After the draft and with each teams camp roster pretty much known, I figured now was as good a time as any to do our first power rankings of the season.
). New England Patriots- Might as well start out with the Patriots, they will be towards the top because they always are. Lets face it with one of the greatest head coach-QB combos in NFL history why not start them at number 1?
). Seattle Seahawks- Went a long way in improving the defensive line in the draft by picking Jarran Reed. We already know about the defensive backs in Seattle and Russell Wilson is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
). Denver Broncos- The defending world champions lost both of the quarterbacks that helped lead them to the Super Bowl victory last year. They still have a great defense and let’s face it QB was not a strong point for them last year. Paxton Lynch was a great pick for them and don’t be surprised if he starts day 1.
). Carolina Panthers- The defending NFC champs have questions to answer, can they replace Josh Norman? Will Benjamin come back as good as before? The answer to the first question I believe is no, the answer to the second question is yes.
). Arizona Cardinals- Still not sold on a team that is led by Carson Palmer, but let’s face it they are one of the most complete teams in the NFL and had a very productive draft. Don’t sleep on a healthy Chris Johnson coming back and having a big year.
). Green Bay Packers- With Jordy Nelson coming back and the drafting of UCLA defensive tackle Kenny Clark the Packers have gotten better on both sides of the ball. Let’s face it any time you have Aaron Rodgers you have a chance.
). Cincinnati Bengals- One of the best teams in the league last year until Andy Dalton went down, they lost Jones and Sanu and replaced them with Brandon Lafell and Tyler Boyd. Talent wise they seem to be a top three team, but the history of the past has to be considered. They won’t be taken seriously until they win a playoff game.
). Pittsburgh Steelers- Defensive back was a problem area which they addressed nicely in the draft, problem is it is hard to depend on rookies in the defensive backfield year one. The other question is can Big Ben stay healthy?
). Minnesota Vikings- The Vikings will continue to improve as long as Teddy Bridgewater does. Play calling needs to let him throw the ball downfield more, it’s time to find out if he is a franchise QB or not.
). Oakland Raiders- Maybe this is too soon to put the Raiders this high, but they are a young talented team that in the offseason picked up even more talent. Karl Joseph the Raiders first round pick fills an immediate need.
). Kansas City Chiefs- With Andy Reid at the helm the Chiefs will always be in the conversation. The addition of Chris Jones in the second round was a nice addition.
). Houston Texans- The Texans improved big time offensively during this off season and will have to as the division improved big time during this off season. The defense is still very good and the offense made major strides to catch up to the defense.
). Washington Redskins- Had a solid draft, the addition of WR Josh Doctson should make the offense even more dangerous.
). Buffalo Bills- If Tyrod Taylor plays well this could be a 10 win team, they had a very good offseason.
). New York Giants- Still have huge question marks on defense, I think Eli Apple was a stretch to take as high as they did. On the other hand I think the WR Shepard will turn out to be a great pick.
). Jacksonville Jaguars- Might have gotten the two best players in the draft in DB Jalen Ramsey and LB Myles Jack. This team on paper is loaded, now it’s time to see if Gus Bradley can take them to the next level.
). New York Jets- Very good defensively, the questions remain at QB.
). Indianapolis Colts- Had an excellent draft, if the can keep Andrew Luck upright they will contend for the AFC South championship.
). Dallas Cowboys- Jaylon Smith was a great pick up in the second round, but they will regret passing on Jalen Ramsey in the first round. Biggest question for this team is can they keep Romo healthy?
). Baltimore Ravens- Ronnie Stanley should provide immediate help, and as long as they have John Harbaugh at the helm they are dangerous.
). San Diego Chargers- I am not sold on Joey Bosa, with that being said this team could be a contender if they are right about him.
). Atlanta Falcons- This was a much tougher team under Dan Quinn last year, will the defense continue to improve under Quinn? They used 3 of the first 4 selections in the draft on the defensive side of the ball.
). Tampa Bay Buccaneers- If Winston keeps improving the offense will be good enough to win 10 games, the questions are on defense.
). Miami Dolphins- The drafting of Tunsil was an absolute steal, now can Taneyhill finally produce like a franchise QB.
). Philadelphia Eagles- Questions abound at QB, don’t be surprised if Chase Daniel beats out Sam Bradford to be the opening day starter.
). Los Angeles Rams- Still a quality defensive team, have they finally found the franchise QB they have been searching for since Kurt Warner left.
). Tennessee Titans- This team could seriously surprise some people. Mariota looked like the real deal last year, add in Demarco Murray and Derrick Henry and they could be dangerous. Either way this has to be a hopeful time for Titans fans who haven’t had much to be hopeful about in awhile.
). Chicago Bears- John Fox likes to run the ball and play defense, a lot will fall on rookie running back Jeremy Langford this year.
). Detroit Lions- Signed some players like Marvin Jones which will help, but this team appears to be in trouble.
). New Orleans Saints- The worst defense in the NFL last year and they only used 3 picks on defense? At least they still have Drew Brees.
). San Francisco 49ers- Had a tremendous draft, the problem is what’s going on at QB. If they straighten out QB situation they could surprise some people.
). Cleveland Browns- You know when I said I was picking New England because it was a safe spot to pick them because they will end up at worst close to the top? Will same goes for the Browns, it’s been awhile since they haven’t been in the bottom ten and I don’t feel this year will be any different.
