Baltimore Ravens Offseason Review
After much speculation and drama, quarterback Lamar Jackson and the Ravens came to terms on a five year, $260 million contract in late April. Jackson missed the final six games of this past season due to a knee injury; his ability to stay healthy will be a key factor in this teamโs success moving forward. New offensive coordinator Todd Monken comes over from the college ranks, where he had been Georgiaโs offensive coordinator since 2020. Monken runs a variation of the Air-Raid system, and has featured one of the most explosive offenses in the country while at Georgia.
Baltimore signed wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Nelson Agholor to one year deals in free agency, and drafted Zay Flowers in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Beckham Jr. missed this past season after a second ACL injury, and will be depended on to step into a key role sooner than later. Agholor provides veteran depth in case Beckham Jr. or Rashod Bateman struggle. Flowers is undersized, but he is a big play threat who caught 12 passes of 20+ yards for 500 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. With a more spread out offensive attack, better weapons at receiver, more downfield shots in the passing game, and more control at the line of scrimmage, now is the time for Jackson to take a big step forward as a passer.
Ben Powers, Calais Campbell, Marcus Peters, and Chuck Clark were all starters this past season that will need to be replaced, but Baltimore has plenty of options to fill those holes. Powers, Campbell, and Clark will be replaced by young talent already on the roster: Ben Cleveland in for Powers, Broderick Washington in for Campbell, and Kyle Hamilton in for Clark. As for Petersโ old spot at cornerback, the Ravens signed Rock Ya-Sin in free agency and drafted Kyu Blu Kelly out of Stanford in the fifth round. Ya-Sin has battled injuries the last couple of years, but is the favorite to start on the outside. The Ravens didnโt pick up former first rounder Patrick Queenโs fifth year option, and linebacker Trenton Simpson looks like a potential steal in the third round. Simpson has the elite athleticism and prototype size teams look for in the modern NFL linebacker, but he could be better in coverage and needs to start making plays on the ball.
