Notre Dame and Wisconsin begin their 2026 seasons with a primetime Sunday showdown at historic Lambeau Field.

Notre Dame and Wisconsin begin their 2026 seasons with a primetime Sunday showdown at historic Lambeau Field.

The Shamrock Series matchup marks Notre Dame’s first appearance at Lambeau and Wisconsin’s first game at the stadium since defeating fifth-ranked LSU 16-14 in 2016. The programs last met at Soldier Field in 2021, when the Fighting Irish pulled away for a 41-13 victory.

Notre Dame enters the season as one of the leading contenders for the College Football Playoff. Marcus Freeman’s team finished 10-2 last season, with its only two defeats coming by a combined four points. The Fighting Irish return 17 starters from an offense that averaged 41.8 points per game and a defense expected to rank among the nation’s best.

Quarterback CJ Carr returns after passing for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns in his first season as the starter. Carr threw at least one touchdown pass in all 12 games and produced nine performances with multiple touchdown passes. His experience gives Notre Dame an enormous advantage over a Wisconsin program undergoing another extensive reconstruction.

Wisconsin enters Luke Fickell’s fourth season after adding more than 30 transfers. The most important addition is former Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph, the reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year. Joseph passed for more than 2,600 yards and rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season.

Notre Dame’s Most Important Advantages

  • Quarterback experience: Carr started all 12 games and threw 24 touchdown passes last season.
  • Offensive continuity: Notre Dame returns most of the core from one of the country’s highest-scoring offenses.
  • Elite defense: The Fighting Irish possess experienced talent at every defensive level.
  • Offensive line: Notre Dame should have a significant advantage in the trenches.
  • Roster depth: Freeman’s team is deeper and more established than Wisconsin.
  • Recent success: Notre Dame finished 10-2 and came extremely close to reaching the College Football Playoff.

Wisconsin is attempting to recover after another disappointing season under Fickell. The Badgers added transfers throughout the roster, creating the possibility of improvement but also producing major questions about chemistry and continuity.

Joseph gives Wisconsin a dynamic dual-threat quarterback capable of extending plays and creating rushing yards when protection breaks down. Iowa State transfer Abu Sama III should also contribute to a running game that Wisconsin must establish to have any opportunity to remain competitive.

The Badgers possess two excellent linebackers in Cooper Catalano and Mason Posa. They were Wisconsin’s leading tacklers last season despite both beginning the year as freshmen. Their ability to contain Carr and limit Notre Dame’s running game will be critical.

Wisconsin’s Keys to Remaining Competitive

  • Run the football: Wisconsin must shorten the game and limit Notre Dame’s possessions.
  • Use Joseph’s mobility: Designed quarterback runs could create problems for the Irish defense.
  • Protect the football: Wisconsin cannot give Notre Dame short fields through turnovers.
  • Limit explosive plays: The Badgers must prevent Carr from connecting on deep passes.
  • Control the clock: Long drives would keep Notre Dame’s offense on the sideline.
  • Pressure Carr: Catalano and Posa must disrupt Notre Dame’s offensive rhythm.

Prediction Market #1: Notre Dame to Win Outright

Kalshi displayed Notre Dame’s outright-winner contract at approximately 93¢, with traders assigning the Fighting Irish an implied probability near 91%. Polymarket placed Notre Dame’s probability at approximately 93%, with the purchase price reflecting that overwhelming market confidence.

The displayed prices were extremely close, but Polymarket offered a slightly more favorable price for a Notre Dame victory when the markets were reviewed.

Notre Dame has major advantages in roster talent, continuity, quarterback experience and overall depth. Wisconsin should improve with Joseph leading the offense, but the Badgers must integrate more than 30 transfers while immediately facing one of the country’s strongest teams.

Lambeau Field should produce a relatively balanced crowd, but Notre Dame is officially the home team in this Shamrock Series matchup. The Fighting Irish should be comfortable in the environment and prepared for the attention surrounding the game.

Why Notre Dame Should Win

  • Notre Dame returns 17 starters from a 10-win team.
  • Carr is an established quarterback and potential national award candidate.
  • Wisconsin is attempting to integrate more than 30 transfers.
  • Notre Dame owns a significant advantage along both lines of scrimmage.
  • The Fighting Irish averaged 41.8 points per game last season.
  • Notre Dame’s defense should make Wisconsin’s offensive transition extremely difficult.
  • Prediction: Notre Dame wins outright
  • More favorable displayed price: Polymarket at approximately 92¢

Prediction Market #2: Notre Dame to Cover the 20.5-Point Spread

The point-spread market presents a more difficult decision. Kalshi priced Notre Dame to win by more than 20.5 points at approximately 49¢, representing an implied probability near 48%. Polymarket traders gave Notre Dame approximately a 54% probability of covering the spread.

Because the lower purchase price is preferable when comparing contracts tied to the same outcome, Kalshi offered the more favorable displayed price for Notre Dame to cover 20.5 points.

Wisconsin’s best path to remaining competitive is using Joseph and Sama to establish the running game. That approach could shorten the game, but it will become difficult to maintain if Notre Dame creates an early two-score advantage.

Notre Dame’s defense should eventually force Wisconsin into obvious passing situations. That will allow the Fighting Irish’s defensive front to pressure Joseph and potentially create turnovers or short fields for Carr.

The spread is large for a season opener played at a neutral venue, but the difference in roster quality is substantial. Notre Dame’s offensive continuity and defensive strength should allow the Fighting Irish to create separation during the second half.

Why Notre Dame Can Cover the Spread

  • Notre Dame possesses a major talent and depth advantage.
  • Wisconsin is installing an offense around a new quarterback.
  • Carr leads an offense that averaged more than 40 points per game last season.
  • The Irish defense should limit Wisconsin’s scoring opportunities.
  • Wisconsin’s rebuilt offensive line faces an immediate challenge.
  • Notre Dame defeated Wisconsin by 28 points in the teams’ previous meeting.
  • Wisconsin may struggle if forced to abandon its running game.
  • Prediction: Notre Dame covers 20.5 points
  • More favorable displayed price: Kalshi at approximately 49¢

Players to Watch

  • CJ Carr, Notre Dame: The returning starter passed for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns last season.
  • Colton Joseph, Wisconsin: The Old Dominion transfer gives the Badgers a dangerous dual-threat quarterback.
  • Aneyas Williams, Notre Dame: Williams takes on a larger role after the departures of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.
  • Cooper Catalano, Wisconsin: The productive linebacker must help Wisconsin control Notre Dame’s rushing attack.
  • Leonard Moore, Notre Dame: The standout cornerback leads one of the country’s strongest defensive backfields.
  • Mason Posa, Wisconsin: The young linebacker gives the Badgers another disruptive defensive presence.
  • Drayk Bowen, Notre Dame: Bowen’s ability to contain Joseph will be critical against Wisconsin’s designed quarterback runs.
  • Abu Sama III, Wisconsin: The Iowa State transfer must help the Badgers establish the running game.

The Verdict

  • Score Prediction: Notre Dame 38, Wisconsin 13
  • Outright-Winner Prediction: Notre Dame
  • Point-Spread Prediction: Notre Dame -20.5
  • More Favorable Outright-Winner Price: Polymarket
  • More Favorable Point-Spread Price: Kalshi
  • Most Important Matchup: Wisconsin’s offensive line against Notre Dame’s defensive front
  • Biggest Unknown: How quickly Wisconsin’s transfer-heavy roster can develop chemistry

Notre Dame has the better quarterback, the stronger offensive line, the deeper defense and considerably more continuity. Joseph’s mobility could help Wisconsin create several early drives, but the Badgers will have difficulty consistently moving the football against the Fighting Irish defense.

Carr and the Notre Dame offense should gradually take control, while Wisconsin’s rebuilt roster struggles to keep pace. Expect the Fighting Irish to turn a competitive opening quarter into a comfortable season-opening victory at Lambeau Field.

Prediction market trading involves financial risk and may not be appropriate for everyone. Contract prices can change before the game, and participants can lose the full amount used to purchase a contract.
