If it sounds childish, it is. Jimbo Fisher has been acting as if he were a child whenever someone asks about A&M’s tops in-the-nation 2022 recruiting class. After a fake poster claimed that Aggies coaches had directed boosters to arrange $30M in NIL deals to incoming prospects, Fisher called out the name SlicedBread who posted the allegations. This is an example of a coach with thin skin who uses a shovel to get to the bottom. Fisher has a history of cheating as the Aggies did get in trouble in 2020 and punished, but hey that just gets in the way of Fisher’s self-righteous indignation.
Fisher suggested that Saban was mad just because the Aggies could over-take the Crimson Tide and Saban’s whining does sound like sour grapes from a man in Saban who is used to getting his way. Let’s face it Fisher and Saban always get their way because they are paid to win and they both are very good at it. Maybe! It’s possible! NIL will undoubtedly transform college football. It doesn’t matter if the new reality is as bad as Saban suggests or if it is in line with the spirit and letter of the rule. It could be a huge boost for A&M where any four-star recruit could have a moment as the face of a Bryan-College Station doughnut shop or car dealership.
The most telling aspect of the Saban Fisher spat is that it doesn’t really matter. It’s just for fun, a grab-the-popcorn moment in which the stakes are all about which $100million coach may or not be in violation of arbitrary rules that were created by the NCAA after the Supreme Court ruled that the old way of doing business violated players’ rights (which everyone who follows college sports business knows). By the way, the NCAA is fine with NIL deals because it means they won’t have to pay the players out of their Billions of dollars of TV revenue. Check out the top sportsbooks!
The stakes were high when Jimbo Fisher complained about his “reputation being taken a hit” by his support of Jameis Winston, a quarterback who was accused of sexual assault. Because he ignored the woman who had accused him, his lashing out was a poor reflection on him. Fisher claimed that Winston “did nothing wrong” and called her a liar. (A year later, Saban reacted similarly in response to allegations of abuse against an Alabama football player.
So what we really have here is two rich assholes who have shown a tendency to lean towards the ends justifying the means of throwing rocks at each other’s glasshouses. These two men have shown through past actions that it’s all about them.
