Two Big Ten teams desperate to change the direction of their seasons meet Saturday afternoon when Purdue visits Penn State at Beaver Stadium.
Penn State enters 3-4 overall and 0-4 in Big Ten play, an almost unimaginable conference start for a program that opened the season ranked. The Nittany Lions have lost four consecutive games to Wisconsin, Northwestern, USC and Michigan after beginning the Matt Campbell era 3-0.
The latest loss was a 21-18 defeat at Michigan. Quarterback Rocco Becht completed 28 of 44 passes for 267 yards and one touchdown, while Chase Sowell produced a career-best 151 receiving yards on 11 catches. Penn State had opportunities late but a fourth-quarter fumble helped Michigan protect the victory.
Purdue enters with the same 3-4 overall record, but the Boilermakers are 2-2 in conference play.
Their last game was a 38-26 loss to Washington on October 16. Purdue forced five turnovers but allowed 488 total yards and 15 plays of at least 15 yards. Quarterback Ryan Browne completed 21 of 41 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown while also scoring on the ground.
Wide receiver Asaad Waseem was Browne’s biggest weapon, catching nine passes for 116 yards. It was his third 100-yard receiving performance of the season.
That creates an interesting matchup against a Penn State defense that has struggled to consistently complement its offense during the four-game losing streak.
Penn State’s biggest advantage could come through its passing game.
Becht has now thrown for at least 243 yards in three consecutive games, producing 243 against Northwestern, 289 against USC and 267 against Michigan. Sowell has become increasingly dangerous during that stretch, recording 68 yards against Northwestern, 95 against USC and 151 against Michigan.
Penn State desperately needs those two to continue producing.
Purdue, meanwhile, has enough offensive firepower to make laying more than a touchdown uncomfortable. Browne threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns in the season opener and has continued to show he can attack defenses vertically.
Rocco Becht — Penn State: The veteran quarterback has thrown for 200-plus yards in each of his last three games and gives Penn State its best chance to finally end the four-game slide.
Chase Sowell — Penn State: Coming off a career-high 151 receiving yards against Michigan after producing 95 against USC. He has emerged as Becht’s most dangerous target.
Carson Hansen — Penn State: The senior running back leads Penn State’s primary ground attack and scored against Michigan. He entered that game with 227 rushing yards and three touchdowns through his first six appearances.
Ryan Browne — Purdue: Threw for 273 yards against Washington and has the arm talent to challenge Penn State downfield.
Asaad Waseem — Purdue: Coming off nine catches for 116 yards and already owns three 100-yard receiving games this season.
Fame Ijeboi — Purdue: A major red-zone weapon who scored his 10th touchdown of the season against Washington.
Purdue must protect Browne and create explosive plays.
Penn State cannot be allowed to dictate the game with its front seven. If Browne gets time, Waseem and Purdue’s receivers have enough speed to challenge the Nittany Lions downfield.
The Boilermakers also need to avoid giving Penn State extra possessions.
Forcing five turnovers against Washington was impressive, but Purdue still lost because it surrendered too many explosive plays. The defense must turn takeaways into stops rather than immediately giving yards back.
Finally, Purdue needs to attack Penn State with confidence. The Nittany Lions have lost four straight and could feel additional pressure if the Boilermakers grab an early lead.
Penn State needs Becht and Sowell to pick up where they left off at Michigan.
The Nittany Lions have struggled to consistently run the football, making their passing game increasingly important. Sowell’s ability to stretch the field should create opportunities underneath for the tight ends.
Penn State must also start faster offensively. During its four-game losing streak, the Nittany Lions have averaged only 18.5 points per game.
Most importantly, Campbell’s team needs to finish.
Penn State has been within one possession in three of its four losses, including four-point and three-point defeats to Wisconsin and Michigan.
Player-prop availability varies by sportsbook. The following are recommended target lines if similar markets are offered.
Becht has thrown for 243, 289 and 267 yards over his last three games.
Penn State’s offensive identity increasingly revolves around its veteran quarterback.
Prediction: Over 249.5 passing yards.
Sowell has become the clear vertical threat in the Penn State passing game.
After 95 yards against USC and 151 at Michigan, a target around 69.5 remains attractive.
Prediction: Over 69.5 receiving yards.
Browne threw for 273 yards against Washington and could face another pass-heavy game script if Penn State takes the lead.
Purdue has shown it is comfortable putting the offense in Browne’s hands.
Prediction: Over 249.5 passing yards.
Waseem enters after a season-high nine receptions for 116 yards.
His chemistry with Browne makes him the Purdue receiver most likely to benefit if this becomes a higher-volume passing game.
Prediction: Over 64.5 receiving yards.
Penn State is favored because of home field and overall talent, but 7.5 points is difficult to lay against a Purdue team capable of generating offense.
The market has generally held Penn State around -7.5 to -8.5, while the total has moved into the 52.5-54.5 range.
Penn State should finally end its losing streak, but Purdue’s passing attack gives the Boilermakers a legitimate opportunity to stay within one possession.
Penn State 31, Purdue 27
Purdue +7.5 Over 53.5 Rocco Becht Over 249.5 Passing Yards Asaad Waseem Over 64.5 Receiving Yards
Penn State is too talented to assume the four-game losing streak will continue indefinitely, especially with two weeks to prepare and a return to Beaver Stadium.
But Purdue has enough offensive weapons to make this uncomfortable.
Expect Becht and Sowell to produce several explosive plays, while Browne and Waseem answer through the air for Purdue.
Penn State should make a few more plays at home and finally earn its first Big Ten victory of the Matt Campbell era, but Purdue keeps the game close enough to cover.
Prediction: Penn State 31, Purdue 27.
The supplied line is Penn State -7.5 with a total of 53.5. Current books range around Penn State -7.5 to -8.5 with totals roughly 52.5 to 54.5. Confirm the final spread, injuries and player-prop markets before wagering.
