The Cincinnati Bearcats enter the 2026 college football season with a significantly different offense, but there is enough experience and talent remaining for Scott Satterfield’s team to remain productive in the Big 12.

Cincinnati finished 7-6 in 2025 while producing more than 5,200 yards of total offense. The Bearcats were especially dangerous on the ground, rushing for more than 2,200 yards while scoring 51 total touchdowns.

The biggest question entering 2026 is how Cincinnati replaces quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who accounted for a huge percentage of the offense’s production.

The Bearcats turned to the transfer portal and added former Georgia Southern quarterback JC French IV, an experienced dual-threat passer who gives Cincinnati a proven option behind center.

French will also operate behind what could become the strength of the entire team: an experienced offensive line.

If Cincinnati’s new-look group of quarterbacks, running backs and receivers develops quickly, the Bearcats should once again field one of the more balanced offenses in the Big 12.

Quarterback Breakdown: JC French IV

JC French becomes the most important player on Cincinnati’s offense.

French arrives after starting at Georgia Southern, where he demonstrated the ability to produce both through the air and on the ground. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards with 20 touchdown passes last season while adding more than 300 rushing yards and six scores.

Those numbers make him an excellent stylistic fit for Satterfield’s offense.

French does not need to duplicate everything Sorsby accomplished. Cincinnati needs him to protect the football, distribute it efficiently and take advantage of opportunities with his legs.

One major advantage should be his offensive line.

Cincinnati was outstanding in pass protection last season, allowing only eight sacks in 13 games. If that protection continues, French should have plenty of opportunities to work through his progressions and attack defenses downfield.

Expect Cincinnati to continue utilizing designed quarterback runs, read-option concepts and scrambling opportunities.

JC French Projection: 2,800-2,900 passing yards, 22-24 passing touchdowns, 300-400 rushing yards and 5-6 rushing touchdowns.

Cincinnati Running Game Breakdown

Cincinnati’s rushing attack should remain one of the strongest elements of its offense.

The personnel may look different, but the Bearcats have multiple backs capable of contributing.

Louisiana transfer Zylan Perry brings proven experience after rushing for nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

Zion Johnson is one of Cincinnati’s most intriguing breakout candidates after flashing potential during limited opportunities as a freshman.

Former Notre Dame running back Gi’Bran Payne adds another experienced option to the rotation.

Rather than relying on one running back to carry the offense, Cincinnati should be able to rotate several players throughout the season.

French’s mobility gives the Bearcats another element defenses must account for.

The biggest reason to believe Cincinnati can remain an excellent rushing team, however, is the offensive line.

The Bearcats averaged nearly six yards per rushing attempt last season. If the line continues controlling the line of scrimmage, Cincinnati should once again finish among the more productive rushing teams in the conference.

Cincinnati Passing Game Breakdown

The passing game represents Cincinnati’s biggest offensive unknown.

The Bearcats brought in several transfers to rebuild the wide receiver room.

JV Gibson enters Cincinnati after producing more than 1,200 receiving yards and nine touchdowns at the FCS level.

Malachi Henry also brings substantial production after recording nearly 900 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

Returning receiver Isaiah Johnson gives Cincinnati another explosive option who already understands the offense.

The potential is obvious.

The concern is whether Cincinnati’s new receivers can produce similar results against Big 12 defensive backs.

French should benefit from having multiple capable targets rather than depending on one dominant receiver.

Cincinnati could also use its running game to create favorable matchups through play-action passing.

If the offensive line protects French and the transfer receivers adjust quickly, the Bearcats should approach 3,000 passing yards.

Cincinnati Bearcats 2026 Win Total

Cincinnati’s regular-season win total sits around 5.5 victories, making the Bearcats one of the more interesting teams to evaluate in the Big 12.

Getting to six wins is certainly achievable.

The early portion of the schedule gives Cincinnati an opportunity to build momentum before conference play becomes significantly more difficult.

The Bearcats face Boston College, Western Carolina and Miami (Ohio) early in the season. Starting 3-0 would put Cincinnati in excellent position to reach bowl eligibility.

The challenge comes later.

Cincinnati faces a difficult collection of Big 12 opponents, including games against Texas Tech, Utah, Arizona, Iowa State and BYU.

That means Cincinnati probably needs to take care of business against its more manageable opponents.

My projection has Cincinnati finishing 6-6, narrowly clearing the win total.

Why the Over Is a Good Bet

Cincinnati has a realistic opportunity to begin the season with several victories.

If the Bearcats can defeat Boston College, Western Carolina and Miami (Ohio), they could enter Big 12 play needing only three additional victories to become bowl eligible.

The offensive line is another reason to like the Over.

Experienced offensive lines provide consistency, particularly when breaking in a new quarterback and several new skill-position players.

French also gives Cincinnati something many rebuilding offenses lack: an experienced starting quarterback.

The Bearcats don’t need to challenge for the Big 12 championship for this wager to cash. They simply need to get to six wins.

Why the Under Is a Good Bet

Cincinnati’s conference schedule provides very little margin for error.

The Bearcats face several potential Big 12 contenders and have multiple difficult road games.

There is also considerable offensive turnover.

French may have starting experience, but adjusting to Big 12 competition will be a challenge. Cincinnati’s transfer receivers and running backs also have to prove they can consistently produce at this level.

An early upset loss could dramatically change the outlook.

Why the Over Is a Good Bet

French has already demonstrated that he can approach 3,000 passing yards over a full season.

He now joins a Cincinnati offense that should provide better pass protection than he experienced previously.

Cincinnati also added multiple productive transfer receivers who should give French options at every level of the field.

Game situations could help the Over as well.

The Bearcats will probably trail at times against some of the better teams on their schedule. That could force Cincinnati to increase its passing volume during the second half of games.

French doesn’t need a spectacular season to surpass 2,750 yards. He simply needs to stay healthy and average roughly 230 passing yards per game.

Why the Under Is a Good Bet

The biggest concern is the jump in competition.

French’s previous production came outside the Big 12. Defensive backs will be faster, pass rushes will be stronger and throwing windows will become smaller.

Cincinnati could also rely heavily on its rushing attack.

This is my favorite Cincinnati offensive prop.

Everything starts with the offensive line.

The Bearcats were extremely effective running the football last season and return enough experience up front to make the rushing attack Cincinnati’s offensive identity again.

Perry, Johnson and Payne give Cincinnati multiple capable running backs.

French adds another dimension because defenses must account for the quarterback on read-option plays and scrambles.

Cincinnati doesn’t need one running back to produce 1,200 yards.

If three running backs contribute and French adds 300-400 yards himself, Cincinnati can comfortably exceed 2,200 rushing yards.

Why the Under Is a Good Bet

There is still uncertainty in the backfield.

Cincinnati is replacing significant rushing production, and none of the current running backs has proven he can become a dominant Big 12 feature back.

Opponents may also crowd the line of scrimmage early in the season and challenge French to beat them through the air.

Game scripts could become a factor as well.

Cincinnati has enough offensive balance to score touchdowns in multiple ways.

French is a legitimate dual-threat quarterback who can create touchdowns through the air or with his legs.

The running back rotation should also give Cincinnati multiple options near the goal line.

Most importantly, the offensive line should provide the Bearcats with opportunities to convert short-yardage situations.

Cincinnati’s early-season schedule could also help build the touchdown total before the Bearcats reach the most difficult portion of Big 12 play.

Conclusion

The Cincinnati Bearcats enter 2026 with plenty of offensive questions, but this is far from a complete rebuild.

Replacing Brendan Sorsby will be difficult, but Cincinnati responded by adding an experienced quarterback rather than handing the offense to an unproven player.

That level of production should keep the Bearcats competitive throughout the Big 12 schedule and give Cincinnati a realistic opportunity to reach bowl eligibility.

The schedule prevents me from projecting a major breakthrough, but 6-6 appears achievable, with 7-5 representing a realistic ceiling if French and the transfer skill players exceed expectations.

From a betting perspective, I lean toward Cincinnati Over 5.5 wins, but the strongest wager is the Over on 2,199.5 team rushing yards.

Cincinnati’s offense may have a new quarterback and several new playmakers, but its identity should remain the same: protect the quarterback, establish the running game and use one of the team’s strongest offensive lines to control the football.
