Are the New York Giants headed in the right direction?

Here come the Giants?

What went well: The Giants fired Joe Judge and hired Brian Daboll from Buffalo and hired them to replace the much-maligned pair of Joe Judge and Dave Gettleman. The Giants declined Daniel Jones’ fifth-year option. It went away from veterans, Logan Ryan and Kyle Rudolph. Gettleman acquisitions like Jabrill Peppers and Will Hernandez were allowed to go in free agency. The Giants are expected to pick two compensatory picks, the first since 2020. Schoen signed Mark Glowinski (with Jon Feliciano) and Max Garcia, following the path taken by the Bills to calm down Josh Allen. Ricky Seals-Jones and Jordan Akins were brought in to help rebuild the tight end. Tyrod Taylor was also signed to support Jones. New York chose quantity over quality, although that is not always a guarantee for success. However, all of its additions were made on fair deals. The improved offensive line and tight end upgrades should help Daniel Jones, and if it doesn’t, look for Tyrod Taylor to step in at quarterback.

The Giants drafted the most critical positions after years of neglecting those positions. The Giants used the No. 5th overall pick for edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and the No. 7 selection for offensive tackle Evan Neal. Schoen traded down twice in round two and landed wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson. After years of using first-rounders for a nose tackle and running back, the Giants now seem more conscious of the importance of positional scarcity.

What went wrong? Schoen knew he would need to create some cap space. After spending the spring trying to trade away cornerback James Bradberry to make room, the Giants had to let him go; Bradberry was undoubtedly their most valuable defensive starter between 2020-2021.

Although I am surprised that they couldn’t find a more creative solution to the cap problem and pay some of his 2022 deal, I recognize that the cap mess is something the current regime inherits from the previous one. Keep in mind that the Giants had to restructure contracts at the end of 2021 to remain cap-compliant throughout the season.

Robinson is in a vital position. However, it was interesting to see them add a player who was considered a midround selection. Check out the best new sportsbooks for betting on the NFL!

They could do differently: Neal was profiled as a left tackle prospect for the franchise, but Andrew Thomas made a leap forward in his second season, and Neal could play right tackle. Two great tackles are needed in the modern NFL. However, I wonder if they should have drafted their class’ wideouts first and used the Robinson selection to address the offensive line.

Schoen could have brought in more competition for the quarterback position, considering that Taylor has been injured or ineffective most of his post-Bills tenure. The Giants did not sign Bills’ backup Mitch Trubinsky, who signed a $6.3 million one-year deal with the Steelers. Marcus Mariota was available at the Giants’ signing of Taylor. Jones isn’t a good pro, and they don’t have a great offensive line. However, Jones’ numbers under pressure have fallen across his first three seasons. New York has not committed to Jones in 2023. However, it can be made a good case that they shouldn’t lock him in as the starter for 2022.

Next: The Giants will sign their draft class without much cap space and attempt to make it to training camps without serious injuries. Although they might trade Barkley or Leonard Williams for someone else, those moves are more likely during the season.
