After bringing in corner Eli Ricks from LSU, the Crimson Tide’s secondary was already outstanding; now it’s over-the-top great. Safety Jordan Battle and Brian Branch will work at the next level. Kool-Aid McKinstry, and Khyree Jackson, are both great corners. If his back problems are resolved, Malachi Moore will also be a special safety spot player. 2 LSU
Although the transfer portal takes away, it gives and gives more sometimes. Although losing star corner Eli Ricks was devastating, LSU was able to load up with at least six outstanding transfers: safeties Greg Brooks and Joe Foucha (Arkansas), corners Jarrick Bernard Converse (Oklahoma State), Mekhi Garner (Louisiana), Sevyn banks (Ohio State) and Quad Wilson (McNee State). These are all excellent transfers and should be used immediately around Jay Ward.
3 Notre Dame
The secondary could be the team’s greatest strength. Cam Hart and Clarence Lewis can dominate at the corners. There is depth, the safeties have experience, and Northwestern transfer Brandon Joseph may be the best safety in college football.
4 Texas A&M
Although Texas A&M’s defense has a lot of star prospects, it is still very young in the front six/seven. The secondary has key backups that are a bit green, but the starter five is very experienced and very good. Antonio Johnson and Demani Richardson are the safeties; they must keep the new guys away because the Aggies are loaded with great freshmen.
5 Georgia
The Bulldogs lost a lot in the secondary after last season, just like everywhere else. Kelee Ringo, the new legend who won the CFP title with his pick-six, is back in one corner. Christopher Smith is an NFL starting safety, and Tykee Smith will be a special-free safety if he can overcome his injuries.
6 Penn State
There is talent, but the pass rush must help. Joey Porter is the most prominent corner in the Big Ten. Safety JiAyir Brown, the top returning tackler, is the leading cornerback, while Kalen King is on the opposite side of Porter. The most recent recruiting class is also strong enough to get meaningful playing time.
7 Utah
This will be a great defensive backfield for the Pac-12, starting with Clark Phillips, a corner star, and Cole Bishop, a solid safety. Add in Clayton Isbell, formerly of Illinois State, at safety, and Sione Vaki, whose outstanding looks make it even more impressive. Check out the

8 Michigan
Although the Wolverine secondary is missing some major players from last year’s team, it still has DJ Turner at corner and safety, RJ Moten as its two most likely all-stars. There was also enough rotation to allow for new starters. Although the team’s depth is young, it has a lot of talent.
