The AFC looks like it is stacked, they have possibly eight of the top ten quarterbacks in the NFL, and they have young teams like the Bengals, Chargers, and Bills that look like complete teams. Today, we will look at where all the teams stand after free agency and the NFL draft. Check out the top new sportsbooks to bet on the NFL!
I thought they overreached in the draft, especially with Stingly, they have a solid looking quarterback in Davis Mills, but my most significant reason for ranking the Texans last is that Lovie Smith is the head coach. They almost seem like they are setting up to hopefully get the number one pick next year when the Quarterback options will be much better in next year’s draft.
The Jags made a huge mistake picking Travon Walker at number one, but what else would we expect from the Jaguars? The Jags overplayed in free agency, and the signings were not overly impressive. The Jags will be better in 2022, but that wouldn’t take much!
The Jets have gotten significantly better, but Zach Wilson is still a huge question mark? They loaded up on talent with three first-round picks, including Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, and Jermaine Johnson. They also have Breece Hall, who could be the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. If Zach Wilson pans out, this team could make a Wild Card run.
The Steelers defense should be good again, and the run game should be good, but replacing Big Ben will be hard to do, and I don’t think Kenny Pickett or Mitch Trubisky will be able to do it. Put the Steelers in the AFC South, and they would have a chance; in the AFC North, not so much!
The Patriots had a terrible draft, except I like quarterback Bailey Zappe. But this team is no better than last year’s, and they are likely worse.
Is replacing Carson Wentz with Matt Ryan that big of a change? If it were the Matt Ryan of five years ago, that would be an easy answer; today, not so much. Wentz lacked the leadership that I think Ryan has, so it’s an upgrade. Is that upgrade enough to overtake the Titans in the AFC Sout? It could but in the end, with the rest of the AFC stacked, the Colts are playoff contenders, but that’s it. The Colts are way behind the top teams in the AFC.
The Dolphins got much better this offseason with the addition of Tyreek Hill and Cedrick Wilson joining Jaylen Waddle in the receiving corps. Tua Tagovailoa is the question when people discuss the Dolphins, I think a new head coach will help Tua, but the inconsistency he has shown makes me worry that this will be a talent-laden team with no quarterback to get them where they want to go.
I know Browns fans are excited by the signing of DeShaun Watson, but let’s late a bit and see how this works out? He could be suspended this season, so we have to factor that in. They also gave up way too much to get Watson, and how many times have Browns fans been excited to see it all fall apart over the last few years? I will believe it when I see it?
The Raiders added Davante Adams, but will that be enough in a loaded AFC West? The Raiders will be a good team, but the competition in the division could keep them from a return trip to the playoffs.
Most people will favour the Titans to win the AFC South, but like the Colts, they don’t have the overall firepower to do more than that. They replaced A.J. Brown with a rookie, and Derrick Henry is not getting any younger.
The Ravens still lack weapons in the passing game to help Lamar Jackson. The defense got better, especially with the addition of Safety Kyle Hamilton in the draft, but in the AFC, you will have to score points no matter how good your defense is, and the Ravens will come up short against the teams listed above them. The addition of Russell Wilson makes the Broncos a Super Bowl contender, and when you look at the Broncos weapons, they are serious contenders. Denver has weapons all over the place in guys like Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, Javonte Williams, and Melvin Gordon. They also have Patrick Surtain, Bradley Chubb, and Randy Gregory on defence.
Everybody wants to talk about Justin Herbert and the offense, but the defense could be what puts this team over the top with the addition of Khalil Mack. On offense the Chargers offensive line is now better with the addition of Zion Johnson.
The Chiefs lost Tyreek Hill, but they had a solid offseason and still look like a serious contender. They strengthened the defense through the draft by picking Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis. They added Skyy Moore in the draft and JuJu Smith Schuster in free agency to account for Hill’s loss.
The Bills need to upgrade the defense, and they did just that by adding Von Miller in free agency and Kaiir Elam in the draft. The offense is still loaded with an elite quarterback and wide receiver with Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs, and this is a young team, and with the addition of a veteran leader like Von Miller, all of the pieces seem to be in place for a deep run.
After watching the Bengals go to Tennessee and Kansas City and win, how can you not rank them number one after the offseason they had. The offensive line kept them from winning the Super Bowl last year, but now that issue seems to be fixed. On defense last year, the Bengals were excellent and seemed only to get better as the season went on. The Bengals will have a top ten defense in 2022 and the most explosive offense in the NFL.
