Updated October 18, 2026 — following Week 7

The SEC’s championship race became considerably more complicated Saturday.

Auburn stunned Georgia in Athens. Tennessee controlled Alabama. Florida handed Texas another damaging defeat. Meanwhile, Ole Miss and LSU delivered dominant performances, and Kentucky continued building one of the conference’s most impressive winning streaks.

Georgia narrowly retains the top position here, but the separation has shrunk. Tennessee, Ole Miss and Kentucky all have credible arguments for moving higher.

These rankings weigh the full season alongside recent performance, opponent quality and head-to-head results. They are editorial power rankings, not the conference standings. Records include all games completed October 17.

16. Vanderbilt Commodores

Record: 3–4 overall, 0–4 SEC Saturday: Lost to Arkansas 31–21

Vanderbilt remains last after losing at home to an Arkansas team searching for its first conference victory. The Commodores needed this opportunity to interrupt their SEC slide. Instead, Arkansas left Nashville with a breakthrough.

At this point, Vanderbilt must establish that it can finish a conference game before there is a compelling argument for moving it higher. Competitive possessions and occasional offensive success have not translated into results. The Commodores need more dependable defensive execution and fewer stretches in which opponents take control.

15. Arkansas Razorbacks

Record: 3–4 overall, 1–3 SEC Saturday: Beat Vanderbilt 31–21

Arkansas finally has a conference victory under Ryan Silverfield. Saturday’s win ended a 14-game SEC losing streak, making it significant for a program that badly needed evidence of progress.

Winning on the road deserves recognition, even against the conference’s bottom team. The Razorbacks must now turn that result into something sustainable. One victory does not erase their earlier problems, but it gives the players a tangible reward for their work and creates a foundation for the remainder of the season.

14. Texas A&M Aggies

Record: 4–3 overall, 1–3 SEC Saturday: Beat The Citadel 41–0

Texas A&M handled its nonconference assignment, shutting out The Citadel at Kyle Field. It was a productive afternoon, but the opponent limits how much the result changes the Aggies’ position.

A&M stays above Arkansas partly because it beat the Razorbacks 34–7 earlier this month. However, its conference performances remain the larger concern. A comfortable victory over an FCS opponent cannot resolve the problems exposed against stronger competition. The Aggies need their next meaningful step to come against an SEC team.

13. Oklahoma Sooners

Record: 3–3 overall, 1–2 SEC Saturday: Lost to Kentucky 21–13

Oklahoma followed its victory over Texas with a frustrating home loss. Kentucky intercepted John Mateer four times, repeatedly ending opportunities for the Sooners to establish control.

The defense gave Oklahoma a chance, but the offense could not protect possession well enough to capitalize. That inconsistency explains this position. The Sooners have demonstrated they can beat a talented opponent, yet they have not produced reliable offensive football across consecutive games. Until that changes, the Texas victory remains a high point rather than proof of a turnaround.

12. South Carolina Gamecocks

Record: 3–3 overall, 1–3 SEC Saturday: Bye

South Carolina’s most recent performance remains encouraging: a 38–19 road victory over Florida, with LaNorris Sellers accounting for five touchdowns. The Gamecocks entered their open date with a result worth building around.

Florida’s subsequent victory at Texas makes that performance look even more substantial. However, South Carolina’s overall conference record still matters. The Gamecocks need to show that their offensive execution in Gainesville can become a repeatable standard. Their ceiling is higher than this ranking, but climbing requires sustained production.

11. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Record: 4–2 overall, 2–2 SEC Saturday: Lost to LSU 31–0

Mississippi State suffered one of Saturday’s harshest results, although the circumstances deserve acknowledgment. The Bulldogs played without quarterback Kamario Taylor and leading rusher Fluff Bothwell, leaving the offense severely depleted against LSU.

Those absences help explain the shutout. They do not make the performance irrelevant. Mississippi State’s current offensive uncertainty pushes it down this week, despite earlier accomplishments. Getting healthy could change the assessment quickly, but the Bulldogs need to demonstrate that they can remain competitive when their preferred offensive pieces are unavailable.

10. Texas Longhorns

Record: 4–2 overall, 1–2 SEC Saturday: Lost to Florida 27–24

Texas has gone from a national frontrunner to a team confronting consecutive defeats. The Longhorns led Florida 17–3 before losing at home, wasting a strong position for the second straight week.

Steve Sarkisian and Arch Manning share responsibility for finding answers. Texas has enough talent to recover, but these rankings cannot continue rewarding expectations while the results deteriorate. The Longhorns need better offensive execution after halftime and a more dependable response when opponents begin taking away their initial advantages.

9. Missouri Tigers

Record: 5–2 overall, 2–2 SEC Saturday: Lost to Ole Miss 31–3

Missouri’s trip to Oxford produced a substantial setback. Ole Miss held the Tigers to three points and controlled the ground game, outrushing Missouri 257–39. That is a decisive physical defeat.

The Tigers retain a place above the lower tier because their season includes meaningful success. Saturday, however, exposed a gap between Missouri and a team playing much sharper football. Missouri must restore its rushing threat and produce better answers when the opponent forces it away from its preferred offensive approach.

8. Alabama Crimson Tide

Record: 5–2 overall, 3–2 SEC Saturday: Lost to Tennessee 26–10

Alabama’s second consecutive defeat was more concerning than its narrow loss to Georgia. Tennessee limited the Crimson Tide to 201 total yards, and Alabama failed to score after halftime.

Kalen DeBoer’s team still has earlier victories that deserve weight, including its convincing win at Kentucky. But current performance matters in a power ranking, and Alabama’s offense is trending in the wrong direction. The Tide need cleaner execution and a stronger response to defensive pressure before they can reclaim a place near the top.

7. LSU Tigers

Record: 5–2 overall, 2–2 SEC Saturday: Beat Mississippi State 31–0

LSU delivered the response Lane Kiffin needed. The Tigers shut out Mississippi State, while Sam Leavitt threw four touchdown passes. The Bulldogs’ injuries qualify the result, but LSU still deserves credit for taking control and maintaining it.

The next challenge is consistency. LSU has demonstrated a capacity for dominant football, yet its defeats against Ole Miss and Kentucky prevent a larger jump. Saturday moves the Tigers ahead of a struggling Alabama team in this assessment, but they must reproduce that execution against healthier, more complete opposition.

6. Auburn Tigers

Record: 4–2 overall, 2–2 SEC Saturday: Beat Georgia 27–24

Auburn earned the weekend’s biggest SEC victory. Alex McPherson’s 34-yard field goal as time expired finished a stunning win over the nation’s top-ranked team in Athens.

That result substantially raises the assessment of Alex Golesh’s team. Auburn showed it could handle a difficult environment and finish a game against elite opposition. The Tigers remain below Florida and Tennessee, both of which beat them earlier this season, but Saturday establishes a much more dangerous ceiling. The task now is making that standard repeatable.

5. Florida Gators

Record: 5–2 overall, 3–2 SEC Saturday: Beat Texas 27–24

Florida stopped its slide with an impressive comeback in Austin. The Gators recovered from a 17–3 deficit and produced the offensive scores and defensive stops necessary to finish the upset.

Jon Sumrall’s team remains difficult to place because its best performances have been excellent and its defeats have been damaging. Florida owns victories over Auburn, Ole Miss and Texas, but consecutive losses to Missouri and South Carolina still weigh heavily. Fifth reflects both its demonstrated upside and its inconsistency.

4. Kentucky Wildcats

Record: 6–1 overall, 4–1 SEC Saturday: Beat Oklahoma 21–13

Kentucky keeps finding answers. The Wildcats won in Norman behind an opportunistic defense, with Jordan Castell and Ty Bryant recording two interceptions apiece. Castell’s late interception return for a touchdown provided crucial separation.

The offense still has room to improve, but Kentucky is collecting the victories that turn an encouraging season into a serious conference campaign. The Wildcats’ resilience deserves recognition. They have earned a place among the SEC’s leading contenders, and another strong performance would make the argument for moving them higher increasingly persuasive.

3. Ole Miss Rebels

Record: 5–1 overall, 3–1 SEC Saturday: Beat Missouri 31–3

Ole Miss produced one of the weekend’s most complete performances. The Rebels controlled Missouri on the ground, generated substantial rushing production and held a ranked opponent to a single field goal. Kewan Lacy rushed for 122 yards.

The earlier defeat at Florida remains significant, but Ole Miss has responded with consecutive convincing conference victories. The defense’s performance against Missouri is especially encouraging. If that improvement holds, the Rebels become a more balanced threat than a team dependent on winning offensive exchanges. They are firmly in the championship race.

2. Georgia Bulldogs

Record: 6–1 overall, 4–1 SEC Saturday: Lost to Auburn 27–24

Georgia drops to second, but this is a narrow judgment based on its full season rather than Saturday’s performance. The Bulldogs suffered a costly home defeat when Auburn won on the final play, ending Georgia’s unbeaten start.

The previous week’s victory at Alabama still carries weight, and one three-point defeat does not erase the Bulldogs’ broader accomplishments. However, Georgia has surrendered the comfortable separation it previously enjoyed. The execution must improve, and the response must be immediate.

1. Tennessee Volunteers

Record: 6–1 overall, 3–1 SEC Saturday: Beat Alabama 26–10

Tennessee climbs to second after a convincing rivalry victory. The Volunteers controlled Alabama defensively and kept the Crimson Tide scoreless throughout the second half. That performance supplied the strongest argument yet for Tennessee’s place among the conference’s best.

The Volunteers still must demonstrate that their offense can produce consistently against top opponents. But a team capable of dictating a game with its defense has a credible championship foundation. Tennessee is close enough to Georgia that another strong week—or another Bulldogs stumble—could change the order at the top.
