The Texas A@M Offense Is Less Settled Than It Looks

Returning production is the number everyone reaches for in August, and Texas A&M looks comfortable by that measure. ESPN’s model puts the Aggies at around 65 percent, which reads like a program bringing back the pieces that won 11 games and reached its first College Football Playoff. The number is accurate. It is also hiding the three things about the Texas A&M offense most likely to determine the season.

Marcel Reed is back to anchor the offense. Mario Craver returns, and Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton joins what analysts rate among the deeper receiver rotations in the country. What did not return is almost the entire wall in front of them, along with the coordinator who designed everything they ran.

Marcel Reed Struggled Against the Defenses That Mattered

Reed started all 13 games last season and completed 234 of 377 throws for 3,169 yards with 25 touchdowns, adding 493 rushing yards and six more scores. He now sits ninth nationally in QBR at 77.6. While some opposing coordinators still harbor doubts about his consistency, anyone watching that production seriously questions whether he belongs in the playoff conversation.

The 12 interceptions complicate it, though the raw total matters less than where they landed. Eight of the 12 came against top-35 defenses, and against that same group Reed threw only six touchdown passes. Two picks came in the 27-17 loss at Texas while two more came in a tight 10-3 playoff exit against Miami. High-caliber defenses have already shown they can make him uncomfortable.

Four New Linemen Reshape the Texas A&M Offense

Reed’s margin shrinks further because of who is blocking. Center Mark Nabou is the only returning starter from a line that protected an 11-win team. Wilkin Formby arrives from Alabama, where he started 14 games last season, with Tyree Adams coming from LSU and Trovon Baugh from South Carolina.

None of that reads like a bad line. Individually, they have all played real Power Four football. The complication is that individual experience and offensive-line experience are not the same thing [five linemen have to think as one, and none of these five has done it together]. A guard can be technically correct and still miss a stunt because the tackle beside him read the front differently.

Holmon Wiggins Inherits Both Problems

Somebody has to design an offense around a quarterback who presses against good defenses and a line still learning its own language. Holmon Wiggins drew the assignment. He joined Mike Elko’s staff in 2024 as co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach, then took full control after Collin Klein left for the Kansas State head job.

Wiggins is not a rookie coach. He coached receivers at Alabama under Nick Saban and has been in the profession since his playing days at New Mexico ended. He has simply never carried primary play-calling duties at this level. Experience as a coach and experience as a play-caller are different jobs, and 2026 is the first time he holds the second one.

Separately, none of those three things is alarming. Reed is a good quarterback with a correctable flaw, the linemen have all played at this level, and Wiggins has been around good offenses for years [each problem has a reasonable answer on its own]. Stacked into the same season, they explain why returning production works poorly as a measure of stability. The Texas A&M offense returns talent in quantity. What left with the old line and the old coordinator was the accumulated familiarity that turned that talent into 11 wins.

Why Ole Miss Should Watch Closely

SEC media picked Ole Miss third and Texas A&M fourth, which means the Rebels and Aggies are chasing the same handful of playoff spots. Ole Miss brings back more continuity up front, and its defensive line got better through the portal, the sort of front that punishes a protection still figuring itself out. Every Aggie stumble opens a lane for somebody, and Ole Miss is standing directly in it.

Reed has not thrown an interception through the first six preseason practices, the sort of detail that only means something in hindsight. Elko’s team has more than enough talent to make all of this work, which is what makes the uncertainty interesting rather than damning. September will start telling everyone whether the pieces underneath the stars have learned to move together.
