No Redshirt Rule Left to Protect Ohio State’s 51 Newcomers

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin (10) looks to pass during football training camp inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in Columbus on Aug. 7, 2026.

The oldest idea in college football is that a young player needs a year before anyone begins to ask anything serious of him. “Put some weight on! Learn the language! Watch a senior do it properly!” The reshirt rule made that year cost nothing. The NCAA has taken most of that protection away, leaving Ohio State in an interesting position. The Buckeyes opened fall camp with 51 players who have never taken a snap for a program.

College Football Just Changed the Math

The old system gave an athlete at least four seasons of competition within a five-year window. Football sharpened it in 2018, when a player could appear in up to four games and still keep the year. A freshman could get three snaps in November, learn something, and it cost his program nothing.

The Division I Cabinet voted that arrangement out in June. The new age-based eligibility model gives an athlete five years on the clock starting when he enrolls or the academic year after his 19th birthday. Season of competition limits, redshirt rules, and eligibility extension waivers all went with it. The legislation took effect Aug 1.

The landing is gradual, and anyone enrolling this fall gets whichever model treats him better, and the class arriving in fall 2027 will be the first governed entirely by the new one. Ryan Day is not sitting around to wait for 2027.

Ohio State Has Little Room for Patience

The Buckeyes lost 11 players to the NFL Draft and another 30-plus to the transfer portal, costing them 12 starters and eight of the 11 who lined up first on defense. They answered with volume. Fifty-one newcomers is not simply a turnover figure (it is 51 people learning the same terminology and the same standard at once).

Kenyatta Jackson Jr., the only returning starter on the defensive line, described what that felt like after spring practice. “In the beginning, it was really rough,” Jackson said. “With 51 new players coming into the program, it was really rough to try to lead by example and teach those guys the standard of Ohio State Football.” Jackson is in his fifth year in Columbus because he redshirted as a freshman (the exact mechanism the newcomers he is teaching will not get).

Chris Henry Jr. shows why it matters. The five-star receiver arrived from Mater Dei at 6ft 5 and 195 pounds, a frame that once bought a season in the weight room. Day said in late July that Henry had a strong offseason and had put muscle on. Henry plays either way (the harder question is what happens to the freshmen nobody ranked).

Asked about Henry and freshman Brock Boyd after the first camp practice, Day skipped the developmental language. “Well, everybody is playing now. The whole redshirt idea doesn’t exist moving forward,” Day said. “So, first off, everybody in the program should have the idea that they’re fighting for positions, fighting for playing time and want to get on the field.” That is a coach telling 51 people the evaluation has started.

Jay Timmons proves it reaches past the offense: the freshman corner already taking first-team reps at nickel for the job Lorenzo Styles left open.

Development Outlives the Redshirt Rule

The NCAA wanted a rulebook it could administer without arguing every case. Josh Whitman, the Illinois athletic director who chaired the Cabinet, said so when the model passed. “For campus officials and coaches, this change provides rules that are simpler to administer and easier to predict for roster management decisions,” Whitman said.

Simpler does not necessarily mean that every freshman will be playing. The best player still wins the job, and a teenager who cannot block will watch from the sideline. What went away is the penalty attached to finding out. Development moves into games instead of a protected year (the pressure to prove a freshman helps has not gone anywhere).

Programs used to ask whether they could afford to use a young player’s season. That question is leaving the sport. The one replacing it is whether he helps, and 51 newcomers mean that Day will provide an answer 51 times before the month ends.
