Tuskegee Expands Red Tails Classic Ahead of West Alabama Opener

West Alabama players celebrate their victory in the Red Tails Classic at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., on Sunday August 30, 2026.

Tuskegee will open its 2026 football season against West Alabama on Sunday night, but the Red Tails Classic now covers more than the game. This year’s three-day schedule includes scholarship fundraising, employer meetings, STEM programming and a gala before the Golden Tigers kick off at Cramton Bowl on ESPN2.

The football game remains the centerpiece of the event. ESPN Events launched the Red Tails Classic in 2021 to honor the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, with the Golden Tigers competing in every edition. Sunday’s matchup marks the first time the classic features two Alabama-based programs. Last year, a raucous crowd of 15,000+ fans witnessed the Golden Tigers beat Winston-Salem State 20-17 at Cramton Bowl. This massive, loyal fanbase provides the university with a perfect captive audience to engage through its new off-the-field community and networking programs. You can check out our feature on how college football student sections can really have an impact on game-day atmosphere.

Tuskegee Extends Red Tails Weekend Beyond Football

The university’s aviation program provides a current link to the Airmen theme. On Wednesday, 13 Aviation Science students received bomber jackets after earning FAA certifications, with nine reaching the commercial pilot license level. The university operates an FAA-certificated Part 141 program for instrument and commercial pilot training. Aviation Science student Isaiah Hand, one of the students recognized, told WSFA, “We’re still just the beginning. We’ve got a long way to go.”

The published weekend schedule adds several other parts. Friday was set aside for a scholarship golf tournament, a workforce summit and meetings between students and corporate partners. Saturday’s schedule includes a K-12 STEM Exploration Day on the Montgomery riverfront, followed by a fundraising gala later in the evening. University president and CEO Dr. Mark A. Brown told WSFA the weekend “creates educational opportunities and a platform for supporters to learn more about the state-of-the-art preparation our students receive.” Sunday’s ESPN2 broadcast then puts the football program in front of a national audience.

Golden Tigers Need More From Their Offense

The Golden Tigers averaged 17.9 points per game last season, finished 4-7 overall and went 3-5 in SIAC play. They scored only four rushing touchdowns in 11 games. League coaches still picked them third in the 2026 preseason poll, behind Edward Waters and Benedict.

Athletic director Reginald Ruffin said in February that the schedule reflects “the strength of our brand, the power of tradition and the championship standard we expect from our student-athletes.” The immediate work is on offense. Wide receiver EJ Hall gives the group a proven big-play option after catching 30 passes for 681 yards and five touchdowns last season. His 22.7 yards per catch led the team and gives the Golden Tigers a way to create field position without relying on long drives.

West Alabama Brings a Stronger 2025 Offense

West Alabama enters the opener after averaging 34.0 points and 423.1 yards per game last season. The Tigers also led the Gulf South Conference with 198.6 rushing yards per game. They started 5-0 before losing their final four games and finished 5-4.

West Alabama also enters 2026 with changes on offense. Its official 2026 offensive preview notes that the Tigers lost starting quarterback Spencer Arceneaux, All-GSC receiver Dearrius Nelson, and two starting offensive linemen. Even so, 11 players were named to the preseason All-GSC team, including three offensive linemen. Head coach Scott Cochran told WTOK the Golden Tigers are “big, big and physical” and said the opener “is going to be a war for us.”

West Alabama’s run game gives the Golden Tigers’ defense an immediate test after it allowed 123.8 rushing yards per game last season. Defensive lineman Masiah Wells made 55 tackles, nine tackles for loss and four sacks and gives the front a proven returning piece. If West Alabama runs at its 2025 level, Wells and the rest of the front will have a lot to do to keep the game in control.

Sunday’s opener gives the Golden Tigers an early test against an opponent that averaged 34.0 points last season. The university has added several programs around the Red Tails Classic, but the football task is straightforward. The Golden Tigers need to show that last year’s scoring problems have improved enough to open 2026 with a win.
