The Redbacks fell victim to the Elks in Edmonton, so they are last!
Edmonton Elks fans, players and coaches all rejoiced when their team scored its first home win since 2019 by defeating the Ottawa REDBLACKS by 30-20 to end an almost 22-game home losing streak.
Tre Ford reached 300 passing yards for the first time (15-18, 317 yards and one touchdown). On the ground, he gained 74 yards and scored one touchdown; both are career bests for this second-year quarterback. Elks receiver Eugene Lewis finished with three catches of 112 yards for a game-high 112-yard game total and touchdown as Commonwealth Stadium finally held onto victory again since Oct 12, 2019 — 1,415 days of no success there since!
The Elks have now won two straight after starting off 0-9.
Jake Maier also led his Stampeders team to success with their deep passing game, compiling an impressive 25-of-42 passing statline for 387 yards and four touchdowns, in a shootout less to Toronto.
Reggie Begelton led the Stamps’ receiving corps with 203 yards and two majors as both teams battled it out until an 86-yard touchdown return by Javon Leake gave the home team an edge in this exciting encounter.
On Saturday night at BC Place, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats took down BC Lions 30-13.
Hamilton showed their mettle by stunning an undefeated-at-home Lions team with its ground-and-pound offensive approach and dominant defense. BC had won six consecutive home contests before this game while only permitting one major offensive play across four contests played within their domain in 2023.
Former Leo running back James Butler led the Tabbies’ victory, carrying 21 times for 118 yards and scoring once on the ground while also reeling in three passes for 36 yards through the air and scoring another touchdown through airplay. Quarterback Taylor Powell completed 18 of 23 passes for 222 yards with one touchdown completion as they improved their record to 4-6.
The Riders had the week off this week.
The Alouettes got destroyed last week by the hard-charging Blue Bombers. A big game against the BC Lions is on tap this week.
BC was off their game as the Tiger-Cats won in both trenches battles on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. finished 26-of-40 for 311 yards, scoring one touchdown while also recording an interception; their 7-4 record dropped as a result. It is hard to keep the Lions this high, but we have to consider the entirety of the season also, but another performance like this will start the move down in these rankings.
Double Blue started the match off strong against the Calgary Stampeders before their visitors rallied to take a 21-17 advantage with just seconds remaining in the first half.
At that point, Coxie and Chad Kelly found enough time to link on a 67-yard touchdown that provided momentum heading into halftime, eventually turning into a 39-31 Argonauts win.
Collaros made headlines early when he threw two uncharacteristic pick sixes – including his opening pass of the evening being picked off by Als linebacker Tyrell Richards for a 40-yard score, followed by Marc Antoine Dequoy taking it away and returning it 57 yards for another major score in the second quarter. Collaros finished with three interceptions in total in the first half – the two-time reigning Most Outstanding Player has become notoriously unreliable this season.
When Bombers defense forced three turnovers of its own during a significant third-quarter stretch, Collaros and the team used each to score and open up a big lead in scoring points against the Alouettes defense and blow the game open further.
Bombers’ running back Brady Oliveira benefited greatly from Collaros and the offensive line’s efforts, recording 18 carries for 119 yards and one touchdown, as well as two passes caught for six yards and another score during their victory against the Als’. Though Collaros was regularly caught off-guard during the first half, Oliveira said there was never any panic on the sideline.
