Cleveland Browns Offseason Review
This offseason was all about shoring up the defensive line, and getting Deshaun Watson more help in the passing game. The run defense was among the worst in the league, and the Browns finished the season with only 34 sacks. Dalvin Tomlinson was one of the key pieces brought in to help stuff the run, while Trysten Hill and Maurice Hurst were also signed in free agency to add depth inside. Siaki Ika, the mammoth and athletic nose tackle from Baylor, was added in the third round as well. Ika and Tomlinson add some much needed girth inside.
In an effort to beef up a pass rush that left a lot to be desired, the Browns traded two fifth round picks to Minnesota for edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. Smith finished the season with 10 sacks for the Vikings, but he hopes to be more consistent over the full year after logging only one sack after week ten. Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, who had a breakout season for the lowly Texans, was added via free agency to provide some quality depth behind Smith and Myles Garrett. Cleveland then spent a fourth round pick on Isaiah McGuire in the Draft, topping off the defensive line rebuild. McGuire has the size and power to hold up against the run.
Making life easier for Watson’s first full season with the team was clearly a priority this offseason. Cleveland traded their second round pick in this year’s Draft to the Jets for wide receiver Elijah Moore and Gang Green’s third round pick. Moore will be expected to be the number two receiver behind Amari Cooper. Moore has been used all over the formation thus far in practices, and is poised for a big first season in Cleveland. Marquise Goodwin was signed in free agency as a mentor and deep threat.
Tennessee wide receiver Cedric Tillman was the Browns’ first pick in the NFL Draft – 74th overall in the third round. Tillman is a physical outside receiver, and only suffered five drops in his college career. Aside from the revamped receiving corps, keep an eye on fourth round offensive tackle Dawand Jones. Jones dropped because of questions about his weight and effort, but he has elite size and length; he dominated at the Senior Bowl, and could be a future fixture at right tackle.
