The AFC South may be the weakest division in the NFL this season. The Jaguars have the makings of a legitimate Super Bowl contender, but the rest of the division is a mess as the Texans start a rebuild, the Colts begin a rebuild, and the Titans are at the end of days for a team that was once a contender.
Questioning whether the Jaguars can compete with the Bills, Bengals, and Kansas City Chiefs remains open until January. Nonetheless, with an explosive offense led by Trevor Lawrence as its quarterback and an improving young defense, they appear poised for postseason success unless disaster strikes again. 11 wins are easily attainable in this very weak division.
DeAndre Hopkins’ addition was an immediate boon for their passing game. Yet, the Titans still face challenges due to an ageing quarterback, running back Derrick Henry closing in on 30 and an unstable defense with questions at all three levels. Mike Vrabel remains an excellent coach, but unfortunately, his talent cannot save this mediocre football team from failure. The Titans are easily the second-best team in this division, but second in this division means your not very good.
This year’s draft brought two key foundational pieces for Houston: quarterback C.J. Stroud and edge-rusher Will Anderson Jr. Additionally, DeMeco Ryans made for an excellent head coaching hire, yet their offense and defense finished as among the worst in NFL in 2022. A rebuild will not happen overnight, but if Stroud’s the real deal, the Texans are a good off-season or two from being contenders, at least in this division.
The Colts are currently focused more on building for their future than competing today. If rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson doesn’t start on opening day, he likely will soon after–with more growing pains to follow once under center. It will be interesting to see whether star running back Jonathan Taylor joins Richardson when he takes to the field once Richardson takes control.
