College Football Week 4 Predictions
Week 3 was filled with drama in Georgia/Tennessee, A&M/Notre Dame, Georgia Tech/Clemson along with a variety of upsets across the country. Week 4 features marquee matchups in the SEC, Big Ten, and Big-12. Also, multiple games flying under the radar that should produce plenty of action. The AP Poll voters have faced scrutiny in recent years and for good reason. The deadline for the AP poll should be pushed back to give media members time to think it through and God forbid watch more games. Stepping off my soap box now gearing up for another week of college football.
#11 Oklahoma vs. #22 Auburn: Former Sooners QB Jackson Arnold returns to Norman to face Oklahoma in an interesting SEC tilt. Oklahoma has a new quarterback by the name of John Mateer, a Washington State transfer. Auburn got an impressive victory on the road over Baylor. The Tigers tore up the Bears with a potent rushing attack. Oklahoma defeated Michigan at home facing a similar style to Auburn’s offense, whose main goal tends to be establishing the run. Mateer has added a run/pass threat Oklahoma was lacking last year. To be fair, lack of wide receivers for the Sooners due to injury was significant. Michigan doesn’t have the same fire power at wide receiver as Auburn does. Look for the Sooners defense to limit the Tigers effectiveness on the ground and force Arnold to beat them through the air.
The Pick: Oklahoma wins but the pick is Auburn +7
#9 Illinois vs. #19 Indiana: The Hoosiers host the Illini in what could turn out to be a crucial Big Ten clash with playoff implications Indiana’s non-conference schedule has been fairly week. At Duke is the best opponent Illinois has faced but it’s not like the Blue Devils true contenders. When push comes to shove something must give in the form of the Indiana offense versus Illinois defense. The Hoosiers average 300 rushing yard a game, while the Illini defense only gives up 75. Yes, these are early season stats but that will be a key battle. Both teams have quality quarterbacks and competent head coaches. Regardless of who wins the outcome will be on the table deep into the 4th quarter.
The Pick: Illinois +6
#16 Utah vs. #17 Texas Tech: This Big-12 tussle is yet another big-time matchups that’s flying under the radar on Saturday’s schedule. Texas Tech made a ton of noise in the transfer portal and now the Red Raiders must prove it on the field. It appears the Utes have a good fit a quarterback in Devon Dampier. Not to take anything away from Tech’s QB in Behren Morton who’s stuffing the stat sheets. There’s no denying Texas Tech is talented and more than capable of stealing a win on the road. The ‘road’ in that last sentence is the key word, and Utah is very difficult to defeat at home
The Pick: Utah -3
#4 Miami vs. Florida: This interstate scrap lost some of its luster with the Gators getting upset by USF two weeks ago. Miami took care of business in week 3 by defeating that same USF squad by a wide margin. The Gators had every chance to beat LSU last week if it wasn’t for the 5 interceptions thrown by Florida QB DJ Lagway. The offensive side has been an issue for the Gators, but their defense is legit. Miami’s defense has come a long way from last year’s unit, and their offense is still functioning at a high level. One thing we get to find out is how focused and real the Hurricanes are taking on a team that could pull the upset if they don’t get down early. If the game is tight near the end let’s see how head coach Mario Cristobal handles the pressure.
The Pick: Miam wins but Florida makes it close enough +9.5
Rutgers protect home field pulling off a minor upset as a +2.5 home dog over Iowa.
#21 Michigan vs. Nebraska: Is this the year the Nebraska Cornhuskers finally show some life? Can the Wolverines improve on offense taking on yet another road challenge? Will Nebraska have enough success on the ground to go open their passing offense? Will the Michigan be able to complete meaningful passes and finish drives in the red zone? This one is perfect for the barnburner category because it’s a true flip of the coin.
The Pick: Nebraska +2.5
TCU vs SMU: SMU looks to win a game as an underdog after losing to Baylor as a favorite. TCU had a dominate outing in week 1 versus UNC. The quarterbacks are very good; TCU’s Josh Hoover has a wealth of experience and SMU’s Kevin Jennings was under center for a Mustangs program that made the playoffs in 2024. The Horned Frogs have won 3 out of the last 5 meetings.
The Pick: TCU -7
West Virginia +13.5 versus Kansas
Tulane +12.5 versus Ole Miss
Syracuse +17.5 versus Clemson
