College football likes to say you have to prove yourself every Saturday, but North Dakota State’s old FBS proof came only when those games appeared on the schedule. The Bison went 9-5 against FBS opponents while in FCS, including wins over Iowa and Kansas State. Saturday against Jacksonville State removes the temporary nature of the test. NDSU remains an FBS program when the game ends, and the standard now has to survive the following week too.

The Bison leave the subdivision with a 251-49 record across 22 seasons and 10 national championships, but their final year ended 12-1 after Illinois State eliminated them by one point (NDSU made 16 consecutive playoff appearances). Tim Polasek takes a program upward while its old model is still winning. ā€œWe’re excited to be moving up, and the time was right. It’s just an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,ā€ he told the Associated Press before the opener.

North Dakota State Must Make Its Old Formula Travel

Most of the formula remains recognizable. Griffin Empey, a preseason All-Mountain West guard, returns on a line with three starters back, while fifth-year quarterback Nathan Hayes makes his first career start. The FCS years produced 21 NFL draft picks, evidence that NDSU developed NFL-caliber players before changing labels

Hayes made the ambition plain at Mountain West Media Days: ā€œWe didn’t come to the Mountain West to just scrape by, win a few games. We came to compete.ā€

The move changes more than the logo on the schedule. NDSU added 22 football scholarships, while AP says football expenses roughly doubled from about $8 million in 2025. Eight Mountain West games replace the occasional FBS test. We can admire the 9-5 record without pretending those games asked the same question, because none required another FBS recovery week seven days later. (The NCAA changed transition rules in June, allowing reclassifying FBS teams to reach bowls and the CFP if otherwise eligible).

For wider context, the Mountain West’s 2026 rebuild shows why the Bison entered a league reshaping itself around new football members. The more useful comparison arrives in Fargo. Jacksonville State moved from FCS three years ago and already has three straight nine-win FBS seasons, three bowl trips and the 2024 Conference USA championship. Their transition gives NDSU something better than theory: a recent example of an FCS winner building repeatable successes at the next level.

Jacksonville State Already Lived This Transition

Asked this week about the national television window, Fargo atmosphere and NDSU’s move, Jacksonville State coach Charles Kelly treated the opener Saturday afternoon as a football meeting between established programs. ā€œIt’s two great institutions that have years and years of winning, and it’s a great opportunity for both schools.ā€

His quarterback makes the comparison physical. Caden Creel produced seven 100-yard rushing games last season, tied for the most among FBS quarterbacks, testing NDSU’s run fits, tackling and edge discipline.

The history makes the matchup cleaner without predicting the result. NDSU beat Jacksonville State 37-10 for the 2015 FCS national championship, although the Gamecocks lead the series 2-1. A decade later, Jacksonville State owns the FBS experience while Hayes takes his first snap as a college starter. Saturday begins showing something more useful: how much of NDSU’s old advantage travels when scholarship depth and weekly recovery belong to both sides.

The Fargodome Starts a Different Weekly Standard

One part of North Dakota State’s identity needs no transition period. The Bison are 205-30 in the Fargodome since it opened in 1993, with 27 straight home-opening wins (the building can host FBS Football without a capacity or attendance upgrade). The crowd, development system, and veteran core explain why NDSU believes it can compete immediately. Still, one result cannot answer whether the roster remains as physical in October after weeks of FBS contact.

Let us think about Sunday. Jacksonville State leaves Fargo, the film loads, and Fordham arrives the following weekend before NDSU travels to Air Force for its first Mountain West conference game. A win Saturday would look familiar to anyone who remembers Iowa or Kansas State. The real change begins after the celebration, when recovery, corrections, and another opponent arrive before the first answer has much time to settle. NDSU used to get one FBS test. Its schedule keeps asking every week.
