Miami Dolphins Offseason Review
The starting runningback duo of Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. was average at best this past season, while backups Salvon Ahmed and Myles Gaskin provided very little the few times they were called upon. While the team decided to re-sign all four to new deals this offseason, that didnβt stop them from adding another player with world class speed to the rotation. Devon Achane, selected 84th overall in the third round, ran a 4.32-second 40-yard time and was a member of the Texas A&M track squad. Achane is undersized and might never be able to handle a big workload, but his speed/ability to make people miss makes him a legit game-breaker who must be accounted for at all times. His biggest contributions early on might come as a return man and in the receiving game.
Losing tight end Mike Gesicki in free agency to New England wasnβt ideal, but he never seemed to fit right within this offense anyway. With Durham Smythe still in the fold, and Eric Saubert and Tyler Kroft added through free agency, the Dolphins have plenty of veteran options at the position. The offensive line, which suffered through injuries and ineffectiveness again this past season, added some much needed veteran depth. Bringing in Dan Feeney and Isaiah Wynn during free agency adds competition at a couple of different spots. Feeney could battle for a starting spot at guard, or be a versatile backup at center and guard. Wynn should challenge Austin Jackson for the starting role at right tackle, and at the very least be the swing tackle.
The Dolphins released cornerback Byron Jones, and filled his spot with one of the best corners in the league. Miami traded a 2023 third round pick and tight end Hunter Long to the Rams for superstar defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey has been considered by many to be one of the best defensive backs in the NFL the past few years. The team also drafted cornerback Cam Smith out of South Carolina in the second round, and signed safety Deshon Elliott in free agency from the Lions. Smith should start out in the slot as a rookie, while Elliott is a likely starter at safety alongside Jevon Holland. Free agent linebacker David Long was brought in from Tennessee to beef up the linebacking depth. Long is excellent against the run, can be used as an off ball blitzer, and had a solid season for the Titans.
