Big Ten play begins with a late-night matchup in Pasadena as 1-1 Purdue visits 2-0 UCLA.
Purdue is coming off a heartbreaking 38-36 double-overtime loss to Wake Forest. Quarterback Ryan Browne had a career day, completing 32 of 42 passes for 329 yards, while running back Fame Ijeboi rushed for a career-high 114 yards and three touchdowns. Purdue actually outgained Wake Forest 455-411.
UCLA has opened the Bob Chesney era with victories over California and San Diego State. The Bruins beat SDSU 28-10, with Wayne Knight rushing for 97 yards and three touchdowns. Knight has already scored six rushing touchdowns in two games. Nico Iamaleava finished 14-of-22 for 151 yards against the Aztecs.
The market is hovering around UCLA -14 to -14.5, while totals range from 52.5 to 53.
Exact college player props may vary by sportsbook. The numbers below are projected betting targets unless your book lists them.
Browne has surpassed 300 passing yards in both games this season, including his career-high 329 against Wake Forest.
If UCLA plays from ahead as the spread suggests, Purdue should spend much of the second half throwing.
Projected Bet: Ryan Browne Over 274.5 Passing Yards
Knight rushed for 71 yards at Cal before posting 97 yards on 13 carries against San Diego State.
UCLA has leaned heavily on its rushing attack, especially after halftime. Knight should remain the centerpiece.
Projected Bet: Wayne Knight Over 69.5 Rushing Yards
Morgan produced career highs with six catches for 73 yards against San Diego State and made several key plays during UCLA’s second-half surge.
Purdue just allowed Wake Forest to generate 411 total yards, so Morgan should have opportunities.
Projected Bet: Semaj Morgan Over 49.5 Receiving Yards
Purdue has scored 80 points through two games, while UCLA has scored 73. Purdue’s offense looks capable of contributing enough points to push this game beyond the total.
UCLA’s powerful rushing attack should also consistently threaten the red zone.
Bet: Over 52.5 Points
Ryan Browne, QB, Purdue: Coming off a career-high 329 passing yards and has topped 300 yards twice already.
Fame Ijeboi, RB, Purdue: Has rushed for more than 200 yards and scored four touchdowns through his first two Purdue games.
Asaad Waseem, WR, Purdue: Opened the season with six catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Nico Iamaleava, QB, UCLA: Has guided the Bruins to consecutive victories under Chesney.
Wayne Knight, RB, UCLA: Six rushing touchdowns in two games after scoring three against both Cal and SDSU.
Semaj Morgan, WR, UCLA: Coming off six receptions for 73 yards against San Diego State.
Purdue must protect Browne and finish drives. The Boilermakers showed against Wake Forest that they can move the football, but their defense struggled to make the decisive stop in overtime.
Ijeboi also needs enough rushing success to prevent UCLA from simply attacking Browne with pressure.
UCLA should continue pounding the football with Knight, Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas.
Defensively, forcing Purdue into third-and-long situations will be important because Browne has been extremely efficient when allowed to operate comfortably.
This is UCLA and Purdue’s first meeting as Big Ten opponents. UCLA owns a 3-0-2 all-time series advantage, although the programs have not met since 1980. Purdue’s last appearance in Pasadena was the 2001 Rose Bowl.
UCLA deserves to be favored, but 14.5 points feels high against a Purdue offense that just produced 455 yards and nearly knocked off Wake Forest.
The Bruins should win behind their running game, but Browne gives Purdue enough passing firepower to stay competitive.
Expect UCLA to establish Knight early and gradually wear down Purdue’s defense, while Browne keeps the Boilermakers within striking distance through the air.
UCLA wins its Big Ten opener, but Purdue stays inside the two-touchdown-plus spread.
Final Score Prediction: UCLA 34, Purdue 24
Best Bet: Purdue +14.5
Total Pick: Over 52.5
