The AFC East looks to be one of the most competitive in Football this season. The Bills have owned the East for a while, but this season looks to be wide open. The Patriots look to be living on borrowed time with an ageing defense. The Jets have an ageing quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, but he is Aaron Rodgers, the Bills have offensive line issues and the Dolphins’ questions are on defense and with a quarterback who has struggled to stay healthy.
Fans still revelling in Aaron Rodgers’ arrival will likely regard this forecast as too conservative, even though on paper, at least they have the offensive firepower to compete in the AFC East against Buffalo Bills. But Rodgers is 39 years old coming off an up-and-down year, and the Jets have not posted a winning season since 2015. So take it slow, Jets fans. On the other hand, though, the Jets have weapons, and that includes what should be a stout running game. These Jets were very good last year until they had to roll with Zach Wilson, with Rodgers at the helm, the Jets are a Super Bowl contender.
The Bills have won three straight division titles and boasted the league’s second-best offense and sixth-best defense a season ago, earning them second overall in both offensive efficiency and defensive proficiency. Although some critics may question Buffalo’s chances in the postseason, its roster remains one of the strongest in all of football and it remains at the apex of an intense AFC East competition. The issue here is the offensive line and its ineffectiveness can the Bills get over the hump? I look for the Bills to take a small step back this season.
Predicting the Dolphins can be one of the most challenging predictions in football; much depends on their quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa’s health, and their defense’s play. But injuries have already hit hard on defense while their schedule boasts one of the most formidable opponent-winning percentages from last season in the AFC. I could see the Dolphins winning as many as 11 games but I will error on the side of caution because the defense has issues and the quarterback has issues staying healthy.
Bill O’Brien’s addition will undoubtedly benefit Mac Jones and the Patriots offense; however, reality bites when New England has one of the toughest divisions in football to navigate; its defense has also aged rapidly; no team remains contender-worthy forever, and this chapter of New England Patriots history may soon come to a close, which means this could be the end of Bill Belichick in New England.
