Week Zero Is a Trap and the Ranked Teams That Fall for It Pay Dearly

The 2026 college football season opens in Week Zero on Saturday, August 29, a week before most of the sport takes the field on Labor Day weekend. The headliner is overseas again, with Bill Belichick taking North Carolina to Dublin to face TCU at the Aviva Stadium. Week Zero has steadily grown into a genuine event over the past decade, and somewhere along the way, it also became the most dangerous week on the calendar for any team carrying expectations.

We got the first proof before a ball was kicked. NC State and Virginia were set to open in Rio de Janeiro in the first-ever college football game in Brazil. Three months out, it collapsed and got moved back to Charlottesville after organizers said it could not happen. The cases were the things that made these trips punishing: weak demand, shaky logistics abroad, and a payday that shrank from around $2 million to a $1.5 million breach payment for NC State. The trap does not always wait for the snap.

When it waits, the evidence piles up in the same Irish Stadium. Florida State went to Dublin in 2024 ranked tenth in the country, lost to Georgia Tech on a last second field goal, and unraveled into a 2-10 season that nobody on earth saw coming Last August the same building hosted Kansas State and Iowa State in the first Week Zero meeting of two top-25 teams since 2002, and the 17th-ranked Wildcats lost to their rivals and spent the fall chasing a preseason billing they never lived up to. Even Nebraska, a 13-point favorite in Dublin back in 2022, lost to Northwestern and fired its coach within weeks.

The reasons the trap keeps working are not complicated. These games arrive before a team has any identity, and in the portal era, that is worse than ever, because August rosters are essentially rooms full of strangers learning each other’s names. Add a trans-Atlantic flight, a five-hour time change, unfamiliar food, and broken sleep, and you have an ordinary opponent suddenly playing on even terms. The opponent deals with the same conditions, of course. But only the ranked team carries the real downside, because an August loss stains a resume before the season even has a pulse – and the spiral that follows can be worse than the loss. Ask Florida State how that goes.

This year’s edition has a storyline that the sport has never had before. Dublin is a rematch of Belichick’s very first college game, which TCU won 48-14 in Chapel Hill.Ā  And now the most decorated coach in NFL history opens year two an ocean from home against the new program that embarrassed him in front of his fans. Belichick is saying the right things, telling reporters this spring, ā€œWe’re very excited and looking forward to the international game in Ireland.ā€ Whichever team shows up ranked carries the risk, and Brazil is a reminder that the danger started long before kick-off.

There is also a clock running on the whole experiment, because an NCAA committee has recommended folding Week Zero into Week 1 starting in 2027, a change the Division I cabinet takes up at its meeting later this month. If it passes, this is the final standalone version of the strangest little week in the sport, one last chance for the trap to close on somebody important.

None of this means a contender should refuse these trips, because the exposure is real and the experience unforgettable for the players. It does mean that what happens in Dublin deserves to be read carefully rather than loudly, and the Brazil collapse is a warning. A ranked team that survives ugly in August has not necessarily disappointed anyone, so to say, and a team that loses has not necessarily died. However, history says one of them will spend September trying to convince itself of that second part. The sport finds its first victim early every single year, and in 2026, it claimed one before the season even started.
