Miami RedHawks 2026 Defensive Breakdown: Veteran Linebackers, Proven Pass Rush and 4 Prop Bets

The Miami RedHawks enter the 2026 college football season with a defense that once again has the potential to rank among the best units in the Mid-American Conference.

That has become an expectation in Oxford.

Miami allowed only 21.7 points and 334.6 total yards per game in 2025, limiting opponents to 134.3 rushing yards and 200.4 passing yards per contest. The RedHawks also generated 41 sacks and 14 interceptions during their 14-game season.

Those weren’t unusual numbers for defensive coordinator Bill Brechin.

Since Brechin took over the defense, Miami has finished among the top three in the MAC defensively in each of his four seasons. Since the beginning of 2022, his defenses have forced 83 turnovers and recorded 133 sacks.

That gives Miami something many Group of Five programs don’t possess.

Defensive continuity.

The challenge is replacing major individual production.

Miami loses linebacker Jackson Kuwatch, who recorded 109 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks before being selected by the Carolina Panthers in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The RedHawks also must replace 2025 leading tackler Eli Blakey, who finished with 118 stops.

Those are enormous losses.

But Miami attacked those losses with experienced transfers while returning several productive players.

Malcolm McCain returns.

Bai Jobe returns.

James Schott returns.

Brach Rice returns.

Kaleb Martin returns.

And Miami added experienced defenders such as Blayne Myrick, CJ Young, Dillon Tatum, Amariyun Knighten and Ben Minich.

The result should be another deep, physical and experienced Miami defense.

Biggest Defensive Strength: Linebacker Depth and Experience

Biggest Defensive Question: Can Miami replace the leadership and production of Jackson Kuwatch and Eli Blakey?

Bill Brechin’s Miami Defense

Miami’s defensive success isn’t accidental.

It has become one of the foundations of the program.

Bill Brechin enters his fifth season as Miami’s defensive coordinator and 13th season overall with the RedHawks. His defenses have finished top-three in the MAC in each of his first four seasons running the unit.

The numbers demonstrate remarkable consistency.

Miami has generated 133 sacks and 83 takeaways since 2022.

In Brechin’s first season coordinating the defense, Miami led the MAC in scoring defense and rushing defense.

Then came the extraordinary 2023 unit.

Miami ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense at 15.9 points allowed per game and surrendered only 86 points during eight MAC games.

The RedHawks allowed just nine touchdowns throughout conference play that season.

The names have changed.

The defensive identity hasn’t.

Miami wants to stop the run.

Generate pressure without constantly exposing the secondary.

Force opponents into obvious passing situations.

Create turnovers.

And make offenses consistently execute long drives.

That philosophy remained effective in 2025.

Opponents averaged only 3.7 yards per rushing attempt, while Miami generated 41 sacks and intercepted 14 passes.

That combination is difficult to attack.

And despite losing several stars, Miami has enough returning and incoming talent to maintain that identity.

Miami Defensive Line Breakdown

The defensive line has a chance to become one of Miami’s deepest position groups.

Start with Bai Jobe.

Jobe arrived in Oxford after previous stops at Michigan State and Kansas and began demonstrating his potential during the 2025 season.

He appeared in all 14 games and recorded 16 tackles, four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

He recorded his first collegiate sack against Rutgers and added another in Miami’s victory over Buffalo.

Those numbers could increase significantly in 2026.

Jobe is 6-foot-4 and approximately 235 pounds with the athletic ability to attack from multiple positions.

He doesn’t need to become a 10-sack player.

Miami simply needs him to become a consistent disruptive presence.

James Schott provides another proven pass rusher.

Schott appeared in all 14 games last season and finished with 18 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

That gives Miami two returning defensive linemen who combined for seven sacks.

Then there is Brach Rice.

Rice played in 13 games and made four starts in 2025, finishing with 16 tackles and two sacks. Both sacks came against UNLV.

Miami also added veteran Kam Wilson, who previously played at Cincinnati and Louisville. Wilson recorded 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks last season.

The interior has considerable size.

Marcus Moore is listed at 310 pounds.

Donovan Davis is 307.

Carmine Orozco is 308.

OJ Alexander is 291.

Logan Howell is 295.

That depth allows defensive-line coach Isiah Dunning to rotate players rather than asking three or four linemen to play nearly every snap.

Fresh bodies become particularly important during MAC play in November.

Miami’s defensive line doesn’t have one proven superstar entering the season.

It has something potentially more important.

Depth.

Projected Miami Team Sacks: 36-40

Miami Edge-Rusher Breakdown

Miami’s pass rush was one of its biggest strengths last season.

The RedHawks recorded 41 sacks while allowing only 200 passing yards per game.

The relationship between those numbers isn’t complicated.

Quarterbacks didn’t consistently have enough time.

Replacing some of the pressure production will be challenging, but Jobe and Schott give Miami two legitimate returning options.

Jobe’s upside is particularly interesting.

His 3.5 sacks last season came during his first year in Miami’s system.

More experience should allow him to play faster.

Schott also enters his second year after transferring from Michigan State.

He already demonstrated the ability to generate pressure with 3.5 sacks last season.

Rice adds another rotational option.

Wilson adds veteran experience.

And Miami has younger players such as Devin Bell, Javon Hammonds, Anthony Ludington and Aariz Taylor competing for expanded roles.

Brechin doesn’t necessarily need one defender to produce double-digit sacks.

Miami’s system has traditionally created pressure from multiple positions.

That makes offensive protection considerably more difficult.

If Jobe progresses and the linebacker group creates additional blitz pressure, another season above 35 sacks is realistic.

Miami Linebacker Breakdown

This may be the strongest position on Miami’s entire defense.

Losing Jackson Kuwatch would be devastating for many programs.

Miami responded by assembling one of the deepest linebacker groups in the MAC.

It begins with Malcolm McCain.

McCain played in all 14 games last season but made only eight starts.

He still finished with 73 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

That production immediately makes him one of the leading candidates to become Miami’s defensive leader.

McCain finished the season especially well.

He recorded a career-high 13 tackles against Fresno State in the Arizona Bowl and produced sacks against Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

With Kuwatch gone, McCain should receive even more opportunities.

But Miami didn’t simply hand him the entire linebacker room.

The RedHawks added Blayne Myrick from South Alabama.

Myrick brings enormous experience.

He appeared in 36 career games at South Alabama and produced 192 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and two sacks.

He earned first-team all-conference honors in 2025 after recording 84 tackles and six tackles for loss.

That is an enormous addition.

Miami also landed CJ Young from Kent State.

Young has already accumulated 123 career tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and an interception.

He earned Second-Team All-MAC recognition in 2025 after recording 89 tackles, eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Consider that combination.

McCain: 73 tackles last season.

Myrick: 84.

Young: 89.

That is 246 tackles of 2025 production between three players.

Miami also returns Brock Uihlein, who recorded 29 tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble in 2025.

Luke Myers returns after missing most of last season because of injury.

Christian McKinney, Malik Ray, Harrison Brewster and several younger linebackers provide additional depth.

Replacing Kuwatch’s 109 tackles won’t be easy.

Miami may not have to replace them with one player.

Brechin can distribute those opportunities across an extremely deep linebacker room.

That may make this defense even more difficult to prepare for.

Malcolm McCain: Miami’s Defensive Leader

Every good defense needs someone in the middle capable of controlling it.

Malcolm McCain has an opportunity to become that player for Miami.

His 2025 production is already impressive.

Seventy-three tackles.

Seven-and-a-half tackles for loss.

Two sacks.

A forced fumble.

And he accomplished those numbers while making only eight starts.

The opportunity increases substantially in 2026.

Kuwatch is gone.

Blakey is gone.

Miami must replace its top two tacklers.

McCain is the obvious returning candidate to assume a bigger leadership role.

His presence becomes even more valuable because of the transfers around him.

Myrick understands how to play high-volume linebacker snaps.

Young has already produced at an All-MAC level.

McCain shouldn’t have to compensate for inexperienced players.

Instead, Miami potentially has three experienced linebackers who can attack offenses together.

That could make McCain more productive.

Opposing offensive lines can’t consistently account for everybody.

If Jobe and Schott occupy attention up front, McCain should have opportunities to attack downhill.

Malcolm McCain Projection: 82-90 tackles, 8-10 tackles for loss, 2-4 sacks and multiple forced turnovers.

Miami Secondary Breakdown

This is where Miami has some significant questions.

The good news is that the RedHawks have options.

Kaleb Martin provides proven returning production.

Martin started 12 games in 2025 and recorded 33 tackles and seven pass breakups.

Those seven pass breakups are important.

Martin has already demonstrated that he can consistently challenge receivers.

The RedHawks also added several extremely experienced defensive backs.

Dillon Tatum arrives after stops at Michigan State and Northwestern.

Tatum appeared in 22 games for Michigan State and made eight starts during the 2023 season, recording 45 tackles before suffering an injury. He later recorded 22 tackles and a pass breakup in 12 games at Northwestern.

That gives Miami a Power Four-tested safety.

Amariyun Knighten adds additional experience.

Knighten appeared in 27 games with 13 starts at Northern Illinois before transferring to Indiana. His first collegiate interception came at Notre Dame in 2024 and helped set up Northern Illinois’ game-winning field goal.

Then there is Ben Minich.

The West Chester, Ohio native returns home after spending three seasons at Notre Dame.

Minich appeared in 29 games for the Fighting Irish and played in 12 contests during the 2025 season.

Miami’s current secondary also includes Toney Coleman Jr., Mychal Yharbrough, Jackson Pons, Jermaine Agee, Isaiah Rollins and several younger players.

There is plenty of talent.

The issue is chemistry.

Several of Miami’s defensive backs are new to the program.

Communication in the secondary cannot be assumed.

That will be one of the most important storylines during September.

Fortunately, Miami’s pass rush should help.

If the RedHawks consistently generate pressure, defensive backs won’t have to cover receivers for five or six seconds.

That is how Miami can remain one of the MAC’s best pass defenses.

Projected Miami Interceptions: 12-15

Why the Over Is a Good Bet

Miami recorded 41 sacks in 2025.

That wasn’t an isolated performance.

Brechin’s defenses have accumulated 133 sacks since the beginning of 2022.

Generating pressure is built into Miami’s defensive identity.

The RedHawks also return several players who demonstrated pass-rushing ability last season.

Jobe recorded 3.5 sacks.

Schott recorded 3.5.

Rice recorded two.

Miami also added Wilson, who produced two sacks last season.

Then consider the linebacker room.

Myrick recorded six tackles for loss last season.

Young produced eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

McCain contributed 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

Miami has numerous ways to create negative plays.

Reaching 36 sacks would require some regression from last year’s total and still cash this Over.

Why the Under Is a Good Bet

Forty-one sacks is a difficult number to repeat.

Miami lost important pass-rushing production.

Kuwatch alone contributed five sacks from linebacker.

Opponents will also study Brechin’s pressure packages and attempt to neutralize them with quicker throws.

Miami’s deep linebacker group could help offset those losses, but new personnel sometimes requires an adjustment period.

Jobe and Schott have flashed pass-rushing ability.

Neither has proven yet that he can become Miami’s primary six-to-eight-sack defender.

Why the Over Is a Good Bet

Miami intercepted 14 passes last season.

The formula remains intact.

Pressure quarterbacks.

Force difficult throws.

Give defensive backs opportunities to attack the football.

The secondary also has extensive experience.

Martin started 12 games last season.

Tatum brings Big Ten experience.

Knighten has 13 previous collegiate starts.

Minich appeared in 29 games at Notre Dame.

Miami doesn’t have to teach these players how to play college football.

It primarily has to teach them how to play together.

If the pass rush remains productive, quarterbacks should continue giving the secondary takeaway opportunities.

Twelve interceptions over a 12-game regular season requires only one per contest.

That is achievable.

Why the Under Is a Good Bet

Interceptions can fluctuate dramatically from season to season.

Good coverage doesn’t always create turnovers.

Dropped interceptions matter.

Quarterbacks throwing the ball away matter.

Game situations matter.

Miami is also replacing important pieces in the secondary.

New defensive backs must establish communication and understand Brechin’s coverage rules.

September games against Pittsburgh and Cincinnati could expose mistakes while that chemistry develops. Miami opens at Pittsburgh before facing Holy Cross and traveling to Cincinnati.

The RedHawks could still play excellent pass defense while finishing with nine or 10 interceptions.

Projection: 12-15 Interceptions

Bet: Over 11.5 Interceptions

Confidence: 7/10

Why the Over Is a Good Bet

McCain recorded 73 tackles despite starting only eight games last season.

Now his role should increase substantially.

Miami must replace Kuwatch’s 109 tackles and Blakey’s team-leading production.

McCain is the most obvious returning defender to absorb additional snaps and opportunities.

He only needs seven more tackles than he recorded last season to reach 80.

That is approximately one additional tackle every two games.

Playing an entire season as a starter could produce considerably more than that.

The players around him should also help.

Myrick and Young give Miami other linebackers offenses must account for.

Jobe and Schott can create penetration.

That should allow McCain to pursue the football instead of constantly fighting through blockers.

Why the Under Is a Good Bet

Miami’s extraordinary linebacker depth could work against the Over.

Myrick recorded 84 tackles last season.

Young recorded 89.

Brechin doesn’t need McCain to play every snap if he has three starting-caliber linebackers.

A deep rotation could keep everyone fresh but reduce individual tackle totals.

There is also the possibility Miami’s defense becomes even more efficient.

Fewer opponent plays mean fewer tackle opportunities.

And as with every full-season player prop, one or two missed games can make the difference.

Projection: 82-90 Tackles

Bet: Over 79.5 Tackles

Confidence: 7.5/10

Why the Over Is a Good Bet

Jobe recorded 3.5 sacks during his first season at Miami.

He doesn’t need a dramatic improvement to surpass 4.5.

Two additional sacks would cash the wager.

His experience in the system matters.

Jobe now understands Brechin’s expectations.

He understands how Miami sets up its pressure packages.

And he should enter 2026 with a larger role.

The linebackers also create favorable opportunities.

Offensive lines cannot simply slide every protection toward Jobe when McCain, Myrick and Young are capable of blitzing.

Schott’s presence on the opposite side provides another legitimate threat.

Jobe should receive enough one-on-one opportunities to reach five sacks.

Why the Under Is a Good Bet

Jobe hasn’t actually produced five sacks in a college season yet.

That matters.

Potential is different from proven production.

Miami also has considerable defensive-line depth.

Schott.

Rice.

Wilson.

Bell.

Hammonds.

If Brechin rotates heavily, Jobe may not receive the snap volume required for a major statistical breakout.

Miami’s defense is also designed around collective production rather than building the pass rush around one player.

Jobe could become a considerably better defender while finishing with four sacks.

Projection: 5-7 Sacks

Bet: Over 4.5 Sacks

Confidence: 7/10

Best Miami RedHawks 2026 Defensive Prop Bet

Miami Over 35.5 team sacks is my strongest defensive wager.

The evidence extends beyond one season.

Miami produced 41 sacks in 2025, and Brechin’s defenses have accumulated 133 sacks since 2022.

This program consistently creates quarterback pressure.

And there are numerous candidates capable of contributing.

Jobe.

Schott.

Rice.

Wilson.

McCain.

Myrick.

Young.

Miami doesn’t need one player to record 10 sacks.

If Jobe produces six, Schott produces five and several other defenders contribute three or four, the RedHawks can quickly approach 40 again.

My projection of 36-40 team sacks puts Miami above the benchmark while still expecting some regression from last year’s 41.

How Miami’s Defense Could Determine the 2026 Season

Miami’s current regular-season win total has been listed around 7.5 victories.

The defense is the biggest reason the Over remains realistic.

The nonconference schedule begins at Pittsburgh, followed by Holy Cross, Cincinnati and Connecticut.

Miami then enters MAC play against Bowling Green, UMass, Akron, Central Michigan, Buffalo, Ohio, Kent State and Western Michigan.

That schedule provides opportunities.

The Pittsburgh and Cincinnati games will test Miami against Power Four athletes.

Holy Cross provides an opportunity to develop depth.

UConn presents another important nonconference test.

Then comes the MAC schedule.

Miami has reached the MAC Championship Game in each of the last three seasons, creating an established expectation that this program should compete for the conference championship again.

Defense will probably have to lead the way.

The RedHawks’ offense enters 2026 with significant questions, particularly at quarterback.

That means there could be weeks when Miami needs to win 20-17 rather than 38-35.

Brechin has built exactly the kind of defense capable of winning those games.

My projection is 8-4, putting Miami slightly Over the 7.5-win benchmark and once again in the MAC Championship conversation.

Conclusion

The Miami RedHawks have established one of the most consistent defensive programs in the Mid-American Conference.

The 2025 season provided another example.

Miami allowed only 21.7 points and 334.6 yards per game.

Opponents rushed for only 134.3 yards per contest.

The RedHawks recorded 41 sacks.

They intercepted 14 passes.

And Miami finished 7-7 despite facing Wisconsin, Rutgers, UNLV, the MAC Championship Game and a bowl game during its 14-game schedule.

Maintaining that production won’t be automatic.

The losses are significant.

Jackson Kuwatch produced 109 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Eli Blakey led Miami with 118 tackles.

Replacing 227 combined tackles from two defenders is difficult.

But Miami may be unusually equipped to handle it.

Malcolm McCain returns after recording 73 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss.

Blayne Myrick arrives after producing 84 tackles and earning first-team all-conference honors at South Alabama.

CJ Young arrives after producing 89 tackles, eight tackles for loss and earning Second-Team All-MAC honors at Kent State.

That linebacker trio could become one of the best in the MAC.

The defensive line has intriguing depth.

Bai Jobe and James Schott each recorded 3.5 sacks last season.

Brach Rice produced two.

Kam Wilson adds another veteran pass rusher.

The secondary has more questions but also considerable experience.

Kaleb Martin returns after starting 12 games and recording seven pass breakups.

Dillon Tatum brings experience from Michigan State and Northwestern.

Amariyun Knighten brings 13 previous starts at Northern Illinois.

Ben Minich brings 29 games of experience from Notre Dame.

My projection has Miami allowing approximately 20-22 points and 320-335 yards per game while producing 36-40 sacks, 12-15 interceptions and 20-23 total takeaways.

That would once again make Miami one of the MAC’s most difficult defenses to attack.

From a betting perspective, my strongest play is Miami Over 35.5 team sacks.

The RedHawks have too much history of generating pressure under Brechin to ignore.

The individual names may change.

The defensive philosophy doesn’t.

Miami stops the run.

Miami pressures quarterbacks.

Miami creates turnovers.

And Miami forces opponents to earn virtually everything.

That defensive identity has helped the RedHawks become one of the MAC’s most consistent programs.

If McCain successfully takes over as the leader of the defense, Myrick and Young immediately translate their previous production to Oxford and Jobe emerges as Miami’s next premier pass rusher, the 2026 RedHawks defense should once again be good enough to carry Miami into the MAC championship race — and potentially another trip to Detroit.
