game, finished with only ten takeaways and ranked last in total defense. That is particularly damaging for a coach whose expertise is supposed to be defense.

Washington responded by adding Odafe Oweh, Sonny Styles, Leo Chenal and Nick Cross. The front office has given Quinn a substantially reworked unit, leaving him responsible for producing results.

If Daniels remains healthy and Washington still finishes below .500, Quinn will have difficulty defending his position. The remarkable 2024 run bought him time, but another collapse could convince the organization that a change is necessary.

5. Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles

It seems almost unbelievable that a coach who won the Super Bowl following the 2024 season could be in danger two years later. Philadelphia, however, is not a patient organization when it believes its championship window is being wasted.

The Eagles struggled offensively in 2025, endured public tension involving important players and were eliminated in their opening playoff game. Offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo departed, while star receiver A.J. Brown was traded to New England. Those developments intensified questions about Sirianni’s control of the offense and locker room.

Sirianni has an outstanding overall record, but Philadelphia’s talented roster creates championship expectations. Simply reaching the playoffs may not be enough if the offense remains dysfunctional or internal problems continue.

The Eagles fired Doug Pederson only three seasons after he won the franchise’s first Super Bowl. If Philadelphia badly underachieves in 2026, Sirianni’s championship will not guarantee his survival.

4. Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals

No NFL organization has wasted more elite offensive performances over the last three seasons than the Cincinnati Bengals. Cincinnati has not reached the playoffs since 2022 despite possessing Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase in their primes.

The Bengals finished 6-11 in 2025 after Burrow missed nine games, but injuries cannot completely excuse the collapse. Cincinnati ranked near the bottom of the league in scoring defense, total defense and yards allowed per play. The Bengals also became the first team in NFL history to surrender at least 27 points and 350 yards in eight consecutive games.

Cincinnati aggressively upgraded its defense by acquiring Dexter Lawrence and adding Jonathan Allen, Boye Mafe, Bryan Cook, Cashius Howell and Tacario Davis. Taylor can no longer argue that the roster lacks sufficient defensive talent.

Owner Mike Brown is famously patient, but missing the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season—especially with three new head coaches in the AFC North—should force Cincinnati to consider making a change.

3. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Todd Bowles won three consecutive NFC South championships before Tampa Bay slipped to 8-9 and missed the playoffs in 2025. The Buccaneers started 6-2 but collapsed by losing seven of their final nine games.

Bowles is 35-33 through four seasons in Tampa Bay with only one playoff victory. More concerning is the performance of his defense. Despite Bowles’ reputation as an elite defensive coach, the Buccaneers have not finished in the NFL’s top half in total defense since the Tom Brady era.

The roster is also undergoing a transition. Mike Evans departed, Lavonte David retired and Baker Mayfield is entering a critical contract season. Tampa Bay may still possess the NFC South’s most talented roster, making another losing season difficult to justify.

Bowles is under contract through 2028, but that will not necessarily save him. If Tampa Bay fails to win a vulnerable division for the second consecutive year, the Buccaneers could pursue a new direction.

2. Shane Steichen, Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have already established the expectations for Shane Steichen: win and reach the postseason. Indianapolis ownership retained Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard after 2025 but declared that the urgency to produce results had “never been higher.”

Steichen owns a 25-26 record through three seasons without a playoff appearance. Indianapolis appeared ready to end that drought after beginning 2025 with an 8-2 record, but injuries to Daniel Jones contributed to a stunning seven-game losing streak and an 8-9 finish.

The Colts subsequently committed major money to Jones and wide receiver Alec Pierce. They still possess Jonathan Taylor, a capable offensive line and enough talent to compete in the AFC South. Steichen can no longer argue that he needs additional time to establish his program.

Unless injuries completely devastate the roster again, anything short of a playoff appearance will likely end Steichen’s tenure. Indianapolis has extended this experiment long enough.

1. Aaron Glenn, New York Jets

Aaron Glenn enters 2026 with the hottest seat in the NFL after one of the worst debut seasons by a head coach in league history. The Jets finished 3-14, tying for the NFL’s worst record and producing the poorest first-year coaching record in franchise history.

New York finished last in point differential, yardage differential and turnover differential. Most astonishingly, Glenn’s defense became the first in NFL history to complete an entire season without recording an interception. The Jets forced only four total turnovers.

Management chose continuity instead of making Glenn a one-and-done coach, but it also rebuilt a significant portion of the roster. Geno Smith was acquired to stabilize the quarterback position, while New York added several offensive weapons and used premium draft capital to improve both sides of the ball.

Glenn does not necessarily need to reach the playoffs, but the Jets must look organized, competitive and substantially improved. Another three- or four-win season would make his return nearly impossible to defend. If New York begins with another extended losing streak, Glenn may not even make it to January.
