In a defensive slugfest, No. 3 Ohio State upset No. 1 Texas, 14–7, holding star QB Arch Manning to a late lone touchdown. Ohio State’s defense, in particular, dominated—resetting expectations for a unit that lost top personnel from last year. This was a game that Texas could have easily won, but once again in a big situation, the Longhorns came up short. This game showcased two of the best defenses in College Football. Both teams have to be concerned about their respective situations at the Quarterback position.
Florida State stunned No. 8 Alabama in a convincing 31–17 upset, demonstrating dominance on both lines. QB Tommy Castellanos led an offensive masterclass, and the defense stifled the Tide’s efforts. This result raises serious questions about where Alabama is heading under coach Kalen DeBoer; one analyst bluntly summarized: “This isn’t Saban’s Crimson Tide.”. The Crimson Tide is no longer feared, and the Seminoles look like they are back after a dreadful 2024 season.
LSU began the season with a 17–10 win over No. 4 Clemson, marking their first season-opening victory since 2019. Their offensive line held strong, the defense looked stout, and their “1‑0 mentality”—emphasizing mental toughness and composure—stood out. Maybe this will be the year Brian Kelly gets over the hump, but I doubt it.
Penn State looked formidable in their opener—running game, defense, and especially wide receivers Kyron Hudson and Trebor Peña impressed, both airing off with huge receptions early in the game. On defense, Dani Dennis‑Sutton made game-changing plays, including forced fumbles and a sack. Syre the opponent was not awe-inspiring, but Penn State is loaded and if James Franklin can’t get it done with this group, he may never get it done.
Michigan handed the starting QB duties to true freshman Bryce Underwood, and he responded in style—21/31 for 251 yards and a touchdown, becoming Michigan’s first freshman QB to set a debut passing yardage record. Yet, defensive concerns persist despite the 34–17 win over New Mexico.
UCF, under the returning Scott Frost and redshirt senior QB Cam Fancher, edged out Jacksonville State 17–10 in a dramatic finish—winning on a late 33-yard TD by Tayven Jackson after an injury to Fancher.
Texas A&M boasted a dominant performance with former transfers shining: QB Marcel Reed threw four touchdowns, and WRs KC Concepcion plus Mario Craver were explosive in a 42–24 win.
South Florida delivered one of the most notable upsets with a commanding 34–7 win over No. 25 Boise State—signaling potential for a breakout season.
Big Ten teams delivered a mixed bag:
Rutgers escaped with a 34–31 win over Ohio despite defensive issues.
Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue, and others had varying degrees of success—Purdue even notched its first FBS win since 2023.
Northwestern’s 23–3 loss to Tulane raised red flags early on.
The opener offered rich ground for NFL evaluation—matchups like LSU-Clemson and Texas-Ohio State drew significant attention, as scouts scanned the field for future draft picks. The glaring issue is that the quarterbacks did not impress at all in any of the week one showcase games.
